What we know so far can be found here:  http://www.tera-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8109

    Quote:

Hello everyone. After looking over the PvP forums, I realized that there are a lot of questions and misunderstandings about PvP. While we do not know a lot about PvP, I want everyone to be on the same page in these forums.

I propose that we keep information here for those who are just starting here. I realize that I may miss information every once in a while, so it would really help me out if when someone notices this they post what I should change, in addition to the source of this change.

    Q: How does PVP work?

A: PVP will be on a sever-by-server basis, meaning that players who chose to participate in PVP may do so but those who do not, will not be required to play on severs that allow PVP. There are no predetermined factions in TERA, but we expect guilds to come into conflict with each other and PVP will be one way that conflict is expressed. Since we're still making adjustments based on feedback from the FGTs and Beta tests, we'll share further details on PVP in the future.

Q: Any thoughts on a class ranking system based on PvP records?

A: We’re working on a variety of web-based data to provide users.

Q: Please tell me that on a PvE server I can completely opt out of fighting other players if I so choose!

A: Yes, you will be able to opt out of PvP combat on a PvE server.

Q: Will there be various forms to PvP?

A: Yes, PvP will occur in a variety of scales.

Q: How will instanced PvP be different from open PvP? Will Battlegrounds give the same rewards/achievements as open PvP? Will TERA support full open world PvP with player killing (PK)? Will there be anything gained from killing a player? Is full loot PVP being considered?

A: TERA’s development is ongoing meaning that these and other PvP options are all being considered. Anticipate more specific answers to these valid questions in coming weeks.

MMO Base: Will TERA offer players PVP arenas or will PVP be mostly done in an open world?

Jason: All servers will have battlegrounds and duels. There will be open-world PvP servers, and PvE servers where PvP is restricted to the battlegrounds and dueling areas.

MMO Base: How will the endgame rewards for PVP and PVE in TERA work?

Jason: The endgame rewards will include a lot of loot of course, but both PvP and PvE players will find themselves embroiled in the politics of the Valkyon Federation at higher levels. There will be political rewards for the ambitious and well-connected, including an unprecedented way to shape the history of the server.

Onlinewelten: Will you reward PvP actions with special points - we heard something about valkyon points?

Jason Mical: Valkyon points are part of the political system, and yes they are associated with PvP as well. Political clout can be gained by defeating enemies—especially very skilled ones—or enemies with clout of their own.

Obsolete Gamer: Healers in PVP are sometimes considered overpowered because of their ability to withstand damage and heal themselves, how have you dealt with this?

Brain Knox: We’re not looking at each class on a one-to-one basis with regard to PvP. We have designed our game for group PvP encounters, and that is our goal in balancing the classes.

Amira: Will there be a separation between PvP and PvE gearsets?

Brian: Right now that’s not our goal. Our goal is to provide possibly skills that would work a little bit better in PvE versus PvP. It’s more that route versus having different gear sets, because, especially when you’re out and about, you don’t want to be like, “Oh, I have to switch my gear.”

Q: What kind of bonuses (Gear, Experience, Titles) one can expect from PVP?

A: We’re still finalizing the specifics of our PvP rewards. Achievements are definitely on the menu, and you can wager gold against other players if you think you’re good enough.Additionally, rewards for Battleground PvP will play a role in the Federation’s political system!

Q: What kind of bonus-malus will a PK’er receive for killing other players in PVP servers?

A: This is still in the works, so nothing’s final, but we’ve been playing with the idea of involving the game’s political system.

Q: Will the Battlegrounds always be open, or only at specific times?

A: Yes, Battlegrounds will always be open and will work across servers to fatten the player pool.

Q: Will guilds be rewarded for successful PVP, and if so how?

A: Yes; there’s always prestige, of course, and we’ll have achievements. Also, guilds that dominate the PvP scene will find themselves in very strong political positions.

Q: Reading the second part of the client change summary from Mr. Blue that TERAFans translated, some players thought TERA might become another equipment-based game. What can you say about that?

A: Equipment will play a big role in the game, but it’s a bit of a stretch to say that the game will be “equipment-based.” The single most important element of combat will be skill: if you’re not adept at using your character's abilities--moving around, dodging, and attacking at the right moment--then all the legendary gear in the world won’t be worth much.

    Edit:08/04/10

MMORPG.com:We have seen a lot about TERA, but little talk has been made about PvP in the game. Can you share some of the PvP Features the game will have?

Brian Knox:TERA will include a variety of PvP. All servers will have battlegrounds that will guilds to battle for bragging rights. There will also be single and party duels where players can bet gold on the winner. On our open-world PvP servers, allies can become enemies as players and guilds can turn on one another, destroying their former alliances. With TERA's action combat system, PvP skills will truly separate the n00b from the 1337.

Edit:08/05/10 somehow I forgot to put these in

Q: In the past someone mentioned a “declaration of PVP” in PVP servers – how will this work?

A: We want to create a system that allows for full PvP freedom but discourages ganking. The declaration of PvP you’re referring to is something in the Korean version of the game that warns a PK target you’re about to kill them, which we actually removed in our first Focus Group Test to see how the game worked without it. It’s not quite perfect yet but we’re getting close.

Q: Will the PVP system will be more oriented toward solo PVP, group PVP or mass PVP?

