lol yea because rumors are always true. Oh come on i cant believe anyone is listening to the trolls who keep trying to denegrate tor. They seem to all be gw 2 fans who think the only way gw 2 will succeed is if they succeed in getting peoplle to not play tor by there ranting and raving and rumor mongering on these forums.
im sorry but im not buyng it. The figur eby telling all those that think this game will be good and cant wait to play it that it needs 1 mil subs that all of a sudden all those players will decide to not buy or play tor .
No one wants to buy a game and have it go under the way apb did so they are using scare tactics to try to scare tor fans away. Ill have u knwo i want to play tor i dont wanna play gw 2 im sorry a dynamic ques system just is a quest system with a diffrent name. And i love healers no dedicated healer class would drive me away anyways. So even if tor fails im not playing gw 2.
also they are doing that. There is already a novel tied to tor. Coming out called fatal alliance. Im sure action figures of npcs and companions will come out. Its not star wars without the peripheral stuff . If u dont have action figures and books based on it its not really part of the universe is it?
I'm not sure if you're referring to the 300 million dollar rumor or saying this is a rumor (1 million subs). I'll just say the one million number was official. You're right though, they've already went down the path of "collectors items". As well as books, also isn't their TOR comic being published as well by dark horse? I thought I heard something along those lines.
Star Wars memorabillia sells well and always has, at least since it's come back in the 90's. They could most certainly recoupe quite a bit of their investments through that alone. Not to mention what ever subs they maintain and initial as well as continued box sales.

There is no way for MMO today to get more than 1 million subscribers.
WOW subscription numbers are exception , because WOW is not MMO its cultural phenomenon. Like Facebook. Its one time deal , after that people move on - but not to another MMO (and especially not one like WOW).
For MMO to get any larger piece of subscription pie , they need to make something completely different.
But whatever SWTOR is doing is not enough different from WOW.
I am sorry , voice acting is not enough.
Comments like this crack me up. WoW is not a cultural phenomenon. What WoW was and still is, easy on the computer and easy on the brain. Period! It has a ton of subscriptions because just about any connection and computer can run it. Couple that with just about any sized brain being able to play it and you have something that didn't exist in the mmo world before.
Has anyone else noticed that it's people criticizing this game that make claims about BioWare "pushing" the voiceover, and voiceovers being all that this game has to offer?
TBH I can't blame people for this, as it's basically all we've seen of gameplay, outside of a few battles and lightsaber physics. While sure some use it as ammunition to derail threads, it's a sound gripe to be had in a proper context.
I personally think a better approach would have been showing the game itself and holding back the story elements for last minute sales pitches and surprises at launch.

Are you serious? While I don't agree with lobotomist, I find it even harder to agree with this statement. MMO's do not take smarts to play, they take time and effort. Patience was the largest detrimental factor to early MMO's in both waiting for development as well as waiting for game-play mechanics, intelligence had nothing to do with it.
Where do you get this from, statements made by SOE/LA defending the NGE, or is it something you tell yourself to boost your ego?

Let's for discussion sake take the $150 million at face value. It's still not possible to say what the real "break even" is without knowing how much Bioware actually retains from its different revenue streams.
For example, box sales? How much goes to distribution sites (whether steam, amazon, best buy, etc). After that, how much does Bioware pay to Uncle George? It's entirely possible that Bioware retains less than half from that $59 box sale. Same goes for the monthly sub. How much goes to Uncle George? Impossible to say as we just don't know the details to the relationship. You can bet that merchandising is not going to be big for Bioware as Uncle George controls with an iron fist in this area and reaps most of the profits.
I would however stipulate that if we take the $150 million in development costs (and we even assume this includes pre-launch promo & adv) that 1 million box sales would definately not cut it as the general (non wow) retention rate has been less than 35% after one year over the past 6-7 years in MMO land. Closer to 1 million subs (ie somewhere around 3 million box sales) would probably be more realistic when looking at break even.
er... i missed it, but how long do they need to maintain 1 million subs? 3 months? 3 years? big difference there in terms of revenue so I was just wondering.

I hear these arguments all the time on these forums. People like to claim that the old school games required more intelligence and maturity to play and that the only people who could be interested in games like WoW or TOR must be 12 year-olds or people with mental deficiencies. It is as offensive as it is baseless. The only thing 'hardcore' about the old school games is that they required ridiculous patience to achieve anything. Its not like grinding in the pre-quest MMO era was difficult or mentally challenging. The only challenge involved was overcoming the intense boredom from the endless repetition involved. I would submit that advancing a character in WoW is actually MORE mentally challenging than the grindfests before it since you actually have to find and complete quest objectives rather than just grinding the same mobs until you level and move on to a new area...
Personally I'm glad games have begun moving away from the old style. It is extremely dated at this point and is NOT fun (at least to me).

