send him our way if you please , you know where we are, haha.
seriously though, i don't want swtor to fail. ill probably end up buying the damn game.
but i do sympathise with your friend's concern that the rest of the industry will be taking note, and the gaming industry (mmos in particular) are just getting duller and duller.
Hehe, I think he's more of an UO kind of guy, I don't know if he ever played SWG.
I agree that the MMORPG genre has been stale in the period of 2006-2010, especially compared to 1999-2005. i mean, you had all kinds of interesting developments and innovations in that earlier period, with RvR of DAoC, the great events in AC, the large flexibility and variety in gameplay in UO and SWG, an MMOFPS as Planetside with the largest massive scale warfare I've seen in an MMORPG, GW and CoH with its different combat mechanics, EQ showing off the 1st successful 3D MMORPG and introducing people to all the mechanics we've learnt to associate with MMORPG's.
It felt like the sky was the limit with MMORPG's, as if the future held a lot of promise, only progressing and evolving further on already interesting MMO gameplay. Instead, what has the period 2006-2010 really has to show for itself? It's bland and colorless compared to the preceding period.
I have good hopes though for 2011 and beyond. I mean, come on: Rift, TERA, Firefall, TOR, GW2, TSW, WoD.
There's a lot of potential in the next line up of MMORPG's helping to progress the MMO genre further again.
I think SW:TOR will be the last great and massive themepark based MMORPG, you can't have other big budget MMORPG's like that and justify it with potential profit in current-day MMO climate, it'd be hard to equal let alone top such budgets profitably (I'm talking about the 100-150million budget here).
So MMO companies have to be smarter about it to compete: I think we already see some of the features and mechanics that will be the theme for the years to come. Dynamic content is one of them, combat advancement outside of the trinity range is another, as we see in GW2, TERA or a Vindictus. Quest enhancement and deepening is I think another one with a lot of potential, like GW2 is doing with Dynamic Events and Personal Story and SW:TOR is doing with BW-style quest storytelling. Oh, and not to forget TSW with Dreamfall/The Longest Journey guy Tornquist on the helm, that already almost assures immersive quest storytelling in an already intriguing world setting.
Another few features that I foresee has a big future is sandbox type features and player generated content options - because you just can't keep up with coughing up the amount of dev provided content that big company supported games as WoW and SW:TOR will be able to muster. Like EVE Online does, or like you saw with SWG or a Neverwinter Nights from Bioware, you have to find ways to make players provide content and entertainment for eachother, and you have to do it in such a way that it smartly integrates dev provided, themepark-style content with player created action, gameplay and content. In sort of a yin-yang symbiosis.
Because even if the quality level of player provided stuff isn't for the most part at the same level as content provided by the devs and designers, it introduces an element of unpredictability and constant variation that you want your MMO world to have. Do it right, and you get an environment like EVE Online.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Well I guess in your eyes I am one of those trolls then. *shrug*
But then I'd have to ask one question: where have you been the last 6 months? I mean, it's not that "we evil trolls" have not brought many detailled arguments of what we have to critizise. But feeling generous today, I can make you a list which can help you use the search function:
- only near-humans playable and (presumably) no aliens
- space on rails and no open space
- previously crafting, the recently revelations have not *really* cleared things up entirely
- player cities, open housing vs instanced
- open pvp
- too much railroading through too much story
- no non-heroic things to do, overweight of the narrow heroic definition "replay Han Solo/Darth Vader"
- stiff animations (walking, combat)
- visual details of characters (faces, skins, hair, clothing)
- detail and lushness of the world with the so called "stylized realism"
- too much money spent on voice over, a feature prolly many MMO gamers don't care so much = wasted ressources which better had been used otherwise
- nothing about social activities: pazaak, gambling, entertaining asf.
- what about people who actually prefer to be "Uncle Owen"?
Thank me not.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Eikal its a polished wowclone with all your experience in MMO , you would know what direction that takes ?
- only near-humans playable and (presumably) no aliens
That is confirmed only playable humanoid classes , no aliens so far maybe in expansions
So no droids no robots whatever yes i love robots but i am not going to cry about it .
They are given to you as companion the alien races , if the companions will be playable controllable so far no .
- space on rails and no open space
Also confirmed its not going to be eve clone , and that space 3D is OPTIONAL (so people can even skip it )
and basing how badly people did at malygos in wow , i am glad it means bigger audience who will skip it .
maybe in time they will like it and marketing wise , they can slowly edge people into 3D controls , and make a full fledge space envoirement .
- previously crafting, the recently revelations have not *really* cleared things up entirely
Simple at same time complex crafting , new to this feature is that you can use your companions to grind for you .
So you just craft when the mats are there or bought . so no it wont be SWG complex crafting .
- player cities, open housing vs instanced
Wont happen , sorry your housing is your space craft , you can decorate it but again another SWG feature that will not be implemented , you got a starship thats your house at the same time . more then wow offers .
- open pvp
Same as WOW open pvp , nothing will change , so dont like it again same story .
Instanced Warzones thats made my mythic crew (so you know how good they are )
The rest i consider whines and minor details sorry , thats argueing .
It wont be a SWG , it will be a WOW with lightsabers , so people are dissapointed nothing SWTOR can do .