A: The most fitting answer to that question is really "all of the above." We set out to give players as much choice as possible when it comes to TERA’s PvP. Dueling is a basic feature of the game--anyone on any server can initiate or take part in a duel. Groups will inevitably come into conflict with one another both on large battlegrounds and in smaller-scale skirmishes. At higher levels, players will come into contact with other player groups more and more often, so at that point you’ll see a natural move toward group or mass PvP.

Q: What can you tell me about PvP rewards?

A: TERA will have a variety of rewards for PvP activities. For example, PvP is one way for players to achieve public office in the game's political system—literally killing your way into positions of power and prestige!

Q: What else can you tell us about PvP?

A: Battleground teams will be able to create a Commander—a leader who has access to special abilities that benefit the entire group. For example, the Commander may be able to call upon a high-damage spell that affects a large area—including his own group if they don't move out of the way!

Eikju: Another new point would be whether or not there will be PvP-Sets. We know about the PvE-Sets you get from normal Mobs as well as crafted Stuff. Can you tell me something about it?

Christian Witte: Regarding pvp we havent and do not want to give out that much since we are still working on a lot of details. I cant tell you by 100% whether or not there will be PvP-Sets. It could really be since there are pvp players which would like to have a Set for this part, but i wont give you a warranty.

-seems to contradict a previous quote, we'll have to see the official ruling on this later

Eikju:One more question regarding pvp. In TERA we will have the so called Battlegrounds. And in this BGs, as we know it from other games, there are different modes like „Capture the Flag“. Will this modes also be in TERA or have you imagined something completely new?

Christian Witte: There will be open BGs for pvp as well as Battlegrounds and Battlefields which are closed. There will most likely be these modes but not exactly „Capture the Flag“ but a variation of it which fit with the lore of TERA. Probably not exactly a flag that is attached to the back of the player. But pvp will certainly play a very important role. Thereby have designated teams the same chances as a groups that probably dont do as much pvp.

    09/21/10

MMORPG.com:One area in TERA that has not been talked about much is PvP. Can you tell us about some of the PvP elements to the game?

Scott:TERA has an amazing PvP system, which we believe will satisfy and excite all kinds of gamers. Depending on their location in the game, players (and their characters, of course) can initiate friendly duels, outright PK, or arrange mass battles with up to 20 players. There’s even an “iron man deathmatch” option in which one player can face off against up to 10 opponents! We are also actively exploring options for both PvE and PvP exclusive realms, as well as cross-server battlegrounds and end-game content.

    Quote from Scapes:

1.)"In a PvP scenario, if you are in a duel or open PvP area with an opponent player, they will be damaged by your area-of-effect spells."-In other words, you automatically hit those not in your party(maybe guild too) in PvP servers.

2.)"Currently, projectile attacks are not affected by model collision with party member characters. This may change."

what the? So I cant world PvP at all on a PvE server? But didnt they say above that, that we could flag for PvP in PvE servers?

I have to wonder. Is PvP FFA based?

That system is on the Korean server,  Koreans will only get one rule-set server (flagging system).  Western servers will have multi-rule-sets too choose from.

yes its ffa pvp, there isn't faction vs faction.

Also why would you go on a pve server if you want open pvp?

same reason I do on other games. because I want that freedom to jump in and out of world PvP when I feel up for world PvP.

Also the reason I asked if it's FFA, was because I was wondering how Guild vs Guild World PvP would play out. Will it have Friendly Fire?

From what I have read there won't be FF. I know they had a better answer on the Teraonline site.  http://www.tera-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10941

The problem with MMO PvP, IMO, is the inherently broad disparity of fighting capability among participants.  The Ebay influence is unstoppable.  It just becomes a joke. Look at Lineage 2.  The top PvP clans are universally dropping tens of thousands a month into Ebay just to compete with each other, leaving normal players no place at the table.  How fast you type your credit card details into  a RMT site is the defining skill in PvP MMO's.

What are they buying in order to compete? I don't understand what you are talking about.

Did you play L2?  They buy Adena, they buy characters, they buy equipment, items, bots, etc. etc.  I know a group of players that bought an entire high level clan with l33t skills and a top clan hall.  Knowing the guy they bought it from, I know he wouldn't let it go for less than $20k.  The characters in these clans are worth $2k each, easily.  The gear each character has is worth another $3k at least.  I'd estimate that clan alone has spent well over $400k on buying in-game assets in the last two years.

Try competing with that, using the rinky-dink items you made just by playing the game.  Yes, it's not sane.  Welcome to the worlds most competitive PvP MMO... Hell I put $500 in myself and I'm considered a complete non-factor gear wise.  It's only PvP for the rich kids blowing their trust fund.  Everyone else is just food for them.

Well seeing that Tera has collision detection and free aiming, I would have to guess the game will be more about controlling and aiming your attacks and less about gear.

Gear will play a part but not as much as you see in traditional mmo's.  And if you look at it in that respect then Tera has nothing in common with L2.

I think it might be true but it still is a problem that will stay within L2. The inevitable grind to reach high lvl, the insane amount of in-game currency and resources it takes to upgrade your gear and to earn it, no wonder why competitive clans tend to put money in RMT services. However, I haven't met such a big problem in other MMOs so I don't expect this to be here. Besides, this game is more about your gameplay and less about gear.
