Looking for personal opinions on magic systems

I absolutely love a mage class.  Pretty much any mage class.  I've played PW:I, WoW, LOTRO, Flyff (lol), Ryzom, and countless other mmo's with magic.  Sure, stabbing things is fun, and so is making them look like pin cushions with your arrows, but flinging the power of the world around you itself is where it's at.

 

So, here's my request to help me find a new game:  Which MMO, preferably F2P, but not necessary, had the best magic system you've ever come across and why was it the best?  I want a game where being a powerful mage actually means something, and that it takes some time and effort to get there.

    Take a look at Ryzom, I recently started playing and have been training the magic skills. It is quite nice you gain certain titles such as "Destroyer" or " Mage of life" depending on what magic you choose to train, the nukes are huge and have the largest alpha strike of anything in the game. You can even Combine 2 spells into 1 so that you double cast for really rediculous damage, usually simply 1 shotting anything your level.

     

    Be warned though often the power of such spells will wound your own character simply from channeling them!