You gotta be kidding. This game has been advertised from the start as being NOT about Uncle Owen.
Give it a rest already, and be happy Owen finally got an action figure....

May haps I am easy to impress or my views are obscured, but I am confused. I keep seeing a lot of people causing all kinds of grief about this game. I haven't played in the beta (and I remember the fiasco that day was. I rofl'd at all the QQ posts), but unlike most posts I keep reading, I am steadily increasing in excitement with every new press release or leak.
Thats why I am asking, did I miss something? Or are people just causing problems? I technically could find something to get angry about (I was told you could tame Rancors in Star Wars Galaxies! Why not in this game! :O ), but the game looks good. Or maybe I am blinded by the glow of lightsabers and blasters (in which case, those bright lights will blind me soon! X_X ).

Well you can read into everything the devs say and praise the game without ever playing it. Some people will call you a fanboi.
Or you can read into everything the devs say and express your dislike of the game without ever playing it. Some people will call you a troll.
Just pick a side, there is no room for those without an opinion.
I'm very interested in this game, however some people have genuine concerns about it, most are just trolling. Honestly I'll never understand why you'd want to discuss something you're not interested in, and I could care less about their opinion. But they'll share it, for the 100th time, in this thread like they do the others. I honestly see this thread going no further then this, better off ignoring them and locking this thread imo.

It helped that I was a kid back when those toys first come out. I wish I had kept mine, rather than pulling the "I am too big for toys now, lets give them to the neighbor." That Blue Snaggletooth figure is worth a lot of money these days.
Aw well, other than him, and the original Luke/Leia, I have replaced all I had....and then some. Heck I even tried raising my daughters on Star Wars figures rather than dolls. That one didnt work out so well, but it gave me an excuse to buy em.
Nowadays my wife just accepts, that every once in a while, I will be bringing home an update to the collection.

I don't understand it either. Here you have an MMO with an amazing open world, really engaging group content, incredible open space combat, sandbox features... it has just everything an MMORPG should have... and still trolls complain. Well, that why they are trolls. Don't pay any attention to them.
Not to derail, but what sandbox features does Star Wars incorporate? I'm not trying to attack but merely wondering to possibly increase my curiousity of the game.
For instance you can change the color of your lightsaber.
Yep, you hit the spot right on with "amazing open world, really engaging group content" for SW:TOR. I don't know if open space combat is something every MMORPG should have, although it would be interesting to see space battles in WoW and LotrO.
Taken together, sounds to me that your ideal MMORPG is a sandbox MMORPG. Well, that story is old, SW:TOR ain't that and neither is it SWG Pre-CU like

A friend of mine was pretty honest about it, he said he passionately dislikes SW:TOR, that it stands for everything that is wrong with the MMORPG genre, and that he would keep trashing and trolling it until the day that it would be shut down.
So yeah, I have no trouble believing that there are people who vehemently dislike SW:TOR and are intent to keep hate campaigning and trolling on this - in their eyes - stain on the MMORPG genre, especially since some of them even on these forums have literally stated that they wanted/hoped SW:TOR will fail, so that MMO companies would direct their efforts towards making the sandbox type of MMORPG's that they like.
It doesn't mean that all posters posting criticism are like that, far from, but certainly some among them are like that.

