My first 90 minutes with the combat upgrade... (tragic and funny)

DrSawDrSaw Member Posts: 81

Well, today was my first day with the combat upgrade! I'm a 31-year old, former software developer myself, so I was giving SOE the benefit-of-the-doubt and was hoping the new system would be an improvement. I'm a level 39 pikeman, master artisian, and I have pretty good rifle skills. Basically, I was a well-balanced character before, but certainly not GOD-LIKE or a JEDI.

Here's a synopsis of my ACTION PACKED, FUN (games are supposed to be fun) day with SWG:

- Arrived in Dantooine, naked.... I'm cool with that. No problem. I refitted my armor, so now I'm wearing padded armor. I might look like a papal bodyguard, but that's okay.

- I needed some new armor leggings, so I went to craft them... CAN'T CRAFT ARMOR ANY MORE. Okay, it's an upgrade... things are gonna change. That's okay.

- So I headed to an armor store... Upon leaving the city I was one-shot killed by an NPC. I flew off my swoop and just died in a bloody heap. I figured this must have been a fluke.

- Awoke in the cloning station... now I need more armor because some of my older armor was now completely decayed. Fortunately I have some at home, so I head toward my house on Correlia.

- All my waypoints mysteriously disappeared. I can't find my house now. I drove around for 20 minutes, and finally found it.

- Upon arriving in my house, a GIANT GUBBER chases me inside! Okay, no problem there... I pull out my long vibro axe... CAN'T USE IT, NOT QUALIFIED... Okay, no problem there... I pull out my Tusken Rifle... CAN'T USE IT, NOT QUALIFIED. Okay, now this is a problem. I'm already down to 50% health by now. I pull out a CDEF Rifle (yes, a CDEF) which is the only thing I had on me because I looted it a week ago. I fire at the gubber, and do minimal damage. I'm about to die, so I run outside my house and just on my swoop and speed away. Yes, where I once took on 5 stormtroopers without a sweat, I have now been evicted from my house by a gubber.

- I drive far enough away to stop combat, then I turn around and head back home. When I get off my swoop I am attacked by three gubbers. I am immediately incapicitated.... THREE TIMES. Fortunately I managed to get up, and head back to town.

- I still needed to get some armor, so I decided I would head back to Dantooine since I can't get into my house. There are some GREAT armor shops on Dantooine, so I knew I could find something. So I fly to Dant, and drive to my favorite armor shop. I park my swoop outside and I am immediately killed by a HUURTON.

- I clone, figured this was a fluke, so I drove my to my armor shop. This time I am attacked by a level 2 BABY HUURTON. Fortunately, my CDEF did manage to take it out. But the baby did 50% health damage to me. As soon as the baby is dead, one of those SHAMAN types runs over (still a lower level than me) and kills me instantly.

- I clone.

- I logout.

- I visit www.starwarsgalaxies.com and cancel my pre-order of RAGE OF THE WOOKIES. I don't think I'll need it.

In sum, I died three times and I was incapacitated three times within the span of 90 minutes. I arrived optimistic and ready to enjoy the new system. My goal for today was just to get some new armor. All I did was decay my old armor to the point that it is useless. So I accomplished nothing. And I certainly didn't have "fun" (which is why I play in the first palce).

I'm still optimistic, though. I think I just need to give the developers some more time to work things out. And if they can't, then I guess I'll leave. No big deal.

Saw.

LOL! Most of my skill boxes on my Jedi that i worked ages to do have no all gone :(

It's too Hard to level i died twice against Npc  i used to do well at :S I'm now -800k in debt

Thought whats the point of the CU double xp if i can't even grind! They shoudl make it so you can't lose xp so you have time getting used to it :(

Totally ruined a perfectly good game!

It needed changes elsewhere like having good raids :|

I don't know what SOE was thinking here.  They took what was a questionable game anyway, and made it worse.  I'm glad I haven't been playing the game long, so I don't have that much invested in it.  Cancelled my account and cancelled my expansion pre-order.  Take my advice and leave this one to the Star Wars fanbois.

To the OP- What do you mean when you say you are a level 39 pikeman? Are there levels now in the CU? Last time I played, there werent any levels.

    SWG has levels now?

