Star Trek Online: Ask Cryptic Deals with Champions F2P

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In the November 1st edition of Ask Cryptic, Star Trek Online executive producer Dan Stahl discusses the impact of Cryptic stable-mate, Champions Online, going free to play and what it means to Star Trek Online. Among other things, Stahl also talks about PvP and whether or not a new faction is coming.

Q: sithterror: ...Romulans.

A: We are in fact discussing Romulans and how to get more of their story and faction into the game. We have always talked about the next faction we add to the game being Romulan. This would involve them having their own ships and storyline content. It is a big endeavor and as we've learned with the KDF, not something we could do in the span of a single update. So our long term plans are working on ways to start tackling this over multiple updates but I've no specific dates to give on when you'll see a Romulan playable faction.

There's a LOT more to read so head here to check it out.

I don't know, maybe it's just me. But I have yet to be impressed by anything Cryptic has put out.

I have some news for you: STO is still not good.

It has all the problems it did before, only now, fewer players in the game and more stuff in the cash shop.

    No thanks.

    Not interested.

It's pretty clear where the loyalty of Cryptic lies and it certainly isn't with their player base and that's why it's getting smaller.

This game is awful. It takes a true Star Trek fan or someone with a very very open mind to really enjoy this game.

Cryptic is the only company that has lost my support by consistantly making subpar games.

Thank goodness NCsoft took over City of Heroes/Villians.

Well 6 months after launch i went back, as I said it would.  It took me 3 weeks or less to level.  I run all the quests. I did all the special missions, and the breen missions as well.  I did all the fleet actions.   The only one that I did not complete was the crystalline entity,

I have to say it is a pos game, it is truly so not star trek like it is not funny.  Sure they have Spock doing voice over.  Yes they had a few missions that tied into the original star trek. I got to go through the guardian of forever as well as fighting the doomsday machine that Decker supposedly blew up.   I have killed Borg, Romulan's, and Klingon's by the thousands.

The only thing left after 3 weeks was to run pvp to get marks for better gear, or to run daily missions to get marks to get better gear. At that point its just rince and repeat, and gets borring.

Did you notice that none of the questions asked why,  they all seam to be planted to bring out what cryptic wanted us to know.  There were no real questions that I did see.  Oh and hey what are you adding to the store I saw that asked.

So I can just advise stay far far away.

That Q & A really left me with the impression that it was half hearted. More watered down that I like I guess.

This time next year, STO will be F2P as well.  Cryptic is so bad making MMO's that their third title has been changed and will not be billed as an MMO as they previously planned.  At least Cryptic is finally understanding that they have no chance in the MMO market with their crappy instanced-based engine and excessive micro transaction plus subscription model.  I will never purchase a new game from Cryptic until it has been released and reviewed.  It is just too risky to trust them to build a game with enough content after the failures of CO and STO.

I cant believe they are talking about Romulans when the Klingon race is STILL in such bad shape.  In the 9 months it has been out the klingons got like 8 missions.  They should spend the next YEAR just working on Klingon content before even THINKING about a new race.  Cryptic talking about a new race just shows how desperate they are for more subs.  Screw the existing guys (Klingons) and lets develope for potential new customers (Romulans).  I didnt realize so many high level managers from SOE had gone to work at Cryptic...

"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game."  - SEANMCAD

Once these guys see the ridiculous amount of money Champions Online makes from going F2P I can definitely see STO doing the same.

People are idiots. At least Turbine's games were good and worth spending some money on.

Yes I have been playing it since launch and it is still not good.  Sure they added some content but they also added way more C-store stuff but the bottom line for me is wqhen my 5 year old can make Vice Admiral on his own only playing a couple hours during the week and a few more during the week-end something is wrong.

    Can't agree more....

Time to write this game off for good, I think, and hope someone better gets the IP.

I won't bother revisiting this until they've implemented a proper exploration system and fixed the scaling of the interiors so everything isn't gigantic.