Yeah, I kinda agree. Hopefully it will do well enough that EA doesn't kill it like they have many of their MMO games.
I'll give it to you real, GW2, won't be as popular as many expect it to be, it will do well over a long period of time, like GW1, but it'll be in its own class of game, mostly the people who liked GW1, Linage and a few new gamers.
SWTOR, will not do what many fans would have you think. It might have a few hiccups, once some MMO gamers learn that they really don't care about the Story BioWare is trying to push on them, and VO isn’t all that spectacular for them and they unsubscribe from the game. TOR might end up being more of a niche game than we expected, but it will have its dedicated fanbase that will stick with it through thick and thin. It might sell over 1 million boxes at launch, but I bet 6 months in the population will be around a conservative few hundred thousand, unless they match what GW2 is doing and make it B2P.
Has anyone else noticed that it's people criticizing this game that make claims about BioWare "pushing" the voiceover, and voiceovers being all that this game has to offer?
It's funny because I am actually looking forward to playing this, I have since I heard BW was making an MMO, I was the first person to post on these forums, I was posting on BW forums about how I knew this game was gonna be based on KOTOR before they said it was, and dealt with hostile BW fans because of it. I was also the source of a lot of the news in this forum in the begining, a super fan of sorts, but then I had an epiphany. I realized there have been many games in the past that I got excited about because I always tended to look at only the positives, or things I was interested in, and not the negative aspects of the game. The things that could cause the game to fail for the mass public should be pointed out, fan or not, whether you like the title or not. Just because you as an individual enjoy this aspect, does not mean the mass majority of people will. Truth is most people skip the quest dialog, so for most, story might not be what it’s cracked up to be months down the road.
This could make the game fail. Yes, TOR could very well fall flat on its face if it fails to be what people are expecting, or what the average MMO gamer wants in a game. And no amount of BW fans could save it. This game NEEDS new players to MMOs, as well as people from other games to be a massive success. The IP along, though most of you enjoy Star Wars, isn’t of massive appeal to a lot of people like it was even 10 years ago. Yes, GW2 could very well kick TOR’s ass, because it’s based on something most people can relate to, fantasy. Fantasy seems to a have a marketable appeal.
Like I said, I’ll be buying this at launch day, but I don’t expect TOR to change the world, because if I did, I might end up being disappointed. To me, TOR is just another MMO, with a side of story based on Star Wars. Nothing revolutionary about that. Mak it out however you want, not everyone is gonna get excited about it.
This is not saying much since FFXI took 5 years at well over 300k a year to break even.My simple math tells me that is about 1.5 million to break even, and i think they had more subs than that,at times reaching 500k no?
For a game during this age of a high costs ,poorer economies,1 million seems rather low.If they somehow get 500k that is a break even after 2 years. For the amount of bragging i have heard from Bioware, and being that SW is such a big brand name,1 million does seem like a rather mediocre effort.
There is some things to ponder over this number, example does this mean EA wil llayoff a ton of people once the game is launched to cut their operating costs? If so does this mea nthe game will have a rather weak team supporting it,with limited slow updates? Will they be moving their almost entire team onto another project and leave this game as is,or until they deem ready to sell us another xpac.
To me 1 million subs sounds like way too low a number for the year 2010.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