I just logged in myself.  Combat Level 80 Master Rifleman.  While I can't wear my composite armor anymore (maybe I can fix that - though I don't really care to see or wear composite ever again), I didn't run into very many issues with gameplay.

I logged in and was still able to handle the same targets I used to.  And I didn't have to buff at that!

Lots of people were having a hard time, though.  I wish I could see what they're seeing, and I realize it's hard to adapt to a completely new system, but I think there needs to be a certain acceptance - especially after a year of hype - that the old way of playing just won't translate.

EDIT: I should also qualify that I'm not the type of person who ran off soloing rancors all the time, so I haven't gone that hardcore.  Don't really plan to, unless with a group.

DrSaw, have you thought of fighting in space with space vehicles? If I have trouble fighting on land, I'd much rather fight in space.

So you aren't even interested in learning how to play the game? Well..your loss ::::39::

My 90 min of SWG sucked as well.  I have recently logged back into SWG since release way back when.  I have a droid engineer who used to be able to wear light armor... not anymore.  I was practically naked with some cloth pants on.  I couldn't use any of my previous weopons even though I have rank 4 in pistols.  I couldn't find a CDEF pistol to buy, so I hunted with my fists since I have unarmed 3.  I managed to kill lvl 4 mobs which took half my health to kill.  I couldn't find any mobs harder than that around raustuss on Rori.  The whole planet was filled with abandoned buildings and towns.  There were no PC's around.  This is on Ahazi by the way.  My 2.8Ghz P4 with my GeForce 5800 still can barely run this game faster than 10fps and 30 out side of town.  And this is after I reduced the graphics.  image  Oh, and all the mobs are rainbow colored because of some glitch with the combat upgrade I heard after starting a new char on another server just to find other players.  IMO, the new icons do not look like anything in StarWars, the old ones were much better.  I don't know what the heck is going on with this game, but I used to like StarWars, and this game makes me hate it.  I hope another company gets the StarWars license and makes a real starwars game with MMORPG elements in Space and on planets.  Oh, and I don't want to have to pay to go into outerspace.  I'm not going to buy the expansion though I planned on it, but SWG is just not fun anymore.  I thought the game just might run better after giving them nearly 2 years to optimize code.  Well, the game runs the same, and with the CU the game doesn't feel like starwars, so there's really no point to play it.  I'll just have to wait for the next generation MMORPG to come out in another 1-2 years.  Thanks.image

I enjoyed everyone's responses. I've been reading the threads in the CU forum at starwarsgalaxies.com and I'm amazed that there have ben 10,000+ posts in 72 hours (if I'm reading it correctly).

Tonight I'm off, so I'm going back into SWG and I'm going attempt to find some armor somewhere and then maybe I can figure the new system out. I have been a loner for the most part, and I am now considering getting with a guild so I can actually accomplish some quests. You know, I guess I just have to forget about solo combat. The big downside, now, is that I can't even drive around Dantooine without an escort. Maybe if the animals were so damn aggresive, it would be better.

I'll post a update if I figure anything out.

I'm anxious to here how your weekend goes. I plan on coming back after the expansion comes out. But if I keep reading these horror stories I might not. Or maybe I will just to see if it's really that bad.

What I cant understand is why are we being forced to group?  I also have been a player that enjoyed just doing my own thing.   I really never liked having to spend time finding a group then following them around.  With this new system, once you master any combat profession you are forced to be in a group to fight same level creatures.  The game just isnt fun anymore.  This really does feel like work to me now.

So I went an played tonight for two hours after work. Before I did, I read all the tips and such on the SWG website about the CU, hoping maybe I would figure something out. So after I did this, I logged in and played. First of all there was a rollback, so I lost everything I did yesterday. No big deal, because all I did was destroy my armor. But this time, I managed to buy some armor and I was ready to go.

So I went out to a mission terminal and chose a mission, which I would assume would give me some XP. I drove 1500m to the mission site, and completed the mission. I received 3 XP total for all of my kills. Three!! And by this time I was playing for about 30 minutes.

So let's do the math. I only have about an hour to play each night, and I don't have time to group up with folks and try to stay together. I need about 450,000 more XP before I can become master pikeman. Assuming I can play one hour daily, every day, and earn 6 XP per hour... it will take me 205 years to become a Pikeman. Yes, let me repeat that.... TWO HUNDRED AND FIVE YEARS.

