I don't buy any SE games because I don't like any of the games they make. Is this the same as boycotting? I'd never really considered it in those terms.
I don't really know either, but consider me in the same boat.
Was someone holding a gun to your head when you bought the CE? Didn’t think so. Was there no > 2 week Open Beta just prior to launch to get a very good idea of what the game was like, but still leaving time to cancel preorders? Oh wait, there was.
You may not like the game, and that is fine. Heck, when I stop having fun I'll quit too. But calling what they did criminal? That's quite an accusation there.
As far as Final Fantasy XIV is concerned, basic capitalism is all the boychotting you could want. If somebody doesn't like the game, they won't buy it or, if they have bought it, they certainly won't be subscribed to it. If enough people like it that they'll continue to stay subscribed to it, that's how it's going to shake out.
The judgment of the game will be well and truly delivered by these factors alone. For you to call that we try to botchott the game any harder than that, to represent the game as being less worth whatever it is, that is more criminal in my opinion. Lets all team up on these guys who had the audacity to release a game you didn't like? I don't think so.
Also, while you may not have liked Final Fantasy XIV, it's far, far from "the worst MMO of all time."
Having just cancelled my own acount.. I find it highly ironic that the easiest function in the entire game is the one click it takes to cancel your service plan.
Standing up takes at least two clicks. I can't even respond to a tell w/o having to open up two windows or retype the name in the chatbox.. Hilarious.
The account set up process took me nearly 20 minutes, 3 passwords, and at least 10 attempts to get a username/password combo they would accept.
But cancelling out entirely.. one click.
It's like they don't want us to play, and I find that fucking hysterical.

I don't really know either, but consider me in the same boat.
Not playing a game because you aren't interested in it's features is completely different than a boycott.
A boycott is when you actively refuse to support a product and the developers of that product in every way financially possible. Boycotts don't happen because a single product of a company is bad, it happens when certain powerful groups and organizations support a company which has changed it's business practices into those that are judged immoral and harmful to the community of consumers as a whole. In this case that would be us, the MMO genre fans.
Oftentimes a boycott is the only true method of communication between a company and the general public because of media interference, shady business practices, or politics. All these people want is your wallet. No doubt about it. A PR team can spin any situation into a rainbow and a sunny day on the horizon but they can't spin stock trends or a complete product meltdown. The developers of the game have been quoted in the media as saying things like "we don't care what the internet says." That's a mistake on their part and they have paid for it dearly. MineCraft is a huge booming success because of the internet (the opposite of boycotting) and is rumored to have many more subs than FF14 and is developed by a single individual.
Boycotting usually goes hand in hand with circulating potentially harmful information about a company and it's practices. There are many people that want this sort of information swept under the rug because it hurts their profit margin but we as MMO fans are not in the business of lining wallets we are in the business of playing good MMO games. Lined pockets of money is a direct result of producing and distributing a quality enjoyable reasonably priced product.

There is a huge problem in MMO game design right now and that is cost !.
If it took SE 5 years to brake even with FFXI ,imagine the time to break even if FFXIV was of the same content but better graphics? The timeline alone means an identical game to ffxi would cost a lot more,so SE is no question trying to attain subs before it is ready, kind of a no brainer since they went ahead and released b4 the PS3 was ready and they said it was a simultaneous release.
This is not going to be SE alone on this,EVERY developer that tries to put out a good product will be severly in the hole. The only alternative is to create a cheaper version of a game, sort of along the lines of FFXI's and Wow's cheaper graphics and cheaper game engines.Any developer that develope's their own engine is going to be further in debt and takes more time to get out the product. This is why so many decided to use other game engines and even the super rich Blizzard will not design their own game engine,it is just too time consuming and costly.A memeber of SE's staff said after the release of FFXIII the new game engine was a mistake ,so they will be learning from this, but maybe it is too late.
So what are we going to see for games now?My opinion is that we will see games that cut tons of corners, either in simplistic copy cat content that we are used to seeing or cheaper game engine or cheaper graphics and no physics.Right this moment ,there is only 3 devs big enough to pull off a great game,Square/SOE and Blizzard.SOE is hurting ,Square is lost with their new game engine,Blizzard has not shown any ability or care to step up quality,so it does not look good at all.
IMO VG was clsoe but never got the budget or the finish it needed. The good news is that about every 5 years a new idea or developer comes along with a great effort,it will be interesting to see who that is.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Couldnt agree more, I know it costs a lot to make a good and polished MMO, but if your only willing to do a half ass job dont make one to make a quick buck.
Like so many others, I refuse to buy an SE game ever , I never bought this one thanks to many threads of warning.
Lets hope soon someone makes an MMO that remembered the point of a game, to have fun.
The thing people aren't factoring in here is that SE is following the exact same plan for XIV as they did for XI. XI was released in Japan 2 years before it was opened up to the world market. There was very little content in the game originally just like XIV is experiencing now, and yes many many bugs had to be dealt with. The world wide release didn't even happen until the first expansion "Zilart" was released.
The only difference this time around is they opted not for an exclusive JP launch while they work things out and instead went for world release to start. I wouldn't say there's any reason to permanently walk away from the game or the company, it's just the way they know how to do things. Quit you're temper tantrums, cancel your subscriptions, and check back in a year or two.