and its their right to do so. because this may not be a "sandbox" game per se, but perhaps people hoped for a little more than a tunnel shooter, or perhaps they hoped they'd be able to open pvp instead of engaging in "capture the flag" instances.
While I can agree with some of your other comments, it's actually this kind of comments that adds unneeded to polarizing debates. Describing SW:TOR as being "little more than a tunner shooter" shows the attitude of the poster that engages in the forum debate, because everybody knows that the space part is nothing but a minigame and certainly not what SW:TOR is about. With such comments posters conveniently put SW:TOR away in a corner being nothing more than that, a space combat minigame, ignoring all the rest the game has to offer.
Regarding open pvp, they already stated it was ingame.
neither of these hypothetical "wants" is actually calling for a sandbox game, but its very easy for the opposite view to call them "omg swg vet sanboxer!" and as such attack their credibility without offering any proper argument. isn't it so?
I'm all for sensible debates where people post their concerns, likes and dislikes in a mature and intelligent way. But as long as there's namecalling happening and unreasonable, nonsensical arguments being spouted, you will have polarized debates and flame wars. A shame, true.
Well put read here. humble and intelligent hats off. I agree.
My concerns for TOR, i tend to keep private. Mostly anymore, anything written by myself or anyone else for that matter is a lie through their eyes. I think mostly its because not many have eyes as "green" as mine to these Newer games in development.. Will the real gamer developers please stand up...
My concerns are with the ability for a large 150+ pvp guild to flourish in such a setting as TOR is . "Fist of the Empire" was founded on the StarWars IP back when SWG came out, well a little before then but... whose counting.
After 8 years we still make the kiddies cry. But games are food for a multi-gaming guild, or they die, most do just that.
We are looking at a few games but TOR is StarWars so it is at the top of the list... right now.. but if they have nothing serious for pvp for more then just 8 then ya know whats that do for us or any other large guild.
So yea there is some concern.. i know others that post, get called trolls, ( such miss use of the words my generation created.. its comical..) or personally attacked, after the fanboi runs out of excuses and rebuttles. Searching, digging, fishing for information from anyone willing to take the bait; to give a different point of view from the one seen through their eyes, or add color to the stale Green, jaded look at things. Even to settle worries before they shell out the money for the title. You who make the money know what i speak of.. A buck saved is definitely a buck saved these days...

That's already the case with most of the people with no interest in the game on this forum. I'm pretty sure if the people that aren't going to play this game left, you'd see posts on information, coming from people that are interested, which is what we're doing now anyways. But that information is usually lost or forgotten, mostly ignored and the thread turns into this big argument about SWTOR not doing anything for the genre, which translates to not doing anything for them or how this isn't an MMO based on an uninformed opinion.

You got it all wrong OP (and most blind fanboys out there)
I was very pleased when they announced the TOR MMO...I never played SWG or whatever the name of the game is nor was I ever interested...Im not even hardcore SW fan
I did however enjoyed KOTOR a lot, afterall the game was developed by BW (well not the second one but nvm)
Now to the point...TOR was announced and I was like sweeet I love MMOs and I loved Kotor, win win for me...
Then I saw first screenshots and was like "oh pls dont try to copy wow succesful strategy, because it worked only once" ...fans on sites were like dont worry its not even alfa, dont worry the gfx sucks but it will be revolutionary in all the other aspects - I never believe that after that first screen shot...
Since then I was only getting let-downs and my worst fear that BW would be to lazy to create something original and just like any other lame studio tried to blindly copy what they thought was succesful about wow...
Now what Im trying to point out is that there are gamers that never played SWG and that DO care about TOR that post hateful comments because we are simply mad about a game that could be one of greatest games(it had all: budget, IP, elite devs, hype etc) of all time that turned out to be nothing more than a cartoonish piece of storycrap. You know its like marrying a women only to find out shes an alkoholic, gets fat after two years and cheats on you but cooks nicely...
TOR turned out to have only few features interesing enough to play it (and keep paying for)...what I feel here is hopeless anger because of an extremely missed opportunity in my eyes...
Fanboys just fail to see this fact, all they see is SW and BW and they get their pants wet...
The arrogance of developers, the blindness of fans, the hype of the game regardless of its looks is what makes me mad and what really make me to wish this game to fail even though I was really looking forward to it...It is really sad and I envy you guys your enthusiasm and passion for this game, you'll enjoy it thats for sure (the game aint complete crap,I'll definately admit that)
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
Now what Im trying to point out is that there are gamers that never played SWG and that DO care about TOR that post hateful comments because we are simply mad about a game that could be one of greatest games(it had all: budget, IP, elite devs, hype etc) of all time that turned out to be nothing more than a cartoonish piece of storycrap. I really pity you bro. What a sad story, does TOR know how you feel about it?
Going back to being blinded by the name BioWare.
Also, I recommend you seek counseling. Or think of a new comparison. :P
well everyone is entitled to their opinion, and his is just as valid as yours.. or mine.. all games will have some aspect that is liked or disliked by a particular type of player. .. Tor is obviously no different, despite everything though it is inevitable that the game will draw comparisons to SWG.. after all, its the only other MMO that is set in the starwars genre.. but given time opinions of the game can change, particularly as more information about the game is released, for some, it might change their opinion in a more positive manner.. for others, in a more negative way, neither is wrong, because personal opinion is just that 'personal' and despite his 'comparisons' being somewhat amusing, it is relevant.. and no doubt there are those who will agree with him.. or others like yourself who perhaps take offence at it.. so chill out.. whether the game succeeds or fails.. it doesnt matter.. the world will keep on spinning and women will continue to gain weight.. or not.. but you can always hide the beer and buy her a chastity belt... that probably won't affect her cooking

