A Dune MMORPG would be great but hard to execute. One of the greatest things about the Dune series is the amount of philosophical and religious content conveyed through the stories. To capture that and put it into a game would be hard at best. While if they did it right, it would be an amazing mmo, the fact is, if anyone tries, they most probably will fail at capturing the dune universe. So i dont think there should be an attempt at one. (especially since Frank Herbert is deceased).

How nice of you to have a private conversation on a public board.
We should probably consider ourselves lucky we cant hear the phone call

They made a Dune game for Sega Genesis back in the day. It was a Command and Conquer or Warcraft type of game where you had to harvest spice and that was your cash, you had to build improvements on your base and military units to defeat the NPC. It was the first game that I know of that was this style way before Command and Conquer. It was a great game and I think it would make a good MMORPG.
I still don't think that Dune as a MMORG would work that well. The only thing that would be interesting is the graphical design interpuration of the world or worlds. But I believe that the story line is lacking. I agree with others that the complexity and philosophy of the books could never be translated accurately into a game. Dune would become too generalized and would loose it's flare. The true characters of books would become insignificant, and instead of recalling their personalities and the plots surrounding them, we would be entirely focused on the character we designed in the game. And these original characters, Paul, Jessica, and all the others, are what really makes the book great. All this would be lost if Dune was made into a MMORG.

Back to Topic: Star Wars was turned into an MMO but the developers poorly executed it. The successful MMO is all about presentation. If you can portray it in a manner that does not totally conflict or contradict what it is based off of then it could turn out to be something unlike others. All I am saying is that if a developer really put a lot of effort into it the MMO Dune would be spectacular.

I am in awe of the lack of thought being displayed by posters.
Anything can or would make a good game, provided that it is developed properly.
Also, as Ive thought on this concept in some detail in the past, why must you be a member of an already existing house? What I have read of the books would seem to be a ripe ground for a mmorts. There are a billion different planets, all of which could potentially be home to a billion minor houses, ie players. From this point players could perhaps affiliate themselves with the more notable houses, or at some advanced stage join them, though that should be difficult to do. Saying that making a game on Dune would defile the series is idiotic, seeing as you could call the same words against nearly any game(Im sure Ill have to make an example later) not to mention that Dune has had a ton of random games made about it.
I could write pages devoted to my thoughts on the potential for this genre and or this particular game concept. Have thought considerably on a Homeworld MMORTS as well, and there was one rumoured to be in development a while back. Not to break from topic too much .
Geez...I read the first page and then come to the last page and the same 2 buffoons are having the same argument after several pages spanning several months. Get a room already.
