Man if there were as many people concerned with killing world hunger or the recession in the US; as there are worrying about how others enjoy spending their free time in World of Warcraft: We'd live in a much better society.

Don't fucking worry about killing WoW. It's bigger than you and your ideals. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can sleep at night.

According to the Necromonicon the only way to kill this beast is to stab it in the heart with a silver dagger dipped in dead man's blood.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

why do people want to see the game get killed?  Just let it run its course, eventually people will get bored of it and look for something else.

If everyone stopped playing WoW tomorrow, would anything improve? Would gaming suddenly get better? Would it change anything at all? The answer is No.

WoW was the right game, for the right time, in the right place. There is no 'killing' it, only beating it.... and that has already happened. Farmville was the WoW killer. It took gaming to the next level (50M from 11M). It brought in a whole new crowd to gaming, and showed that gaming had evolved. This is the exact same thing that WoW did, years before.

So, the question is, if WoW has already been topped (and heartily). Who is going to top FarmVille?

You pretty much posted what I was going to say, so yeah +1.

I think one of the biggest reasons we want WoW killed is because we would like that playerbase supporting other games.  If there were 12 million players actively looking for another game, we would see alot more developement of a bigger variety of AAA games.

There is no game that will kill wow, and there will never be a game that will kill wow.

This kind of threads are pointless. There is no sush a thing as a wow killer.

Your contribution to the thread is far more pointless than the thread can ever be.

This is VERY simple math, for a new game to garner 10+ million subs, there would have to be at least 15-20 million gamers actually seeking, and we should all realize this will NEVER happen again ,the way it did happen for Wow ,back when DSL became a reality in every household.

There is no reason to worry about Wow at all, play the better games out there, total numbers do not matter one bit ,since it is all about YOUR server anyhow.

Actually you can play an identical game to Wow in runes of Magic,it is free to play and the dungeons offer extreme challenges.ROM actually does a weak job of creating the sub class system[ffxi]but hey it is still one step better than Wow.I actually played Rom for about 6 months,i had way more fun than Wow could ever accomplish and i am not saying Rom is a great game by any stretch,i am just saying there is better for free at doing the exact same thing.

Wow=ease of leveling, quest driven /linear design all leading towards end game raiding.$15 bucks wasted money, wasted time.

Rom=the EXACT same thing as Wow,but with the added runes part for making gear better there is actually a bit more work to do before you can take on the elite dungeons in the game.$0 cost nothing, less wasted time.

I realize this is off-topic, but I have to disagree.

I've played both games, also.  The only similarities between the two, in my opinion, are that they are both MMORPGs, and they both use a fantasy setting.  I suppose, if you were to ignore absolutely everything else, that it could be argued that they were virtually the same game.  But that would be disingenuous.

Insofar as which is the better of the two, that would be entirely subjective.  I prefer WoW over RoM.  However, I certainly wouldn't attempt to discourage anyone from trying either game and making up their own mind.  I strongly encourage everyone to try out as many games as they need to in order to find the one that suits them and their gaming needs.

I just try to be respectful of other people's choices.  Just because somebody likes a game that I, personally, dislike, does not mean that they are "teh ev1l".  It just means that they have different tastes than I do.  If I wasn't able to accept that different people from different backgrounds will make choices that I disagree with, and was unable to exhibit enough restraint to allow them to be happy doing what they like to do without trying to make them feel like a total noob, then it would be time for me to move on to another hobby.

Like lots of people have said allready, -time- will decrease its popularity (majorly). A game that popular won't be killed, but the majority is bound to play something else in the future or not play at all. Its just how it works.

So drop the wierd questions, just look at other older and succesfull mmo's and make your conclusion.

My prediction is that WoW will continue to evolve (or "devolve", in some sceptics eyes) for quite some time; whether it is five years or 20, it is hard to tell. With continuing financial support from huge subscriber numbers, the game can incorporate any new strategies/approaches that any other MMO launches and hence successfully compete or "kill" it. Moreover, the game has an unparralleled number of things to do: huge map to explore, lots of classes/races, lots of professions, lots of PvP, runs on any rig, etc. It is difficult to imagine that any other MMO will ever develop so much content - as no other MMO will ever have a financial might to do so or keep up with WoW content additions/tweaks. Unless, a very flexible, sandbox MMO can make user-content as polished as dev content and seemlessly integrable into the existing content, there will be no WoW killer.

What may "kill" or at least negatively impact WoW in the end, is the shift from PC-based gaming to mobile; but I am sure by then WoW will have evolved/transitioned to something than can run on such devices as well.

What will it take to kill WoW? That's simple enough, WoWv2, which Blizzard is making. Period. End of Story.

They made a lot of unilateral changes to the game in prep for Cataclysm and it has messed up many things.  They have so many complaints about this that good customer service has gone down the tubes.  This could kill them.

Every time they make a change to the game people say it ruined it for them. Ive read the changes and read into cataclysm and decided to come back after skipping WotLK. And im kinda glad i did. Since from what i understand they made grouping in dungeons alot easier in WotLK, and what alot of people are complaining about is going back to pre Lich King agro management. And the fact they they streamlined the talents is another complaint. Neither of these things bother me. Or alot of other people i used to play with that are coming back for Cata.

But some people dont like it. To each their own.

As a matter of fact, I would worry a lot, because the next MMO from Blizzard will use the backbone stucture of clustered server play as a default starting point.

"Your" server based games will be at a huge disadvantage against the present structure Blizzard already uses. The very new NA region super cluster is forming a player base of 2-2.5 million players - on line - and putting on top of that it will include:

around 30 to 40 different Battlegrounds (per 10 level cap), a rated Battleground system, a wargame (battleground) system, a casual Battleground system,  6 Arena's, some 80 dungeons group finder (probably a raid finder in the future) etc ...

And ... that's only for Wow, which has to work with an old single realm based structure (and try to implement this kind of content with your 10K full server based game...). Impossible.

Imagine what such a backbone system will do for a new MMO where the multi server cluster is used from scratch. No longer a single server based realm, that's a sure thing already.

So I should be more than worried.

I don't want WoW to die. I want it so it can keep those new age and immature gamers over there. The rest of the mmo world needs to start making niche gaming again.

Okay. I've recently had a second thought that I wanted to get an answer to. Today, it has been announced that APB has gotten a buyer and will be up and running - they hope - by the end of 2010.

So it brought up another question - actually, a couple of questions - that I would like to pose.

First. If Blizzard goes bankrupt or closes down for whatever reason or another, and the World of Warcraft game is bought by another company, which I would bet my life that it would be, would you continue to play? Or if you have never played it or used to play it, would you consider starting again because of a new developer?

Now, APB, according to the preliminary report, is going to a free-to-play model, which makes me want to pose another question.

If World of Warcraft went to a free-to-play model, would it make the game better or worse for you, and why?

WoW died with the first expansion already...what will it take to kill WoW ...? Maybe a different attitude of the players and especially a less money avidity of the companies in this genre, that destroys a lot of ideas and art.

Hard time fitting in? Those mean people can't hurt you now.

To bad you can find the same thing in every game, niche or not.

What will it take to kill WoW?

    This is a stupid question!!!!!

    WoW is not alive.

The only thing that will bring down WoW is Blizzard.

When they "BLIZZARD" deside that is is time to turn off the servers that will be when WoW ends.

  • HydhraHydhra Member Posts: 32