Hah, that guy will see playing TOR as adultery.
Yeah, I've criticized BioWare, and some of their employees, Lucas arts, Star Wars and even some of SWTOR, but I'm still excited as heck about trying this game. But that doesn't make me a fanboi.

Hah, that guy will see playing TOR as adultery.
Yeah, I've criticized BioWare, and some of their employees, Lucas arts, Star Wars and even some of SWTOR, but I'm still excited as heck about trying this game. But that doesn't make me a fanboi.
I don't care about Fanboy talk, doesn't bother me. He can sit there and call me a fanboy all day.
What I didn't like about his post was that he felt the need to ask for understanding while he continued to be blind to our take on the game. Sure BioWare, great company, but this is an MMO, gonna need far more then a name to make a successful MMO. I'll refuse to take him seriously, until he understands that not everybody is mesmerized by just the companies name. Far more then that has me intersted in this game.
The arrogance of developers, the blindness of fans, the hype of the game regardless of its looks is what makes me mad and what really make me to wish this game to fail even though I was really looking forward to it...It is really sad and I envy you guys your enthusiasm and passion for this game, you'll enjoy it thats for sure (the game aint complete crap,I'll definately admit that)
Now now, show me on the dolly where that dirty swtor touched you.

I note your observations, and your past preferences, and assuming you're being honest about your initial hopes, I can't for the life of me figure out how you've come to the conclusions that you have.
I don't recall WoW having a rail shooter, or having crafting done by subordinates. Or having cover based systems. Or positive/negative faction and consequences through role playing. Or your own vessel. Or a crew...
Yet your conclusion is moreless... "unimaginative WoW clone".
I don't see it that way at all. I see it as KotOR on steroids. If you liked KotOR I can't possibly imagine how you can hate the news regarding this game. I can see MMO fans being concerned, but KotOR fans? Seems to me they're aiming straight for you(us)!
For me, it's only the MMO player in me that's concerned. I played KotOR and LOVED it. Then after finishing it, I moved on. This is an MMO. I don't WANT to be finished with this game. And I'm not yet sure this is a game I'll want to keep subbed to for years and years.
If you rub the hype sand out of your eyes, things don't look that exciting for SWoTR actually. For one, it's been in development for a long time, and still has time to go. The game is going to look old (in comparison) right out of the gate at this point. It's unlikely they'll do an overhaul of the tech behind it any time soon, either because it can't be done, or because they simply don't want to (the overly simplistic art style is pretty obivously to keep specs down and go for a wide audience, specifically the WoW crowd, who have lower system specs on average).
Look aside, you also have the obscene amount of money being poured into this game. Lets say it pulls a Warhammer, and for one reason or another people bail after the first two to three months. The FIRST thing EA is going to do, is use this as an excuse to implement the microtransactions they've been wanting all along. This is assuming they don't just dump them on anyway on top of the subscription (likely). Either way, expect them to go F2P and further degrade the game to cover costs if things go south.
More importantly though, it just doesn't look like a good MMO. Bioware is great at making single player games, but they have no idea what they're doing with an MMO yet, and they're modeling themselves off the worst possible canidate (at least, if you don't want WoW in space). At best, we're going to see a co-op version of KoTOR which would be fine, if we weren't being milked for a monthly fee on it. Additionally, the look and feel of the game already elicit groans. Everything seems horribly overwrought, as though they're trying WAY too hard to push the "It's STAR WARS everybody! Look! Starrr warrrrrs". Right now I full expect to see Ewoks running around with double bladed lightsabers that have blasters attached to them while wearing boba fett helms availble from the Bioware store for a mere 500 Bioware points!
Yeah, the game is going to be polished as fuck, but a polished turd is still a polished turd. Things are really considerably less rosey when you look at it realistically, and honestly, I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed/pissed when the game actually hits.

