Originally posted by brihtwulfI would just like to suggest to the fans out there of WoW, that you try Guild Wars. It has alot of similar features to WoW, like fast-paced combat and limited downtime. But it's also unique in its own right and has alot of fun quests and PvP. (Plus, the graphics are better. Just wanted to beat that dead horse a little.) There isn't a subscription fee, so it's worth the run. You'll be glad you did.
GW isnt any good. it offers nothing new, and the only thing to do is pvp. if i wanted to play a rpg, i would play a rpg. if i wanted to play a mmorpg, i would play a mmorpg. i dont need anything inbetween atm.
Neither does WoW, and why do you play WoW? To PVE? I doubt it. I don't play GW nor do I plan to (though I have played it in beta) and I really see no reason to want to keep WoW when GW is out. And from the trends recently, most at least, most sane people feel the same.
WoW at least gave me my money's worth for the time i enjoyed it. but guild wars has got to be my worse game purchase ever!!! i got so frustrated and bored of it after level 4. the invisible walls are just stupid and the mob AI is really bad too. have your pet stand in front of a mob and if the mob wants to attack you, it'll never reach you cause your pet was in the way. apparently its not smart enough to walk around the pet. not sure if this always happens but that's what i noticed when i was killing mobs.

WOW is not as simple as GW.
Ugh...My reply intentioned WoW is an attraction to FPS players who want a simplistic version of a MMORPG...Never said WoW was as simple as GW mind you, meight.
NEVER, I'LL NEVER LEAVE WOW! WOW IS GOOD WOW IS GREAT WE SURRENDER OUR WILL AS OF TO THIS DATE. HOW COULD SOME GAME FROM SOME COMPANY I NEVER HEARD OF (NOT NCSOFT BUT ARENANET ) MAKE A BETTER GAME THEN WOW? O RIGHT, THE MAKER OF GW IS AN EX-BLIZZARD LEAD.
wow and guild war do have similar features. they all centered on questing to level your stats. both games offer nothing new but the same old mmorpg featues we see. both games will not last long with these old features. innovation will last. we'll have to see if dark and light, darkfall, and age of conan will do.

So how is the pvp system in guild wars the same old features? How is the no subscription fees the same old features? How is being able to instance all area for your group to keep camping and lag down the same old feature? I know that games have instance dungeons and such but this is the first to do it this way. Also I dont know of another game that uses streaming tech for updates and patches on the fly.
I personally wouldnt say it is the same mmo with the same features that everyone else has done. There are several things done differently in this game. I am not saying they are all good but they are different.
Originally posted by Marku Why isnt GW a mmorpg? why is it all over this site called mmorpg.com then :-Pits "massive" "Multiplayer" "online" "roleplaying game" = MMORPG get it? now stop your whining, nobody's forcing you to like Guildwars :-P
Actually, Guild Wars is not a mmorpg in the true sense of the word. It isn't a persistant world just as Diablo and NwN servers are not persistant worlds. However, it does meet all the other qualifications.
Also, someone said they dont believe there will be no monthly fees.
So far, there wont be.

I'm a WoW player (as many will know around here) and like the game quite much as it fit quite perfectly MY mold for MMorpgs.
I gave Guild Wars a try just for the fun of it (that no montly fee subscription is quite alluring). What i got out of it is that Guild wars has something more than Wow in certain areas and something less in others, in the end i still prefer WoW, but i have played GW only for a few days so it is not fair to give a direct comparison. Here is what i found out.
The graphics are incredible. they are as artistic as WoW ones, but with different style. It seems like to be moving in an oil painting, especially the newbie areas, but all across, graphics would get 10/10. Really breathtaking. It also runs like a charm on my medium level system without too much problems from the get go. so good job Arenanet!
Sound is also quite nice, no speech of any kind though.
Guild Wars is completely instanced. what this means is that there are some hot spots, ususally cities or other neutral places with merchants where you can meet other players, but all around there are instanced areas where only you and your group can adventure. People loves it, people hates it. To me, so far, it seems quite a nice system. it permits to do things that are much more realistic than in other mmorpg.
Example: in WoW (or EQ2 or whatever) if something is bound to happen, it will happen all the time. The Defias messenger always spawn and always run the same road to be killed over and over by adventurers. The same 2 guys have the same conversation all the time. There are special scenes every now and then, but the rest of the world is static.
In GW, thanks to the instance, things happens once and only once. Take a certain quest? when you enter the appropriate instance, there is the Prince and 2 guards waiting for you outside the gate, you go with him and defeat the invaders. he will never be there again, but for another quest he could appear and confront his xenofobhic father about killing an ambassador.... and so on. It grants a certain sense of realism to it, even if, of course, is not perfect. (if you later come to the same area with somebody else that has same quest, you will see the same scene obviously).
I think Guild Wars do not take complete advantage of this features, though, or maybe it does... but not in the first 10 or so levels.. ehehehe. I remember Mythica concept of evolving instance areas... and that was really cool.
How is the gameplay? Well, it is pretty hectic for one. Things happens quite fast. there are levels, yes, but the only thing you get with levels is 20 Hit points and a bunch of attribute points that should make your skills better.... and they do. but not much eh. (like rising your fire magic from 2 to 3 and now your Fire Rain spell does instead of 6 damage, 7. yuppie).
What i got the impression of, is that the Devs wanted to remove many of the Rpg aspect from a MMorpg game and make it more similar to a more action oriented thing. You can choose to bring with you only 8 skills out of all you have, the interface is very lacking in information and there ain't such a thing as "strength, Agility, Dexterity etc" only attributes you get are the ones that affect your skills and they depend on your class. you can have only 4 pieces of equipment and everything is made to make the game seems more a Counterstrike session than else.
I think the hybrid is a succesful one and Deathmatch play can be quite fun (they have all the varieties, capture the flag, king of the hill, deathmatch and so on). They have also some serious world tournaments going on.. but i know little of that.
That is all, overall WoW feels more an Rpg than Guild Wars. But both are technically quite well made.
Have a nice day

Wow Volkmar that was a really nice post and a lot more well thought out than most of the posts in this thread. It doesn't sound like Guild Wars would really be fun for me from what you said.
If you are into being cooks, having mounts, fishing, travelling etc... you won´t find that in Guild Wars.
The game is all about skill and strategy, with fast paced action and great gameplay. Honestly, I played both GW and Wow, and even though you don´t get the feeling of ¨having a life¨ within the game like in Wow, it allows you to have a lot of fun while ¨having a life¨ outside the game (no psycho grinding, no camping, no PKillers, fair PVP, challenging PVE, no stomping on someone who is 30 lvls bellow you...).
Perhaps once you get to lvl 60 in WOW (the boring phase), you may consider yourselves giving GW a try.

Well, one reason why WoW does well is because of doing the old stuff well. Nothing wrong with GW as such, but it doesn't.
Innovation? EVE has had the most innovations of all recent MMO(RP)Gs combined, does it sell well? Looking at the concept and feature lists and general info of D&L I've been so far extremely disappointed how uninspiring the game seems so far.

Think D2, but better.
I would believe most WoW players have played D2, or something similar that got them hooked to WoW.
Greetings.

Just bought Guildwars and I hate it. It's not a MMORPG. It's a diablo wannabe.
