Will there ever be a WoW killer?

ZierrityZierrity Member UncommonPosts: 242

so this is basicly my taughts on the called wow killer.

Lately I've read a bunch of threads about the famous wow killer title and wihich game it's gonna be, so I thought a lot about it and here is what I think.

next year will be a good year for the mmo player community, we'll (most likely) gonna get our hands on games we've been waiting for a long time, Guildwars2, SWTOR, TERA, RIFT, Blade&Soul, etc...

but will one of these games be the wow killer? thats the million dollar question, isnt it?:P

I, for one, say no, neither of these games will be the one who kills WoW, they seem to be VERY good games, they really do, but I really do not think that one of them will be titled the WoW killer.

BUT, here is what I think might kill wow (eventually). If you think of World of warcraft like a dot in the middle of a paper, then we draw a big circle around the dot, which represents the community (subscribers). Then we add 5 dots around the circle which represents the games listed above. these games will also, most likely, get a big community, and the circles around these games will then overlap the circle around WoW... damn, I suck at axplaining this:P

here I made an illustration to show you what I mean;

(the circles around the different logoes is random size btw, I dont know anything about how big each game's community is going to be)

but anyways, as you see the circles around each logo overlaps the circle around the WoW logo, in other words, the community or subscriber base of each game is going to "snatch" more or less people from the wow community, and I think thats how the end of WoW is going to start, newer game's community feed out of wow's community and eventually all these mmo'scommunity will grow, and by this, the subscriber base of WoW will slowly get smaller.

But will this alone be able to kill WoW? I dont think so... As many have said before me,WoW will eventually kill itself. I think this might be the beginning, but in the end, Blizzard themself will get the "killing blow", maybe they'll panic and release a so called "miracle" patch in hope to get the players back, that will change WoW so much that it's no longer the game people love now, and the remaining subscribers will slowly drain away to try something new. But as I said, I dont know, this is just a speculation... but this is what I think will kill WoW.

And thank you if you actually read through all this, I appologies for all the typo's, Im a Norwegian who had a bit too little english in highschool:P but I just wanted to share my thoughts about this :)

feel free to comment or tell me what you think might kill WoW or why WoW will never die :)

thanks for your time.

Eventually WoW will die, if it's by these games? Probably not.

yes and it will be called blizzard. they will destroy their own game by all the crap they put in it to make it more dumbed down.

I am sure plenty of new MMO's will chip away at the block bit by bit but Blizzard have a way of making them come back...  WoW will be big for a long time and I doubt there will be anything that quite catches the same amount of subs.

Short of it is, WoW came at just the right time boasting just the right game to feed the masses. Nothing else will quite compare, cos nothing else will be exactly like WoW.

Yes, I'd like to believe so.

However, I don't think it will be an MMO… or at least an MMO as we know it.

And in my opinion, that will be a good thing.

    No

    stop asking

This and the sextubilliongillion threads before it about "Wow killers", as well as the professionally written articles from sites like this and massively, have all asked the same question for like 4 years now. Its not getting old, its been old.

No, there will not be a wow killer in the short term.

I believe a wow killer could come from consoles and will be developed by blizzard.

Attrition is wows only real enemy, the same with all mmorpgs so there is a possibility no one game will kill wow.  Time can kill it.

Well, yea eventualy... just think of it this way:

A person can only take the same amount of the same for so long, its like eating a cheese sandwich everyday... it gets dull and boring after a while, eventhough its great.

Also I've got my reasons to believe that WoW is a major placeholder for a lot of people till they find something better. For me anyways, its just waiting till that better game come along. Will it be blizzard again, Guild Wars 2, ArcheAge or whatever... all good :)

I've also noticed that for me it's hard to jump from one MMO to another, simply due to the fact I'll feel some of it is the same all over again, so I stopped playing MMO's till that better game is finally releases so I can get started with a fresh feeling.

This is my take on things :)

My personal opinion is that most of the people playing WoW aren't looking for a new home, they are perfectly happy where they are. Thus, there will never be a WoW killer.

Also, WoW is an anomoly that exists within the sphere of MMOs. It is highly unlikely that any MMO in the future will attain the status that WoW has. People treat WoW as if 12 million subscribers is the norm that can be attained when in fact this is hardly the case.

