So, wait... can you only get a beta key if you pre-order?

Bah. I always thought DC > Marvel anyways, and after reading this, I'm interested.

If I were in the beta, I would use a Xbox 360 controller as well.  Combos just sound like they work so much better with a controller than a mouse.  Plus it is coming out for the PS3 as well, so they are probably optimizing it for a controller.

I think I will be waiting for a trial on this one. Especially now that I have read this article and read what ambushbug73 wrote. It seems there is allot of limits to powers, UI and whatnot, which is a bit disappointing. A superhero shouldnt be limited to a certain power set before battle. Superman didnt say "I think I am just going to fight crime with my heat vision". Superman or rather all superheroes use all that they are given in a fight to gain that edge. At the same time I see why they are doing this. "Consoles". Not to knock them but there is limitations to what can be done. Only so many buttons can be mapped to a game pad, but on a keyboard and mouse its almost endless.

Animal/pet animations also threw me off. It took me a moment to figure out why they couldnt animate to a full potential and thats because PS3 or any consoles for that matter can not scale back the graphics to help boost performance like you can on PCs.

Dont get me wrong, I am not bashing DC Online or Consoles. I love the DC universe and my PS3, but I just wish SOE could have separated the two or rather make two separate versions of the game so that those with PCs wont be limited to what one can do with DC Online. I hope SOE can make this a great game and that it blows my expectations away. But for right now my expectations are not that high.

    While I agree with what you've said I do want to throw in that;

    1) I think being able to make creative combos with your powers is a lot more interesting than hotbar hunting to activate the proper ability needed for the time. 2) Maybe like what Champions did well in beta and then sort of just forgot about, a lot of powers can be situational depending on distance and location to the enemy. I don't know if DCUO has implimented this, but I always figured it'd be a great way to add more powers and fewer hotbars.

I for one fucking hate having 18 hot bars all over the place to house what my guy can do and was hoping for a bit more innovation in that department rather than simply limiting them.

I am still hoping for a Beta invite.  I did pre-order weeks ago, there was no confirmation on the page when I posted my reciept, and no confirmation email.  So I'm not even sure it worked.

I am both excited, and tentative about this game.  Being able to be part of and see the DC Universe is just so awesome.  But, at the same time I am hesitant about the "action" focus of this game.

Just hope I get a chance in Beta.

I just want to say that you have one fantastic looking character, there, Drew. Well done.

From what I understand they are letting pre-orders in beta in groups, with all pre-orders in by November 30th.

"They merge the typical console-adventure, hack-and-slash game, with the MMO. It's not turn based combat. If I can click my mouse buttons fast enough, I can put these clowns down before any real damage is done to me. "

This worries me QUITE a bit.

Is this game going to be played with controllers as well? If so, it might be tough for traditional keyboarders. I don't know too many people who can click a mouse faster than they can click controllers when it comes to PvP action.

This may be why you were getting schooled in the PvP. If you were playing mouse, you could have been handicapped right off the bat.

I would like to see more about the game other than the actiony combat and iconic characters.  It was nice to hear a bit more details about how some of the bits work together, but it was very disappointing to see how quickly the content was glossed over as just being typical quest grinding.

Other than the combat and seeing named DC characters what really gripped you about the game?  What makes you want to come back for more?

Guess I should have included *wink wink nudge nudge* with my "from what I hear" line.

I also 'heard' that melee attacks blow ranged attacks out of the water when it comes to DPS (damage per second) and nearly half the special attacks on ranged weapons like bows and dual pistols are melee in nature. I know when I think of a character like Green Arrow I imagine him bonking enemies on the head with his bow instead of using all the special arrows he went out of his way to invent.

after 10 solid years of playing with SOE games, i finally gave up recently due reasons i will not list here.  This game, however, may just be what it takes to get me back into the SOE fold.

I am hoping for the best.  The girlfriend and I are tired of waiting on the new star wars mmo and are longing to play something online...  after all, we met at the 2007 fan faire and are now living together...

Or if you're tech savy there are ways of getting the PS3 controller to work with the PC. That's what I plan to use anyways, worked wonders for me in FF14 (shame the game was terrible though).

Melee attacks SHOULD do more DPS than Ranged attacks. That's how most MMOs are are balanced anyways. The ranged classes in WoW really can't compete with the Melees in sustained raid dps.

I agree and raise you the fact that melee attacks also require a longer engagement time to actually be able to deal that damage.