Heh....SWG was an unpolished turd, and even it sold a ton of boxes. Not many stayed....but there ya go.
For its timeframe, SWG cost a ton of money. They were even running a pay to beta scheme.....folks actually had to pay for beta discs. TOR is going to blast SWG's heyday numbers out of the water....even in proportion to having more gamers in todays market. This despite the fact SWG went with realistic graphics.
The graphics wont be what makes/breaks this game as evidenced by WoW. You want a MMO to run on lower end PCs.
You say it wont be a good MMO....you know this for sure do you? The crafting mechanics alone are creating a buzz as something fresh to the genre.
I say TOR is the number 2 P2P MMO, in NA subs, the month after launch(when folks are required to sub). This is just on the single player content alone, as games just do not launch with the amount of content this game will have. That will keep folks tied in 3 to 6 months.
ANY type of decent MMO play will keep folks tied in even longer.
I would imagine it sucks to be a hater, and even worse if you are on the sandbox bandwagon. This game will not only turn a profit, but if it does well enough, you can expect to see it cloned in future games.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

For someone that enjoys games like Heroes of the Three Kingdoms(the MMO I doubt you ever played the strategy game) I'm not surprised at all that you would be attracted to this game. Honestly, what game don't you like? It doesn't seem you have any standards.
I love everything I see or new is being released about the game. I may be a fanboy, but I always loved Bioware games because of the RP feel, great story and rich content. I see TOR not being too much different and am happy about it. I can already play "8 different games" in TOR even if I just want some SW experience. But along with that I get all kinds of stuff additionally - space combat (who cares if its on rails - its heroic :P), crafting, companions like in other Bioware games most of which I loved, space ship, dozens of planets to visit, group quests, epic arcs, and if I get totally bored - PvP Warzones. Even if TOR had just these few elements that I listed I'd be already happy to play it. Bioware rocks! And with IP like Star Wars on the table - this is gonna be a ride to remember.

Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release].
What about people that wanna be Uncle Owen?
You gotta be kidding. This game has been advertised from the start as being NOT about Uncle Owen.
Give it a rest already, and be happy Owen finally got an action figure....

Well you can read into everything the devs say and praise the game without ever playing it. Some people will call you a fanboi.
Or you can read into everything the devs say and express your dislike of the game without ever playing it. Some people will call you a troll.
Just pick a side, there is no room for those without an opinion.
because then the site would be made up of people saying the same stuff over and over.
WOW, you're good. I think you are right LOL.

LOL. I love it! That is just golden...
Aw shucks.

FoE Fist of the Empire
That's already the case with most of the people with no interest in the game on this forum. I'm pretty sure if the people that aren't going to play this game left, you'd see posts on information, coming from people that are interested, which is what we're doing now anyways. But that information is usually lost or forgotten, mostly ignored and the thread turns into this big argument about SWTOR not doing anything for the genre, which translates to not doing anything for them or how this isn't an MMO based on an uninformed opinion.
This post pretty much says it all.
Bravo.

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
well everyone is entitled to their opinion, and his is just as valid as yours.. or mine.. all games will have some aspect that is liked or disliked by a particular type of player.
I didn't take offense to it. I laughed actually.
Sorry, I can't see a resemblance between TOR being unappealing and a failing marriage.