WoW subscribers will eventually dwindle and the game will shut down, but those who leave won't necessarily go to another MMO. And the ones who do, won't likely all go to the same place.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Oh please.  Like WoW was ever complex.  It has always been an enjoyable game, but it was never this complicated game that some people try to make it out to be.  I remember when it launched many of us that were playing other games were calling it simple, kiddie, and other things.  It was and still is fun to play however.  Blizzard made a simple easy to get into MMO with WoW that was relatively polished.  They reaped the benifits of that, and have to continued to grow by keeping the same formula.  Simple easy to get into gameplay that the masses will enjoy.

As to the original topic I get tired of hearing about the WoW killer.  How many bad games have been released trying to be the WoW killer?  I would rather a game pick a target audience, and build a game staying true to that audience.  This is what CCP has done with EVE, and it has worked for them.  No one will ever make a WoW clone that topples WoW.  If a game tries to copy WoW then their game comes off as being a cheap imitation, and they are targeting customers that already have the game that they enjoy playing.  People who want to play WoW are already playing WoW, and aren't going to leave it for a game that is a poor replica of what they are already playing.

People talking about MMO 'killers' clearly have no idea how deep customer loyalty and simple ignorance can go.

Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.

Omg realy? Other thread about this? Look WoW is  MMO and it has its fans and those fans are mostly new in MMO and they like WoW because its singe player game with multiplayer stuff.. Other WoW-like games failed (cause there is WoW-like game.. WoW :D) and some others non-WoW MMOs have theirs own fans, but nothing is gona "kill" WoW it will just ends one day thats all.. There is a lot of better games than WoW but mostly for hardcore players or for some specific audience and they are doing great.

WoW is typical Blizz made game, for masses and for money. Most "true" MMO players have tried and played more than one or two MMOs and they are looking for something more complex than WoW. So get used to it WoW has most fans even if its not best MMO by MMO standarts. WoW haters will always think what is gona kill WoW and WoW fans will be always saying that WoW is best, why? cause it has so many fans.. OMG STUPID SHIT RIGHT HERE! :D

Blizzard's next MMO will kill WoW, but only after they have made it worth it for each and every current WoW subscriber to move to the new title.

  • Will there ever be a wow killer?

Is there a need for one??

Keep an eye on Diablo 3.  A lot of WoW players came from D2, including myself, and I won't really have a reason to go back to WoW when D3 comes out.

    Lets break this down.

Guildwars2 - This is Free 2 Play MMO, that we know little about. We dont even know if the world PvP is any good. So far the hype on this game is going down the drain. This game seems like it will be a filler game to the rest of us like Guild Wars 1 was.

SWTOR - This game seems like its a pile of hyped crap. Bioware likes doing the story>Gameplay concept, but that doesnt work in this genre of gaming. sorry bioware. as long as gameplay remains second nature to story telling, this game will remain a crap fest.

TERA - this game seems like a gimmick. It has Aiming. Which is a very very small percentage of the MMORPG game market. The combat looks like a dull fest. Likely the world will be instanced or something.

RIFT- problem with rift,,, um,, not sure right now. but I think of something.

Blade&Soul - isnt this that kung fu game by NCsoft or something?

Probably only if we're talking about Blizzard's next MMORPG.

I expect my grandchildren to someday show me their level 185 Warlock and all his or her leet gear.  Probably have a 15K gearscore as well.

    No.

WoW will still be there old and moldy as sparkly next-gen mmos make it look like something for the sega genesis.

It will always be pay to play because Blizzard is stubborn. But of course I thought SOE was stubborn and then EQ2 went f2p. I expected DAoC or something else by Mythic.

It will continue to get paid expansions because Blizzard likes money. Don't expect Cataclysm to be the last.

     OP:

    A question:

Where did you draw the circles of the following published Wow killers:

    - EQ2, Vanguard, D&DO, Lord of the Rings, Tabula Rasa, Hellgate London, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Aion, Darkfall, Runes of Magic , Star Trek On line and ... Final Fantasy 14 ?

The last one (FF14) was on that list of "the future killers" ... until it was published. You smartly removed it from the current picture now I see...

    See the picture ?

Quite simple: What do these games offer(ed) over playing WOW?

Answer: the circles never touched WOW subscriptions, only pre launch and the first 2 months of each new launch.

Then these circles drift further into oblivion.

I don't see much in the new circles you invented, except for the fact GW2 will replace GW1.
