Guild Wars 2: My Life in Tyria

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Guild Wars 2 team has promised many amazing things for the game, things that have fans excited in ways they haven't been for a long time. Among these promises is the idea of story. Players will have a "personal story". In his latest Guild Wars 2 column, MMORPG.com's Bill Murphy takes a look at the personal story and offers some insight into what it all means. Check it out and then jump into the discussion on our forum.

A while back I wrote a column about Guild Wars 2 and its approach towards fostering role-play through the options players are presented with when questing about the game world. This week, I’d like to revisit the most important facet of how this could be accomplished by talking a bit about ArenaNet’s approach to “personal story” in Guild Wars 2. More succinctly, I want to talk about how the developers are promising to bring story back to the forefront of MMO gaming and how each player’s experience will be different from the next. It’s a tall order, and ArenaNet isn’t the only company on the block trying to make story an important aspect of MMOs, but if they can actually pull off some of what they’re promising there will be quite a few happy gamers.

This weekend, I logged in to Guild Wars for the first time in several months.  It's amazing how rusty you can get after that short of a length of time. I thought to myself " Man I know I didnt suck this bad", or " How in the world do I have so many lvl 20 characters playing as bad as I am right now" lol.

    I can has now? :(

I can't remember the last time I actually bothered reading quest text or anything about lore. When did I give in to the 'kill crap and level up' mentality? D: It all happened so fast! Save me Anet T_T

An mmorpg that actually draws inspiration from REAL roleplaying games instead of just copying other computer games? Ha ha ArenaNet really do seem to be giving this genre a great big kick up the arse. Not only are they providing a game world that changes due to the players actions, but those players can also create an actual character (instead of killing machine #765654654) which the game world reacts to accordingly. These guys are trying to get as close as they can to a true pen and paper roleplaying game. Thats pretty awesome.

GW2 just cant arrive fast enough.  Not so much for the story aspect, but the effort that they are putting into game-play, and without a subscription model.

Yeah this should be one heck of a game when it hits

I know more people looking forward to GW2 than ANYTHING else

  • eye_meye_m Member UncommonPosts: 3,317

I am really interested to see how this improves the player RP or if it does at all.  GW was the only game that I actually read and listened through the storyline to take in the lore, so I hope that I enjoy it as much.

One of my fears for GW2 is the naming system. I've been amazed how no other mmo's (that I've played) have the ability to use a space in the character name.  I hate having a name like Johnsmith, or Herbiehancock. Maybe it's not a big deal to others but with the extra care they are putting to all the aspects in this game, I sure hope they don't forget that one.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

What really interest me is the fact that all this is just one of the many things around the game.

TOR is aiming for the same thing but it seems to me that they are focusing almost everything on one card while GW2 have several good concepts, like the Dynamic world and the mists too.

I think that will make the game last a lot longer, if you are tired of RPGing you go crack some skulls in the mist or G Vs G PvP instead.

Fun MMOs are about choices, and if you have many kinds of gameplay to choose between you wwill ave a lot more fun.

I wonder how they will handle Guildhalls now? Similar to the housing, the old way or maybe something similar to AoCs guild city?

I haven't seen so much hype for a game since WAR. I can't wait for this game as games always live up to their hype!!

    ... er wait ...

But really, I hope it is good.

There's a few highlights in there, looking very good. I'm most interested to learn more about the support cast and personalities beyond merely major VIP's in Tyria, something that Bioware with Mass Effect did so well. If they can achieve this then the story in GW2 will work for me.

