why would some players insist calling guild wars MMO?

Let's get it straight.....Guild Wars is NOT MMO, it should go in Diablo genre - Action Online RPG with a big lobby......

Thank you, I am glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.

Guild Wars is one of those wierd genre-benders.  It gets slapped with the "MMO" label because it's the closest fit for what genre this game belongs in.

I agree this is not an MMO in the classic sense.  But I don't care.  It's a damn good game regardless of whatever silly little anacronym people want to use to describe it.

Guild Wars is still an MMO.

Correct... But in it's defense it is a pretty 3d lobby with lots of shiny objects!

There is a forum search for a reason, this must be like the fiftieth post on the topic...

why do people care? is it because they don't like GW? Is it because they are scared GW will take guild members away? Is it because new MMO players may choose GW over the game they are playing?

I personally reckon Guild Wars would do better if no-one called it a MMORPG, that term makes people think of monthly subscriptions, griefing, loot stealing, boring levelling, people *forcing* RP on you. Calling it a more advanced D2 would surely attract the same blizzard fanbois that flocked to WoW...(and that's probably the reason it hasn't been marketed that way)

but personally i couldn't care less what you think of it, if it weren't for the fact that the pre-order for the US is taking a while to ship I'd be playing it rather than wasting time responding to troll-bait posts like these ::::35::

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Ok this here is my opinion.

ANY online game were you play with other people online with IS a MMO. MMO= Massive Multiplayer Online. No argument on the logic there.

BUT if you call Guild Wars a MMORPG then thats wrong. Its more a MMO Action game.

Even Diablo2 etc I see as a MMO.

Game cataorizing is just a was so people understand what the game is like, and what the buyers should exspect from it. Just like movies, books etc etc.

So that it falls under MMO is natural. But FAR from being a RPG. RPG=Role Playing Game. Due to its just hack & slash. Maybe simular to Planetside in a way.

The answer is simple.  You can party with anyone and everyone.  You can PvP anyone and everyone.  That makes GW MMO.  Just because it is designed differently from traditional games doesn't mean it isn't MMO.

The game isn't for everyone I have said that before.  But to say that GW isn't MMO is just down right stupid.

Also it is an RPG.  It has quests that actually make you feel like part of the story.  However as I stated in my review, it is almost impossible to RP with any other player other than your guild.  That is why GW is not a MMORPG but a CORPG.

sorry bud, but that depends on who you ask. I consider it an MMO because it retains alot of the MMO aspect (without the obstacles). Unlike Diablo, Guild Wars is always dynamically changing via updates, streaming technology, etc. It's not completely persisent nor it is completely instanced but I still see it as an MMO because my feeling of 'MMO' is not lost in the game.

I think that too. It's shameful that they call themselves an MMORPG.

Its shameful they provide us with some free online gamin and yet people still complane for a free too play game it isnt bad at all and there is plenty of mmo quality in it .Yeah instance bit isnt very great but in ways it is.
  • Think this has been like debated before. According too mmorpg mmo = more then 500 ppl online at any single instance. u see the difference is diablo when u create a instance, this instance is hosted on the host comp(the one who makes the room) while in GW its hosted on their server. Since ur still hosted in the server and the server can hold more then 500 ppl at one time and u can chat with them using the ingame chat system, i think it can be classified as an mmo lol just not the traditional kind....

Anyway their town is persistance where u can look at each other and chat. Even though its just something similar to an online chat room + graphics, its ability to hold mana different avatars at a single time and walking arnd classifies it as an element in the game which adds on to its mmo component.

I just bought GW today, and i wouldnt call it a MMORPG. Offcourse it it massive,  its Multiplayer online and yeah its roleplaying. However in my personal dictionary the word MMORPG mean a game with a online persistant world. And thats not the case in Guild Wars.

Allthough i had quite some fun untill now, im still sceptical about its lasting appeal.