Games will get better and better, just because XIV failed miserably doesn't mean GW2,TERA, or Rift or any other upcoming games will.... like always there is hope
Again there isn't only 3 big devs, they are the biggest, but there are other big ones that still have enough resources to make a good solid new gen mmorpg
IMO it will be Rift and GW2, since they both are introducing very unique but also game changing features that might or might not adapt to future new mmorpgs, we shall see
I kinda agree with the OP, but you did have time to test drive the game. I'm sad about this MMO because my LS was hard core FF SE fans. They played FF 11 since for ever. They loved FF 11, the LS had 40+ people in it that LOVED FF SE. They loved, loved, loved, loved FF 11... I mean LOVED it.. You ask em anything about anything in any FF game and they knew it.. But, since FFXIV came out they loved it for the first 48 hrs and then started to not love it so much. After about a month, only 3 outta 49 people logged in on a daily bases. Very sad day today because they said they would rather play wow then FF, heck.. I know 29 of em pre purchased crysta SAD SAD SAD SAD...
Never played FF and never intend to but as far as I remember these forums were full of warning during the beta. One simple suggestion - do not preorder and read what other people think about the game you are interested in. This way you don't have to declare boycottes. Btw SE did not do anything criminal like OP states as all the info, including open beta was available.
I've seen statemens like this all too often in this forum. Personally, I've read the warnings and took them to heart, and didn't buy FFXIV. I'm 32 years old, and have played MMO's for over a decade now. I never ever pre-order anything. Not even from Blizzard. It's just a principle I have.
What really irritates me is that the besserwissers here at the forum blame the consumers for buying an unfinished product "because all the information you needed to under stand what pile of crap this really is, was readily available to you during beta". If this is true, why the H**** did SE release their product when this info was "so readily available"??! Are they blind?
Blaming the consumers for being stupid is secondary to the logical conclusion that SE knew fully well what kind of product they were releasing. Yet they did it anyway. That's beyond stupid.
so everyone knew it was shitty well before the consumer bought it, and when he did it still wasn't his fault? lol. If a guy is selling snake oil and someone buys it, who is the bigger idiot? Tricking a consumer into buying something shitty is one thing, but when they buy the shitty product even with information freely available that is completely different.
I do love all the exaggerations though. It's quite amusing. "unplayable" yeah except that is playable and being done so by at the very least thousands of people. So a sweeping statement of 'unplayable' is wrong. 5-10 second lag? Nope, not once. Stop trying to play the game on your WoW rig and take 20 seconds to read the recommended specs, and realize minimum requirements has the word 'minimum' in it and isn't 'minimum requirements but will still run great'

So, if a tourist wanders through rome, and he can ask the police if there is the danger of thieves, and he is robbed by some ugly guy, the tourist is the one to blame??

No. But that's not even remotely the same. First of all a thief takes stuff against your will, people who bought the game were consenting. Would be more like if people offered to tell you about a store that rips everyone off and you refused, then got pissed because you went to the store that rips everyone off. People would just look at you like "why didn't you just let them tell you about the store?" Same horse shit that happens in those stupid news stories. Some person sues mcdonalds over coffee being too hot even though coffee is known for being hot and there is a big fucking 'HOT' warning on the coffee.
Not everything is supposed to be satisfactory regardless of how stupid or ignorant you are. It'd be nice, but it's no where near a reasonable expectation.
If anyone is thinking of playing this game, look at the title of this thread.
-Us gamers have been having it stuck to us over the past years having to pay to beta test these companies games.
The amount of garbage that game companies now release onto the market now is tragic.
But this release is criminal. They honestly owe people their money's back. Heaven knows if they will maintain a solid fan base after this. I was a hardcore SE fan, but this I can't ignore. I would rather a homeless guy have mugged me for $85 because at least I know that a starving guy would have some money to get food or whatnot with.
But this is just criminal. This is the worst MMO of all time and I think its time that we gamers help SE to a little accountability.
I have been boycotting all other SE games since I bought the CE of FFXIV.
I would urge everyone to do the same. Some people in this world have to work for their money and stealing is not right.
If I sold someone rotten food, I would give them their money back because they did not get to have the intended use of it.
The same should be applied to this game. Its simply an un-playable heap of garbage.
Boycott SE until they issue refunds, which means forever, because you all know that keeping their fans happy has no priority within their company.
While I can understand being upset...really now! Most of this is your opinion only, and that opinion will not be shared by (many) others
The real kicker here is your statement
-Us gamers have been having it stuck to us over the past years having to pay to beta test these companies games.
These companies have ALL offered open betas of their products (we won't get into the ' right to try before you buy argument, suffice it to say, the betas are offered') if you tried it, and still bought it, then you have no one to blame but yourself. If you didn't try it, but still bought it, you have no one to blame but yourself. The information is all out there. Use it.

And where was the warning sign on the FF14 package? It was advertised as the best MMORPG ever, and the poor consumer got a pile of shit, that may or a may not become a game in the next years. Most consumer do not read forums, by the way.

I disagree, The homeless man would have bought booze!
I agree, Many of todays mmo's are getting rushed out the door before they even get meat on there bone's, Quite a few infact have had this fate only to be shut down before they had a chance to shine, like APB, AutoAssult, and maybe FF.

I think most everyone can agree SE should have listened more to their fanbase in the early beta stages. It has come back to bite them, as the game does need improvements in several areas. Still, at the end of the day, it’s their game and they can (and did) release it as they saw fit. So it wasn’t their best decision ever, yeah totally, but they had every right to and didn’t break any laws.
I can't sympathize too much with the OP though since there was plenty of opportunity to try it out before committing to the purchase. If the OP is THAT against it, they would have discovered this in Open Beta.
Some people will privately boycott SE over this and they’re entitled to. Urging others to boycott them on this forum is probably not the best idea though. Besides, some of us do actually enjoy playing despite the flaws. At least until another game lures us away.... dun dun dun.

i hear you
Most consumer do not read forums, by the way.

pie.