IDK, I would kinda like it to be like ro's WOE alittle bit like if my guild takes this castle it should be our guild base or whatever. Hopefully it isnt exactly like fallout in terms of your actions because everytime somone from ceasers legeon starts running off at the lip a little to much they die and i dont want to be hated. hopefully they keep some humor in the quests like aions asmodians where you have to see why the lazy servernt isnt getting the oil out on time so they want u to beat him or wows cataclism where you have to shock the slaves to get them back to work. OR even city of heroes gone rogue where its like all villany in a humors way. i just dont way a game thats so serious its like blah like on Lineage2 or Vanguard, And FF11 and FF14. GIive us some funny but dont take us to cartoon land is what i want to say. Hope for the best but pray its not the worst.(FF14)

I don't know if I could get any more excited about this game than I already am without losing complete control over my bladder.

I agree. Choice (and so variety) is a key factor for long term fun in MMOs. That and a good social group.

I really respect the lengths Anet are going here to make a large game, especially given their payment model.

I simply cannot wait to try this game.

I look forward to how the whole concept of it will be intergrated . Finally haveing a game that will grow with you without bounderies will be a nice change from all the typical games as now.  Now will we still have the usal grind to get up there or will be be something totally different ?

It should come as some relief to you, then, to know that in the early days of GW1, there were name regulations that were enforced. Even when the player base got larger, they still required players to create names that had at least one space in the name; so the majority of the player base had first and last names (at least for a while).

I don't really know how they will handle names in GW2 tho... Because, according to the lore, Sylvari mostly only assume a first name after they awaken, Asura take the surname of the krew they are assigned to, and the Charr take a name relating to the legion and war-band they are trained with.

I have become a RABID fangirl of GW2 and I am NOT about to apologize for it.

I hold nothing against anyone who loves any game either released or soon to be released.  I harbor no ill will to those that are not given to excess of emotional outbursts or nerdgasm. If they can't see what I see in a game or upcoming game....I don't really care. Perhaps their eyes view the world through a different filter, as we all really do, since no two of us are exactly alike, our perceptions all differ to one degree or another.

But as for me and my house.....we will serve the lands of Tyria!  We long for the day we can set foot on her beautiful ground.

You can have a space in your character name, yes. The names must be, 3 characters or longer, and less than... 15(?) characters long. Spaces are allowed. But you don't have to have one. So you can have John Smith, Herbie Hancock, or Biff The Slyff.

Interesting question actually. What we do know is that humans and Chars could use space but didn't have to in the demo. With the rest I dunno know but I never seen a MMO enforcing names hard even on RPG servers, only dude I ever heard of being banned got banned from EQ2 for using the name "Osama" a long time ago (and it was kinda silly, it is a common name).

So RPGers will name their Charr and Asuras correctly, while the snottlings will probably have their usually silly names like L33TelF and similar things. Nothing really new in this way I fear.

'Cept that GW players have their own names protected, or so they said earlier. You have to use the same account for both games to be able to reuse your old name.

Your worried about humor from creators that gave you a quest called "Drakes on the Plain", had an NPC hidden in a back area (not generally explored area) of a mission named Gern Blansted, or any hundred of other pop culture jokes (strill love the skills "Shock" and "Awe").

I seriously don't get any of those examples of so-called humour... what is funny about "Drakes on the Plain" or Gern Blansted? And skill names like shock and awe seem to me to be typical for skill names... O.o

Drakes on the Plain is a joke about Snakes on a Plane. I dunno about the other 3 references. But there are plenty of them in the game. The skills "Never Surrender" and "Never Give Up" are references to Galaxy Quest, there is a boss monster named the Black Beast of Aarrrrgh a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, they celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day with grog drops that make your pc say pireatical things, "Make Your Time" is a skill take from the famous line from Zero Wing/All Your Base, there is an entire quest line based off of Street Fighter, and so many other things. I'm certain GW2 will have at least as many references.

My favorite was the singing of the Dhuum song, a reference to Invader Zim.

Why are you all against subscription? Cant you understand that game without subscrption open allways some kind of game store where you can buy gear, potions exct. Only way to have game regularly updated is subscription. Look at game like runes of magic or eq2, people buy and pay more money for some stupid upgrades of character. Where is the  fun when somebody pay with real cash for gear.
