Measuring a computer screen

HyoukanHyoukan Member Posts: 307

I was wondering, how are computer screens measured, at the moment I have a oooooooooooold Compaw FS740, when I measure the actual screen across I get 13", but when I do a search on yahoo for the monitor it says it's a 17" monitor. Anyway that I measure it I dont get 17", if I measure from the corner to corner diagonally (not on the actual screen) I get 21".

Any insight? Thanks.

Its where the acutally glass screen is, left to right..

    Normally a 17' is like 16' viewable..

    I doubt its a 17 with a 13 viewable, thats horribly bulky.

Yeah, thought so, I'm about to shop around for a new comp and trying to figure out how much of a better monitor I'd get. I'm probably gonna go to a 17" or 20.1" LCD. Hard to immagine a monitor being 5 inches bigger than my current.

This monitor is VERY bulky. 16.1 inches across, about 12.9 is actually the screen. More than 1.5 inch border on the sides, it's heavy as hell too.

Always add on an inch when you are calculating monitor size.

Did you measure it diagonally across the screen?
    That's how they determine size.

Kintak is right. The correct way to determine monitor view size (usually advertized as "Viewable" size) is diagonal. IE Lower left corner of the glass/display, to upper right of the display.

You only measure the viewable area, also.

OMG U DONT MEASURE THE OUTSIDES ITS CALLED A 17" monitor but its a 21" frame ??? so you dont feel jipped off if they say you get a 21" monitor  but the view is only 17"image

They don't decieve you at all. They do tell you it is a 21' monitor. They don't say the actual screen is 21'.
