I am looking to try out eve again. I've technically had a character for over 3 years but I never did much other than mission running/training skills. I never really found something that would keep me playing the game, but at the same time I feel like the only thing I've done is mission run. I get this feeling that there is something for me to do in Eve I just don't know what it is and that' why I am posting, and why I have kept a char around on and off for so long.
I've played a lot of MMOs I usually orientate myself towards support roles but I think the big thing that has prevented me from really getting into Eve like any other MMO is I would need to do something that gets me interacting with other people in the world, just from a gameplay means.
This is how I usually find any clan or guild in any MMO, I don't blind apply or join any clan without interacting in some way before hand. Playing standard MMOs I would usually find people who thought I was a good healer/tank or w/e and they would tell me to apply. In Darkfall a clan moved into this island I lived at and they decided that I would fit in with them.
This post has changed a bit from when I first made it, I was going to list a bunch of stuff about what I like to do in MMOs and what things in eve sound interesting, but really I guess my question should just be,
Is there any profession or w/e in eve where the game mechanics will get you interacting with other people.
Now I know almost everything involves interaction with people, but I'm talking before you join that clan.

"is there a profession that gets you interacting with other people"?
well, let's see. All of them, except mission running. If you play the market, you will need price checks or alts...or..wait for it....friends. Mining you need haulers, security. Capital ship moving, you need scouts, cyno poppers. Wormhole exploration, you need to be able scan and make bookmarks. POS ops requires mulitiple people on multiple timezones generally.
As far a Corp functions..i would say once you have found a group of guys/gals that you are comfortable with..try recruiting. I never spoke to more peeps in game ever, than doing that. Ofc recruiting can drive you crazy too. Like Cosy said, there is nothing in EvE that isn't better with friends. I can do a ton of things solo. Like research/production. I can mine solo. I can do alot solo, but is it fun?
Roles that you are looking for will develop once you are in a group where THEY trust you enough to do them. I have played healers/tanks in the past as well. Not everyone wants to be a DPS machine, so you are not alone there. Several ships cater to this, mainly logistics, command and capital ships. Forget Caps, but the first two shine when you are in a group.
Tech3 ships provide a whole new experience. There is plenty to do..spend some time with a few different groups. If you don't like or don't fit in with one group, better to move on after a week or two than let it ruin your EvE experience.
You are solely in charge of whether your experience is good or bad in EvE. With hi-sec, no insurance payouts for suicide bombing, easy to use map tools...everything you need is at your grasp.
Good luck.

EVE doesn't really work in the same way as your usual clan/guild structure in that there are less chances for simply 'grouping' with guilds before joining them. Most corps act in the same way as invite only pvp guilds do in other games, i.e. they wont run with someone who isn't 'one of their own' and as such you really need to be applying to guilds as opposed to hoping they start calling for you.
That being said one way to push on the latter option is simply to make a name for yourself by getting involved in the overall factional war (and hopefully some fleet battles along the way) or as a pirate.
Or alternatively wait for the next update (Incursion), with it's offering of public fleet action you should be able to 'get to know' other corps as you group with them through the incursion dynamic. If you set yourself up for specific fleet roles like Ewar/tackling then you should actively be grouped up and thus be able to make up your own mind about who would be the best fit for you in terms of corp.
Personally I've always found there are numerous options in EVE, regardless of whether you are in a large corp or are a solo flyer. Whichever approach you take will lead you into interaction with others.