Man, I can't believe what this game has turned into. I guess I need to look for some alternative or something.

I can't try out the CU it'll take me 55 hours to download it, and after read the post's here all I got to say is HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I'm glad SOE finally fucked up SWG maybe now Lucasarts will take it away from them.

Not only are there levels but there's a damage multiplier dependent on what level you are relative to the enemy you're fighting.

An example from the test center: A level 6 and level 16 player group and take on a level 16 enemy. Level 16 player moves away so only the level 6 player is in combat. Level 16 enemy is hitting that player for 50 HP. The 2 players ungroup while combat continues. The SAME level 16 enemy now hits the SAME level 6 player for 300HP ::::06::

Further tests showed that this also worked for damage done by players to the enemies as well. Some math was done showing an arithmetic relation that reached 100% within 5 levels above or below relative to the player level.

Well I did it... I can't believe it, but I did it. I cancelled my SWG account. I tried the CU, honestly I did, but I just can't play the game the way SOE wants me to.

I just purchased Guild Wars and will be playing with that one over the weekend. Maybe I'll see some of you there?

For those with long download times ..

    a) Copy your test center patch 15 and 16 files ... download = 5 min for the rest. Be sure to run "Full scan" before you play.

    b) if you are in a guild .. have them burn you a CD and send it

    c) Use a download manager instead of the build in downloader (multiple channel download is your friend).

    Have fun

    General Gameplay
Found an issue where players were having fun, and removed it.  Added system messages that will spam you every 30 seconds, in order to remind you that you are excited!  IE:  Did you know that this message is very exciting?!?
    AI
Hid the levels and cons of all creatures so that gameplay would be more exciting!
    Buffs
Moved all Buff schematics to Master ID to make the profession more exciting!
    Crafting

Made some more changes that we won't announce.  It should be very exciting to try and figure them out on your own.  I'm excited just thinking about it!
    Combat

You must now deathblow creatures, just like players.
    Removed deathblow command.
    Exciting!
    Structures

Removed all player structures from the game.  They were causing too much lag.  In their place, we have added a cute new Icon.  It is very exciting.
    Professions
Turned all ranged professions into X's, and all melee professions into O's. We will figure out Jedi later when our hangovers have passed.  Whatever we decide to do with them, rest assured it will be exciting!
    GCW

Reinstated battlefields in a brand new and exciting way!  Upon entering, you will see a criss-cross board.  Place X's and O's in the proper order to win.  This revolutionary idea will be very exciting!
    Pets

You may now train wookiees as pets.
Added new command:  /excite - Excites the pet so much that sparkly effects shoot out of their orifices.
    Vehicles / Mounts

Added Sparkly animations while moving, similar to the mount/dismount animation, but unique and exciting!
    UI

Removed the ability to use spatial, emotes, tells, and email.  Quiet people are happy people, and probably excited as well!

The archer who overshoots his target, misses just as much as the one who falls short.

Shubbs, see you in GW! I've enjoyed it so far, but I miss some of the non-combat aspects of MMORPGs, and it seems that GW lacks this. But nevertheless, I have much less lag and I've met some great people. And it seems SO incredibly balanced at this point, it is amazing. I've not see stability and balance like this in a new game EVER.

If you need a guild, let me know. I was invited into The One Guild (ONE) and these guys are fantastic. I think there is about 10-15 of us right now, and we are growing daily. It is a cooperative guild about helping people level up and get the supplies they need for quests and such. You can go solo, group up, whatever you like to do -- no pressure. There are some very nice folks in it, and we've got a cool cape too. ;-) We're saving up for a guild hall, but that is still a little ways away.

My name in the game is Saw Trevaleian, so feel free to add me to your friends list and drop me a line sometime if you are interested in ONE.

    Hope you see you there!

Yeah, that would be a pretty low level character. I am just guessing, but I would imagine it would be less than 20 -- but with Sony, who knows. Maybe you'll be able to RESPEC into a Jedi Knight or something. LOL

Just be careful if you come back, don't carry to much around because it will decay rapidly after you get killed 2-3 times an hour. (And I mean this in all seriousness)

It's my understanding that there are great boosts in your level when you have a master level in an elite profession. I would guess, like the other that mentioned, you would be around 20. That's only a guess based on what I've heard from others that were playing.

    so...