First off 1 million subs would put it behind only WoW in NA.
Second just do some basic math. Foregoing intial box sales it would take 15 months to break even with 1 million subscribers.
After that it would be grossing 120+million a year.
Way, way, too early for me to even know if i will try the game.
Like all else we hear from game dev or publishers at this early stage. All is hype. Even knowing the numbers of subs they would need to "break even" is hype. How long would they need 1 million subs to continue paying to break even? 1 month? 2?
I gave up trying to predict whether SWTOR will keep millions of subscribers. For one thing the graphics of a game make it easier for me to get into the story and gameplay of the game. So I don't really understand why millions of people play Runescape or WoW. When WoW launched in 2004 (?) the graphics were ok then but now?
Big blocky polygons turn me off. Right away! And weak story. Cannot stand weak story. Why do millions of people still play WoW and Runescape?
Are they too attached to their multiple high level epic-geared epic-achievemented epic-reputationed characters? Is it that they can't find anything better so they stick with what they have?
I want the game to succeed and I want to play it but they're dreaming if they think they're gonna get 1 million subs past the first month.
What are they riding on that they think they're game will retain more subs than any other released in the last 5 years?
At most they'll probably get 2 million box sales at release.
MMOs usually have like a 30% retention rate?
1 million subs is not going to happen but I hope they don't pull the plug because of it.
1 nillion subs of mmo players not going to happen , why cause mmo players were never bigger then 2 million .
Till WoW came , they brought there battlenet community .
So how do you get that number then ?
We are talking here starwars fans and bioware fans .
WTF are you saying , we are not important ?
Sadly we are just a drop in a bucket compared to what bioware fans are . and most of the fans already established on mmo games . so will they drop there product and run to SWOTR , truth nope , will they ad SWOTR to the product . YES
ITs different generation the MMO players , most of us can easily afford 2-3 paid subscription a month .
Comparing apples and oranges. There is no way to say if SWTOR will have a million subs or not. It will souly depend upon the quality if the game upon release and it's re-playabilty. Most MMOs have been crap and haven't had the draw from the non-mmo computer gamers (with the exception of WOW) that SWTOR has. SO trying to say that it definitively won't/can't have a million subs is simply ignorant. I'm not saying it will, but there are just to many unknown varibles at this point to make an educated guess, and trying to extrapolate its success based upon other MMO's is invalid beause it's a unique situation (at this point having more similarities with the only MMO that has maintained a million subs then the ones that haven't).
Well I guess I will state the obvious... you can guess all you want and say what you want about a game still in dev... but nobody knows.
It's like your next shit your gonna take... you know it's coming, but it's still in development and how it comes out and turns out is anybody's guess. BWAHAHA!

1. No North american MMO has had even 2 million sales at release, regardless if it's starwars or bioware, not even WoW broke 1 million release sales in NA.
2. You can't base their pc only games estimated sales on games that were console and pc. (I'm guessing that's why you think they will sell more than 2 million)
3. Not all bioware/star wars fans are into MMOs.
4. Sci-fi games aren't as popular as fantasy.
There are a lot of star wars and bioware fans but by no measure does that mean this game will be more successful than any other MMO.
It's kindof like SE and final fantasy. There are a lot of fans for both but thier newest game isn't doing the best.
The only thing they are betting on is grabbing players from WoW, which is going to be one hard sale as WoW has had 6 years to become what it is now and Bioware has to make something comparable at RELEASE or they risk sending the majority of their target audience back to their old game.
Lies! You read it all. Just can't face the facts that you can't predict your own "shit" or anything in development.
Let's just say, I'm not a hater or a lover of the game "right now", you wanna why? huh? do ya? STFU I'm going to tell you anyways.... BECAUSE IT HASN'T COME OUT YET!
Why bash anything on by what you have heard or read?
That's like having a baby and bashing the baby before he/she is even born.
So much hate. But like I said, be patient and the answer will be .. rrrrevealed. (Thumb Wars ... ha)

Your wrong, wrong and wrong.
WOW did have 1 million sales upon release (release being through the world release period Nov-Jan). People who are star wars/bioware fans mostly won't care if it's MMO or not, WOW proved this to be true. Si-fi games are atually more popular then fantasy games; fantasy MMO's have been more popular, but that could be for other factors other then the genre. I'm not saying that it will have a million subs; I'm just saying it has a lot going for it based upon it's following and without knowing more about the game itself the only reason to beleive it won't is that other games without the same type of folowing havn't had a million subs.

Isnt something new for bioware this story , sorry same thing happened with neverwinters night 1. dragon age .
That break even is never a problem for them , it seems they gamble big and it always paid off .
Honestly this time its a huge gamble , but truth is this time it isn´t even risky .
Sorry to dissapoint SWOTR haters , but its either 10 million sold or 1 million subs .
Well lets see 1 million sold means , 9 million left , well there is no part of me that says they wont sell 1 million .
Infact lets face it at the bare minimum they will sell 2 million world wide . this is the bare minimum .
Now means they only need a sub of 800k to stay for how long ?
Now thats less then 50% people who needs to stay , how much % stayed after 1 month in every MMO so called smash hit ?
Canon Aion etc .
This aint even risky sorry to burst your haters bubbles .

You are talking about Star Wars , that still has a huge fan base world wide .
You are talking about Bioware , products people buy just cause of the brand !
(godsake i still mass effect 1 and 2 not even opened original in the box )
So whats your IP and Programmers that has a own dedicated fanbase ?
LOL!
Bunch of wanna-be phsycic's in here.
Well I guess I will state the obvious... you can guess all you want and say what you want about a game still in dev... but nobody knows.
It's like your next shit your gonna take... you know it's coming, but it's still in development and how it comes out and turns out is anybody's guess. BWAHAHA!
Go back to your current MMO and be patient.
I stopped reading right there.
