I know guild wars is a great game. But how can u rank guild wars a 9.2 under a mmorpg catogory when its not even a mmorpg. It should be lower.

Not an MMORPG? Isn't it a "RPG" (Role Playing Game)? Isn't it "MMO" (Masive Multiplayer Online)?

So then why don't you think its an MMORPG?

well if thats the case then you can count diablo 2 as an mmorpg.  reason being ist that the cities are the only place you can see everyone (basically its a graphical channel compared to diablo 2's d text base).  you can ony go in an instance with a small group (same thing as creating a game in diablo with up to 8 players in it at once).

only thing you can debate is whether diablo 2 is an rpg.

Banned from Blizzard cause I was too GOOD!!!

Actually guild wars is an MMORPG. I hate to say it but its way too grey to draw a line and say its one or the other now. Its like WoW with an emphasis on instances. Towns are more than just chatrooms, you trade items, buy/sell to vendors, get quests, etc. The bad thing is sometimes the instances get very laggy.

Actually, you are wrong. The game designers themselves said that Guild Wars is NOT a MMORPG. Even the city doesn't constitute as a MMORPG because it's instanced 30+ times. It's not an emphasis on instances, it IS instances. The entire game is just all big instances.

If Planetside is a MMORPG, this is a MMORPG. For me.

Actually, not quite. Plus, your analogy sucks. Here's why.

The game designers never said emphatically that it's "not" an mmo. What they did was invent their own new subgenre, which most objective people can clearly recognized as being at least some form of mmo, if not in the traditional/rental sense. They did this, as they have stated, to avoid the connotation of being a traditional mmo, ..they didn't want people to have wrong expectations and many things "traditional" were what they were trying to get away from. In fact, here is an exact quote from their faq

Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game).
They are merely trying to dodge the lable itself, for the reasons they describe in the two paragraphs above the quote.
It IS technically qualified as an mmo, and it's as much of an "rpg" as anything else too. Not everything has to be an everclone to meet these qualifications, regardless of whether you agree with that or not.

Now, let's tear into your little town theory. The towns have instances, and therefore, don't count? Perhaps they're nothing more than graphical chat rooms? I know you didn't mention chat rooms in your quote, but someone did, so I'll include it. Can you trade in a chat room? I'm not talking about discussing it, but actually DOING it. Can you buy and sell? Can you craft? Can you form parties? Get quests and rewards? Allocate skills/points? In fact, aren't all these the type of things you do in towns in any other game? They must all be graphical chat room too then. But what about instancing? They don't count as mmo due to that, huh? What about server shards in the rentals? Those, too, are just instances. Mulitple copies of the same thing just with different people. However, unlike GW, they are restricted. People in one can't interact with players in another. There is no such restriction in GW. If anything, the mmo point should go to GW in this respect over the hard-sharded rentals.

    They call it a

    Agreed!
The Purpose of games is that People have fund and not to be judged more ore less correctely!
Besides, who said, that MMORPGs are only allowed to be the old fashoined way???
The game is fresh and new, and has some features other mmorpgs don't have..... so I'd say it should be jugded higher than the other games!!!!

    Guild Wars rulez!

GW is a MMORPG and it deserves a 9.2 or better!  Finally a decent MMORPG comes along and people want to bash it for being unique!?
  • MalicusMalicus Member Posts: 307
Yes it must be hard to stomach though after paying per month for so long GW comes along with better grafx, concept, design and fun. And its free. Better make up some kind of nonsense so as to excuse it from being a mmorpg. Personally I think the instancing is genius and doesnt hamper the public feel to it at all. Sure in missions you arent fighting over the same mobs as other parties but as a bonus it cuts down on lag considerably. If I was a die hard pay to player I would probably be using the same weak reasons why it  isnt good. Sure its not the ultimate game to end all others but it has alot to offer most gamers that give it a chance.

Guild Wars, albeit not being very similar to other MMORPGS, still has the same elements that other MMORPGS have, in my opinion. I personally like the fact that you are almost always instanced in this game, and it is rather refreshing. Most other MMORPGS have been a drag for me. It deserves a 9.2 (I'd rate it even higher.).