It seems to me this is made primarily for consoles, with that kinda controls for the avatar.

Doesn't sound like the best way to solve a combat system for the PC. They should look to AoC if they want a more action oriented system, instead of regular target then spam abilities.

It will probably work great on a console as is, but I don't think a lot of PC MMO gamers would want to play a "port".

"powers that do not necessarily fit within your chosen power option, but are common to super heroes (selections included Heat Vision, Super Strength, and the like)."

By what definition are super strength and heat vision 'common'? This seems very odd, take CoX system they realised your powers defined you so they had separate sets. This seems very mix and match, will everyone be flying around with super strength and heat vision, Supermen one and all apart from your sorcery power?

I would definitely wait and see how this plays on a PC before I got it for sure.

I'm looking forward to this and the many other mmos that are on the way, We all know we need something fresh and innovative to desperately save us from the crap that is available. Although I couldn't get something out of my head when I first saw combos mentioned and some of the first screenshots and gameplay footage. What I couldn't let go of was how much this game is reminding me of the Justice League heroes and X-Men Legends console games. I have no problem with that those games are pretty good. Albeit the X-men and Marvel Ultimate Alliance ones play much better. I'm sure a lot of people on here have played these games and may see what I see also, if not. Search for some info on the games i've mentioned and see if any of you have the same feeling.

Is this what the combos will be like?

Will the teaming up of powers be like these games also?

    I sure hope so.

The NDA is still in effect, but I really feel this game is being marketed as something it's not. It is being marketed as an MMORPG to the masses but once your in your told it's not it's an action game. The game is a dang good action game, I can't state that enough. My post is more of a buyer beware, make sure it's the type of game you want to play.

A lot of MMORPG players will be turned off by the fact that the level cap is 30 which can be reached in 2-5 days playing a couple hours a day. They have stated that they are not worrying about people leveling, they just see the 30 levels as a long tutorial to get you ready for the content. You will not be leveling up beyond that, which is probably for the best for the second point.

Some MMORPG players will not like the fact that you can get dozens of powers but you are limited to having only 6 in your hotbar, your one hotbar that you are allowed. They have stated that they are firm on the fact that you will not have multiple hotbars and not be able to use more than 6 powers at a time in that bar. As an action game format it works, you never have access to your mouse pointer while playing only on the menu screen, that takes some getting use to as well. You can't click your powers, or other people.

One of the biggest complaints has been the lack of power sets. There are only 6 and you are locked into a specific role dependent upon the power set you choose. Fire and Ice are tank sets. Devices and Mental are controllers. Sorcery and Nature are healers. Also you only have three body types to choose from, small medium and large. Not much customization on the body at all, a few different skins but not much. The costume creator seems lacking at first, but in game you find many many costume pieces that you can use or just equip cosmetically. So while costumes are unique enough body type and size isn't.

The world itself is beautiful, Gotham and Metropolis are breath taking, but other graphical limitations being placed on the game by it being released on the PS3 and PC are troubling. For an example all pets are pretty much non animated with the exception of the crow which they used as a test piece to see if they could use more animation for pets, but the answer is no. They stated that due to the limitations of the PS3 that we would have very cardboard type pets such as turrets.....tons of different turrets, and healers place down stationary objects as their pets. These limitations really puzzle me considering that they recently announced that the PC and PS3 games would not be cross platform, just seems as if there is some wiggle room there.

As I've said before, and I can't say enough, it's not a bad game at all. If your looking for a good solid action game I would highly recommend it, but if your looking looking for something more along the lines of an MMORPG, which I assume a lot of people on this website are, then attempt to give it a try before purchasing is all I'm saying.

Sorry dude, but there is a lot of incorrect information / personal opinion here. Misleading at best.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

I am  very interested in the combat system that  Is if it is not like swg and fallen earth were you got to keep your mouse targeted at the bad guy.  I would like to see it in action.   The graphics look great.

So my interest meter went up some.

I applied for beta hopefully I can get in.

I found the game play to be rather refreshing. The questing system I like! Not having to play quest relay is a welcome chage and also fits into the time line of the game. It is different than any mmo I have played to date and do enjoy it over all and as it was said in the article that many will not like it but that will likely be out weighed by the folks who love the IP.

  • mukinmukin Member UncommonPosts: 80

Nice review.  I was interested before.  Now I might even be...(dare I say it?)...excited.

game seems cool, lol not corny and ghey like all the other super hero mmo's.  In fact I think I will try this game out.