I'm being a bit liberal in my opinion right now but I've tended to think of Cryptic as "the little developer that could" they can make games that can be played endlessly, with graphics that can be compared to the mmo space industry leaders, and I'll even give them they tend to add more custumization than the best out there, but they are not a AAA developer, and they cannot release the games they make with the same models that are traditionally used by mmorpg's.

The moves they make with STO seem to be more lateral while they need vertical growth as well, not just more of what they have in the game but new and different ideas added on to what they have.

If I wasn't expected to subscribe and pay monthly for STO the truth is I can handle the purchase price but that game nor anything else Cryptic has ever made is worth paying monthly for, if they can't add some talent that has a nose for what makes games like WOW,LOTRO,EQ worth the sub fee then they need to adjust.   I'm taking a guess here but a companies reputation can only take so much of of the abuse they'ce subjected themselves to before it becomes too much to recover from.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

well im going to continue too wait for them too show me something intresting but as it stands it is boring too play i dont recormmend buying it

i came back after about 8 months  i was bored shitless  even doing the quests were boring there is no point grinding for stuff  because there is nothing to do after it and they all practically abandoned ship after  the fail launch

the customization is huge but  only at start  once you get into battle start lvling it is easy getting to max lvl is easy too

there is absolutely no challenge in this game   it is easy mode for anyone who doesn't play like 2 hours a week

KDF has barely anything at all in STO, it's like playing Federation means that you just "deserve" to have more stuff available. Yet they're now talking about adding a new faction, while Klingons have recieved maybe 10% of Fed Content, which one might assume would be 100% by now. Nah, Cryptic does some crappy "weekly episodes" that don't even come out weekly, but have huge breaks between them.

KDF is still pure shit and they know it, KDF players know it, Federation players know it.

Yet here we already have talk about Romulans, which they swore not to do anything about until KDF was actually up to date.

Trusting cryptic is like trusting funcom, it's more likely you win lottery and get struck by lightning the same day.

I'd place Funcom light years ahead of Cryptic in every possible way. Take that however you wish.

Bought the game on release (Bad move) levelled Klingon in pvp to max level, took 3 weeks and was really boring, got a fed to LC2 and then my free month expired, I did not re-sub.

I went back 3 weeks ago to see if it had improved and yes it has, it is about 1% better than it was 6 months ago :D  I will be leaving after my month expires, it's a very poor game, a huge grind if you want gear and the missions are mostly the same.  Kill ships, beam down, click 5 flashy things, kill 5 groups of enemy, beam out.

STO is all about the C-Store, everything that you would normally expect for your subscription is in the C-Store where you have to pay even more money to get them.  The irony is that if they emptied the C-Store and just put it all in the game they would get more subscribers, they have the worst marketing advisors ever.

The potential of this game is so large, yet Cryptic keep missing it. You have a player base that desperately want this game to be more then it is, and a company that continues to ignore that player base. I have played almost every Star Trek game for pc. I have enjoyed every one of those games more then the MMO that Cryptic produced. They took a great idea and put a half-hearted effort into it. I doubt I will ever spend a dime on a cryptic game again.

I still don't understand why MMORPG keeps coming back to revisit this game. If you walk by a pile of dogshit  then walk by it 3 weeks later, it's still dogshit, just a different color.

harvest151  This is the only mmorpg fan site I visit regularly but I think there is something to what you say here, I mean is someone on the mmorpg staff married to a Cryptic employee they refuse to stop beating this dead horse with re-reviews (which makes no sense the game is no different now than at release), and contests galore and I've heard word of heavy handed warnings and bannings for "trolling" this game as well.

I guess I understand they pay the bills but I would think there has to be a company out there willing to help with that without asking that mmorpg trades it's integrity in the process.

Well I remember in beta, this site did 3 pieces that really tore cryptic a new rear end. There were not nice articles and they turned into a huge dog pile. Then all this sudden this site did a 180 and ever since then they been buddy buddy.  Not sure what happened but It was clear the attitude towards cryptic changed total from what the first 3 articles were.   You have to ask yourself why.

I still don't understand the props they are giving to cryptic, however any time we get a sto article cryptic get kicked right in the soft spot, and deserves it.