The new incursion system seems like it will encourage people to group up with strangers more. The problem with grouping with random people in Eve is that there is always an asshat lurking around every corner ready to pop your pod and steal your loot. This makes people in Eve very cautious about who they interact with and how. If you are in an NPC corp now the corp chat channel is usually pretty lively. Also you can post on the forums in the recruitment section about what you are looking for in a corp. Joining the right corp is the key to surviving in Eve.
I am a support personality when it comes to MMOs.
I like to be part of a group and I like achieving goals as a team. In WoW this led me to being a raid leader and bringing the guild to being one of the top on our server.
In EVE I started out as a salvager. I was a dedicated salvager. I joined a 0.0 corp and every time I logged in everyone wanted to me to join up with them. I'd salvage the sites and sell the stuff then split the proceeds 50/50.
Because of this, I slowly built up some market skills and started 'working' the market. From there I started learning logistics skills - I am now a 'perfect' (all 5s in every skill for my ship) scimitar pilot. So when there's an escalation - I'm the go to guy. People who are just running sites love having me around 'cause I find salvaging interesting.
I find the after-salvage part of selling the items interesting.
I did train up a maurader on an alt account so I can do it myself if no one is online but whenever I was on when I was playing regularly people always wanted to fleet up. It was a lot of fun and entertaining. I got to experience a lot of stuff in my first months of playing that some never experience.
Unfortunately, I'm working an awful lot of late so I don't get to play much of anything but EVE is perfect since I just keep my accounts (all two of them) active and going strong. Eventually, I'll have the time again to play and be able to fly a perfect recon ship.
I agree with all the peeps saying you need to find friends. The game simply comes alive when you have a vibrant group to hang with.
doing it solo gets old and boring fast..... something other mmo's try and satisfy, but not EVE. If you're a solo guy you'll STAY a solo guy...and quit after a month or 2 i suspect.
find some friends.......begin the journey pilot.
This is the best advice here, any corp worth its salt wont just let you in either you need to have something to offer in return and that comes in the form of team work and a willingness to take part in corp/alliance activities.
Be wary of any corp that just lets you in if they are strangers because that presents all kinds of potential problems, they are either a scrub corp that is desperate for members or somebodies pet and need taxes to pay their rent and when it comes to empire corps it means a lack of security and that can cost you more than realise and it means you could end up being ganked by an infiltrator looking for easy ISK by killing something shiny or even just for amusing themselves by attacking a corp mission runner or mining op.
Best thing to do is decide what you want to do first, if its pvp you need to discover what form of pvp you enjoy most and that is pretty much trail and error, try some piracy or small gang roaming as well as alliance fleet pvp and when you know which you like best do that.
Your options will be a bit limited at first as decent pvp corps will want killboard references and be able to see some experience so to avoid getting involved with scrub corps try some FW like bunnyhopper suggests. Factional warfare is a nice easy introduction to small/medium gang pvp and when you get a little more confident you can try some solo roaming and lowsec pvp is generally less laggy and more fun than alliance blobfests.
Sitting and waiting for grid to load and staring at a black screen for 10 mins only to have the pleasure of shooting at a stationary structure for an hour will put you off pvp so try something else first.
Currently playing:

I had the same conundrum about a year after playing eve off and on.
I came to the conclusion that if i didnt do something drastic, then I might never play again. Meaning I had nothing to lose!.. So I dived in and joined a friend in a 0.0 corp.
I think thats when I became a beleiver.
Yeah, it wasn't until my third try that EvE clicked for me. Now that I'm in null sec I can't believe just how awesome this game is becoming. There's literally no limit. My only regret is not getting it the first time around.....all that training time..../sniff. =P
There are corps out there that are newb friendly. The community in general are awesome with a few exceptions. If you're looking for an awesome corp, might I suggest Gun Metal Hit Squad (HITU). Great mix of veterans, newbs and everything in between. Awesome learning ground!
Whats striking about deep 0.0 is how dependent you are on others. There is literally nothing there, only what you and your colleagues make (or transport from highsec)
Money almost becomes meaningless. Your ships are built, your ammo your modules, the dead are liquified and fed introvenously into the living.
Ships and modules which previously had no meanining suddenly become a matter of survival or defeat.
I don't agree with this. I think you can have fun and enjoy the game playing single, too!
Keep on rockin'!
OK there is probably a place for you, the biggest problem is getting in.
You need to learn how to make friends and network. I've been happily in the same corp for 5 years now with no plans of leaving but if I needed to I could get in to another 3 or 4 corps within a day.... that's rather poor but I don't play as much as I used to. Don't just consider your friends or people you work with and help as potential allies, make sure your enemies know your name and enjoy fighting you and they may enjoy fighting with you one day. Optimally you should be able to make friends anywhere you are.
However there are some places that can help. Get in a a corp like this and use that as a stepping stone.
Red bs Blue - non stop consensual war between two corps, not sure how it's going lately but could be fun.
Eve Uni - They have some courses on fleets and such which a mission runner might want.
factional warfare - FW is somewhat buggy and really needs some work but you can do some pvp and meet ppl in there.
