Lord of the Rings Online: Crafting Changes Detailed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Lord of the Rings Online crafting is going to undergo some significant changes in the next update. Included are improvements for the Farmer profession, new store items to make crafting more convenient and a brand new crafting panel. The team is also excited about a host of new recipes being added to the game.

Being a Farmer isn't easy. It takes a special sort of someone: A person with dedication, integrity, patience, and...inventory space? Yes, lots of inventory space!

Well, we've made some changes to the profession to help alleviate the burden of item management, as well as a major adjustment in the process of producing crops that will help all Farmers produce bigger harvests more quickly.

Good stuff! I love how turbine continues to put items in the store that people will want to buy but won't actually need to buy. The crafting recipe material packs are total win for alt rollers wanting to power level crafting. Turbine is so smart they're going to make a fortune with this game.

I love the farming changes.  It's been much needed for a long time.  It was a bit of a time sink.

Let me know when they quadruple the Tin spawns. then crafting will be fixed. Tin isn't supposed to be more valuable than Gold

I just wish that more of the craft items were useful and / or profitable....  For example, beer and tobacco are pointless gold sinks as far as I could ever tell.

Agreed and it's why I have always sung the praises of turbine with LOTRO this game more than any other mmorpg I have ever played truly innovates and streamlines the players experience and have done an excellent job of it.  From the constant redesign and streamlining of starter areas to additions like the shared storage and the free to play launch.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

It doesn't seem to be as much of a problem any more really. I mean I'm just starting on probably week 4 of playing lotro and I've gathered enough to make bronze to get me, and 2 other guys, out of the first tier without really feeling hassled. And I have no patience for gathering or crafting, my least favorite thing about mmos really but that's another argument. It could just be my gathering spot which does seem pretty barren compared to the other tin spawns.

Regardless, I suppose I like these changes. I never wanted to farm (literally farming?! nooo!!!) so knowing there will be more fresh taters on the market is a good thing.

This is a problem in all mmorpgs (non-sandbox). Once you get to max level the only crafters that are needed are those that make consumables. Potions, food, item enchants & stuff like that. As a crafter of weapons & armor yur best bet is crafting low level stuff for lowbies or selling materials. It's kinda sad that you need to play a sandbox game to feel like you matter in a mmo as a crafter.

Tobacco, yes a waste of money.  Beer, not so much.  As soon as my cooks made tier 5, they were able to make the money with beer, maybe a gold in 40 minutes with farming and cooking.  That is what they did to buy the stuff necessary to complete tier 6, a very costly tier to complete.

    Pro:

    - VAST Farming improvements

    - A few new recipies

    Con:

    - Even MORE ways to get money from players... But wait! If you BUY (giving money to Turbine/Warner), you can't let anyone else use the stuff you make!

    - An even BIGGER window to take up more of my screen. Yay.
