Anarchy Online: Item Store Added

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In a new dev post on the official Anarchy Online forums, updated information about last Friday's addition of an item store has been released. Included in the store are social and convenience items that will allow players to remain competitive. Devs are quite adamant that these items are not 'power' items and are not required to play the game.

Tokens:

Token packs will be available from the shop in different amounts. This is an item that has been long requested by the community as it represents a very significant time investment to most players. The end-game boards themselves will not be available and will still need to be obtained in the normal fashion.

Victory Points:

A great many people enjoy PvP, while at the same time a great many people do not. Points will be available in the shop for those who would rather avoid the experience altogether. At the same time Basic OFAB armor pieces (not upgraded) will become Yes-Drop so can be sold by players with large surplus amounts of VP.

XP Stims:

Experience Constructs will be available in the shop for those who want to progress quicker and enjoy the game at their own pace. This is another item that has been long requested by the community. The best benefit available from the store will top out at 20% for 4 hours. These will not stack with previously available Anniversary buffs.

There is a full list of items the dev team feels will generate the most discussion along with a list of items that will be coming to the store in the future.

Read more here.

The official forum is feeling the heat out of this, the majority of the posters are negative.

FunCom also made it a breach of the EULA/Forum rules to post when you quit the game, or post pictures of canceled accounts. Funny they would do that prior to this huh.

I thought they had buyable vehicles for years already if I remember right. Those flying ones and the hoverboard things.

They've had a 'cash shop' since 2007.  The vast majority of the items are purely social and the new stuff added like buying levels, VP, and tokens does nothing to advantage someone using the items shop over someone not using it. Now you will simply get the choice of leveling by paying credit sellers who will kite your char up, which has been going on since 2003, or pay Funcom direct.  I doubt more that 20% of the players will ever use the item shop, though, as the fun in the game is the journey for most of the players and few playing the game are wealthy enough to make much use of the items shop.

I wonder how long it will be until developers finally realize that cash shops hurt much more in the longterm than they help in short term profit. It's no secret that there are a good amount of gamers that simply despise the concept and will bail if and when an item mall is added.

I would rather pay the Funcom company that run AO then any other cash shop most people who are complaining about it on the official forums are going to use it no matter what. people subscribe and unsubscribe theyre AO account all the time i know i do. if this helps push out the little amount left that Funcom can give AO i guess i'll see it till the game ends :) and that i dont mind

I Played Ao for years and I could think of going back just for the tokens and Stims. Any AO players knows how boring is token farming, it takes AGES.  IMO, those addiction on the shop are just great they wont break the game.

Interesting that you don't consider "leveling by playing the game" to be a valid option.

if they bothered to update the game i might comeback..

played actively for 7 years, and ran a omni-organisation.

but they failed to deliver what was promised, so i canceled all 4 accounts i had,

    on a monthly subscription.

    Longterm? For Anarchy Online? lol

This game screams "graphical update and relaunch"..

Or they can scrap and rebuild a part 2 (dunno about this really since we are now in the WoW era.. Don't need any other failed clones based on good I.P.'s)

Cash shop? ehhh.. could have been a little further down on the list, but money is money I suppose.

What happened to the graphic/engine update that they promised... like... Ages ago?

  • StofftierStofftier Member Posts: 93

The engine update is due in Q1 2011, because they are supporting both the DX7 client (current) and the new DX9 Client (Dreamworld Upgrade)  that is coming.

The old engine that was showcased a couple of years ago was scrapped due to it not being inhouse, and they already had a tech team on the Dreamworld engine, so they did it all over again. Went a little faster second time around I guess.

AO gets no money from me until the new engine goes live. Then I will be back in full force.

Why is this even an issue? AO was one of the first mainstream western MMOGs to have a cash shop. It's had items you could buy for points for years now (points you buy for real life cash either directly or via your subscription stipend). People just love to complain and jump on the hate-wagon the second anything even vaguely "bad" happens whether it's a legitimate complaint or not, which it really isn't in a case like this.

I have only one problem with cash shops and that is when the items in them cannot be EARNED by playing the game also.  It annoys me already PAYING to play the game and seeing someone else with even deeper pockets running around with something I would like to have too.  However I utterly refuse to pay TWICE for a game and the constant annoyance in game makes me take my wallet elsewhere.  If all MMO's are going to head this way, as it would appear, then I think its time to return to a gaming platform other than MMO.

it sounds positive to me, i dont really pvp much, not to many people around in the hours i play so buying VP sounds great, im more neutrally based so tokens dosnt really effect me, but saying that i do have a couple of sided toons, missions can be great money makers, especially at higher levels, but i can see the problem with grinding missions for tokens. XP stims im kinda touchy on, i guess that means that NTs will make there cash up to 20% faster. i like this cash shop because it dosnt do anything really big, so people will level faster, AO went very endgame with Xan anyway.

Atleast prices aren't anywhere near cheap for most of stuff. It's quite a premium priced... Still not game breaking...
