Last week, MMORPG.com's Drew Wood had the opportunity to spend some time with the Sony Online Entertainment Studios in Austin, Texas. During his time there, Drew scored some hands on time with DC Universe Online. Drew has a few things to say about DCOU. Check it out then fly to the forums and let us know what you think!
I spent last week in Austin, TX with the team at Sony Online Entertainment at their studio where I was presented with the opportunity to tour the facility and chat with members of the development team. Perhaps most exciting, though, was that I was also granted the opportunity to have a little one-on-one time with the game itself, DC Universe Online.

Thanks for sharing the info. It sounds quite cool. I am really into these more actiony MMOs. While it does not satisfy all my needs, it sure is something aim to play.
I just wonder how difficult it is? Making combos never was my strength, alas. Guess we have to wait and see.

nice summary. combos aren't difficult, one thing i have found is you need to time it with your characters animation. combos are also listed under you powers so if you ever forget, just look there and you'll know it, there isnt a "discovery" to it. very action oriented game. it sounds a bit odd but it flows really well in game
Alright, my curiosity went from zero to a healthy amount.
Seems like a soild game so far and looks really good for being in beta testing still.
Thankfully, most of us should be getting beta invites in the next couple of weeks. I look forward to trying this out myself.
It sounds like the game is exactly what I was hoping it would be, and may just be the game for me. I always love combos, and I love action oriented gameplay. I'll be playing on my PC, but with the combos the way they are described I'm going to HAVE to use a controller.
This system may not mesh with what some players look for on this site, but it sounds nothing less than awesome to me, and the preview was exactly what I needed for a renewed hope on this title. Great job.
Sounds like a terrible mix of good and bad qualities coming together to make something mediocre. The combat system being new could be good, but mixing combos and mouse-click attacks with a shortcut bar is awkward. I've played games that have done this (it's not that innovative, especially if you're into gams like Dungeon Fighter and Vindictus), and having to break your hand from the action of moving with the mouse/keyboard to click a button just never quite feels like it meshes with your hand. Not for me anyway. Other games have gotten around this by allowing you to assign shortcuts to a mouse press or by creating ways to cast the spell with a combination of movement and mouse press (a la fighting game 'special moves') so that could work.
But it seems a waste to go out of the way to be different with your fighting system, then be lazy with your quests and just throw the 'kill x of x' quests at your players. It's a step forward, and a step backward at the same time which basically leaves you...where you started in the first place.
At least it's purdy.

This sounds right up my street.
The combo's are what excite me the most, I will be very interested to see how these play out in an MMO, and wether they do affect the challenge of the game.
I did not expect anything different with the questing system tbh, the game looks and sounds as if it has plenty more besides to keep me rooted to my screen, the PvP side of the game also has me intrigued, so questing will probably remain as a side line for me.
I look forward to getting my hands on this game, just a shame it got pushed to next year =(.
The combo system is fresh and suprisingly easy to get the hang of. Even with a mouse/keyboard setup. I've been tempted to test out a gamepad on it, but honestly, I haven't felt a need to.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Nice to get an opinion but not much said that I didn't expect to hear so far.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
My advice is to try to get a beta invite or try a friends beta before investing in this game. That's not to say it's a bad game, but it's very different from the game mechanics of an average MMO. It is an online action game. Like I said it's not a bad game, it's just different and don't want people to spend money and get a product completely different than they are expecting. Not going to put a lot of info about the game here, but if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me.
I love my Traditional MMORPGs but am not married to any one type of game as the author implies. This too sounds like ti could be fun and if it has the content and satisfactory support, maybe even long term fun.
I never meant to imply that all Traditional MMOers were reluctant to change. I implied that there is a subsect of traditional MMOers who are. Just to clarify. *thumbs up*
Hey Drew can I ask a question?
How was the intuitive was the combo system on the keyboard/mouse setup?
It almost sounds like its going to be clunky if youre not using a controller.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
NDA.. still in effect... come on now people.
From what I hear the ranged combat sucks pretty hardcore. So if you liked using ranged weapons in CO and blasters/corruptors in CoX you will be disappointed unless they improve it quite a bit.
Really?
From what I heard it's the greatest combat system ever and when you destroy enemies they explode into confetti and tiny faries scream "Yaaay" and give you candy.
Or at least that's what I heard...not like I've seen it myself.
In other words if your going to make a comment like that, especially on a very specific system, you should probably have some first hand experience on it.
I want to love this game, but there's no way I'd pay 14.99 a month for this. It'd all depend on what else is there to do other than smash zerging robots.
You are corect sir and I apologise...I think from many posts here that a lot of gamers,as is their right of taste and opinion,do only enjoy certain types and/or niches. In the end no game is gonna appeal to everyone.
Edit: Typos
Saying your in Beta breaks the NDA........
My question is, Is the world mega instanced? Or is it more open.
Supposedly, the game worlds are open, and large, though they are broken into zones, there is no loading screen between them (afaik). You will have to load when going into instances, and you will have to load when going across city barriers.
There is no districting.
Alright, that's what I have been wondering about since it was announced. I'm sick of instanced super hero MMOs.
Usually around 4 world (street) missions followed by an instanced mission to wrap up the story arc.
Why would they be graphically limited on pet animations? They shouldn't be different from character / enemy animations.
