Games similar to the Fallout series?

lilreap2k3lilreap2k3 Member UncommonPosts: 353

I have been a huge fan of the Fallout series ever since playing the first way back in the day. I recently beat Fallout 3, and am working on New Vegas. I was just wondering if there are any other games with a similar playstyle to the Fallout series. I love having mod options that change the game dramatically, and I absolutely love the casino mini-game in New Vegas. As they say... "the little things". I played Oblivion for about twenty minutes at a friend's house years ago, but never really got into it. I may go back and give it a shot. In the meantime, do you guys have any other suggestions?

Playing - Minecraft, 7 Days To Die, Darkfall:ROA, Path of Exile

Morrowind and Oblivion play almost exactly the same as Fallout series, except that it is fantasy world instead of post-apocolyptic.

Fallen Earth. You can even gamble in it as well (slot machines etc).

The only MMO that really strikes me as a Falloutish type game would be FE. I think they even have slot machines and other gambling mini-games in their game.

It seems the closest to what you are looking for.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. Just wanted to add that I am not really looking for an mmorpg, but I have played Fallen Earth a bit. I liked it for the most part, but the combat seemed really clunky even after months of patches.

So Morrowind and Oblivion so far. I don't mind trying a few fantasy games like that, but are there any that are more like Fallout? Not necessarily post-apoc, but maybe steam punk or realistic even? I also tried the X3 series, but found it more confusing than EVE.

Also while we are at it, I could also use a few suggestions for something similar to the Master of Orion series. I absolutely loved MoO2, but the game itself was too short.

Not a sandbox but borderlands is a first person shooter with rpg like levels, choose a class (player), talent tree and many types of weapons with different stats, effects and level requirements.

At least it's kinda post apocalypt from the world your in.

Have you tried Red Dead Redemption? Open world, tons of mini-games, random events. There is a main quest line but also side quests, and stranger quests. A great game really.

If you are looking for open world rpgs:

    Oblivion

    Morrowind

Gothic series and Risen (although they play less like Fallout than the 2 above)

Two Worlds 2 (has gambling and stuff but not out in US yet I think)

For post-apocalyptic I'd recommend the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series they are somewhat open world-ish but more of an FPS and less of an RPG, still amazing tho.

Take a look around GOG.com. They have a lot of old games that have been adapted to run on Windows systems, all DRM-free, all for under $10. Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is available there- a really fun Steampunk game that plays a lot like Fallout 1 and 2, both of which the site has as well. There are also a bunch of strategy games there, including Master of Orion 1-3, Master of Magic (my favorite turn-based strategy game ever), and more.

As far as modern steampunk/post apocalyptic rpgs, though, it's pretty much Fallout or nothing. Enslaved is technically post-apocalyptic, though it's fairly short, part platformer, linear as heck, and more of an action game than an rpg; all that said, though, it's well-made and fun if you don't mind throwing $60 + tax at short-term entertainment.

Fallout 1 and 2, or Fallout Tactics, or Fallout TES? Big difference between the three.

Other than Oblivion, maybe give Vampire: The Masquerade (plays pretty much exactly like elder scrolls/fallout3) and Gothic 3 a try, both were completely off my radar until fairly recently and are still worthwhile.

Vampire is a little more streamlined when compared to open world games now but it still has a lot of interesting and unique things to explore.

Gothic 3's strong point is it's freedom, much like the Elder Scrolls games you can branch off and head anywhere right from the start and make your character to be anything you want (also different faction choices to fight for or aggainst), doesn't really have any real direction as to where you go or what to do, so how the game plays out is up to you. Maybe not the best of the series but it's the newest until the next one releases (which is soon I believe).

I[object Window]m going to second this. Arcanum was an excellent game that didn[object Window]t really get as much publicity. But I believe it[object Window]ll work well for you.

For a game like X3 try Freelancer. Its older, but, deep, fun and not complicated. As to Master of Orion 2 Good Old Games, GOG.com has games on sale all the time. You may find one you like there... Great luck in your search!
