    Ups:
    -No monthly fees
    -Awesome Graphics
-No lag(if you have a good internet connection and/or a good graphic card)
    -Great PvP format

    Downs:
-You level on your own unless you're in a party (there won't be people in your map not like other mmorpgs)
-20 Levels (but it is hard to level)
-Guilds don't actually go on wars (probably'll be implemented soon, by guild wars they meant the human guild vs. the other guild like the Charrs and the Stone Elementals)

    In-between:
-Different districts in cities and towns (like different zones and stuff, not all the people will be in one zone although this method reduces lag)

I have Guild Wars and I find the game pretty amazing for a free online play game. Its worth the money. image

    x[..The end will make a new beginning..]x

Having 20 levels isn't a down side. It just backs up the fact that the creators wanted to game to reward you for skill, not time played. So having a low level cap would fit that description.

Also, I'm pretty sure there are guild battles/wars.

    Actually there are Guild Wars.
You can initiate Guild vs Guild battle from your Guild Hall, depending on how high the (randomly chosen or personally-challenged) Guild is ranked compared to yours, you'll either be playing a defensive war in your own Guild Hall, or laying siege to theirs.
There are about 8 different Guild Halls too, each with specific strategic elements (the small bridges in the Hall of the Dead, or teleports in one of the new Halls and walls you can close with switches in the Frozen Isle, for example)

The name Guild Wars could also have been ment as a reference to the Lore (which you can find under Game Info at guildwars.com)
It's basically a hint at the backstory of the game (which is explained in further detail in one of the manuals you get with the game: one manual is the usual what-the-game-plays-like, another is a 77 page book of lore - which explains what events occured prior to the start of the game)

The game really starts to shine at level 20, personally I don't feel a low levelcap is a downside of the game, it adds to the fairness of PvP.
As for being on your own unless you're in a party, once you get out of pre-searing ascalon (the beginners area so to speak) you'll likely be spending all of your time in parties (be it with players or computer-controlled henchmen).

Finally some people who are willing to explain something instead of just hyping for no good reason. Atleus you said, great PVP format, can you be more specific? As far as I know it's still point and click, that doesn't sound all to exciting nor that different. So where does the skill come in? I heard it's a lot about configuring the skills but I still don't see how that can be so thrilling if it's point, click and watch the combat. Does one get additional skill points after lvl20? Heard attributes stop there but what about the skill points? Lastly can you (or anyone really) name some games the combat system is comparable to? Baldurs Gate perhaps? Diablo? Anarchy Online? Thanks.::::08::

I don't really know any games the combat-system is comparable to, at first it seems a bit like any MMORPG out there (point & click, use skills occasionally).
Then you find out that you can manually dodge ranged attacks and that you can in fact use warriors as real tanks (to block off chokepoints, collision detection is featured ;p)
And the more twitch-based skills come into play as well, such as Disrupting Chop which disrupts enemy attacks (you have to have some good timing to get these disrupts in, which makes an interruption-based Warrior or Mesmer a very tough class to play)

Then there's the loads of skills you have - and only 8 slots to fill them with, there's also countless of combinations of skills that are really effective in succession.
(e.g.: A warrior has many skills that cause Deep Wounds, whereas Necromancers would have skills that deal more damage when the enemy has a Deep Wound, then by casting their hex on the enemy, they open the way for a Mesmer to unleash one of her skills - which deals more damage if an hex is cast upon an enemy)

There's loads of possibilities for tactics and teamwork, while individual skill (being able to dodge ranged attacks and knowing when to step back (for example when Eruption is cast near you)) still matters.

Yes you point and click - and yes you use skills like almost any other RPG.
It mixes that in with a bit of twitch and a load of teamplay/strategy.
The part that makes it thrilling is the teamplay bit - you have to work together really well for some of the missions as well as PvP against good teams/Guilds.

As for skillpoints, you still get them after level 20 (as well as Attribute Refunds I believe).
The experience bar will still be there and it'll still level you, but you wont notice anything of it other than that skill point and some extra Attribute Refunds.
(note: you can completely customize the interface, so you can easily leave out the experience bar if you don't like it... )

Thx, along with Polar's and your other post I've got a pretty good idea now of what it's like. Sounds fun to me but it gets mentioned too little. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's got the wrong idea, since all one hears is 'it takes skill', while up until now noone took the time to explain in what terms it does. Especially when you got some people saying 'one has no control over one's characters' one ends up totally confused.

The main reason i wanna hold off on guild wars is because lvl 20 is an insanily low lvl cap,why is it oly 20 and is it going to be raised???

  • honestyhonesty Member Posts: 11

Like people are saying, its because you will be rewarded by your skill not how many hours you've played.

Also limits to gap from low lvl characters to high lvl characters for less restricted parties etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention one thing.
You can control your character by keyboard as well, very reminiscent of FPS controls (WASD to move, has X to instantly turn, several buttons to target hostiles, space to attack - ofcourse all these keys can be rebinded as you please - personally I prefer walking with mouse and doing everything else (including dodging) with keyboard)

As for the low level cap:
The game basically starts once you hit level 20: more quests will open up to you - partially because, you're able to survive in far more exploration zones and you'll be a viable member for PvP and GvG parties.
The low level cap also ensures that casual gamers can go head-to-head with hardcore 24/7 players.

  • PaulOttPaulOtt Member Posts: 57

Yes, the cap is 20 and will likely be 20 in future expansions too. Realize though, the skills are not tied to your level. You won't have all the skills at 20, although you should have enough to compete in PvP if you want. There are still lots of quests and missions to do, and more skills to collect. In fact, the best skills you have to 'capture' from enemy bosses, which can be fun for people who like to do that kind of thing.

Me, I'd prefer to already have them all and spend all my time in PvP. image

    Read this Amarao

The makers of this game have said, Its the skills you use and how you use them that matters, not the level you are at.

For example :- Two 20 lvl players with the same choice professions, 1 of them may totally out class the other player, simply because of the differnt choice of skills used or the way he/she has allocated the points to each skill class

I have a lvl 12 ranger/monk, and have adjusted alot of my skill points to healing prayers and expertise, this now means that the cost of my skills cost less and i can also heal for 70hp,

Far more than a player in our guild that has a monk as his first choice profession who has not used his skill points well enough to able him to match my healing abilites.

read this also on the first page of the posts headed

What happens at lvl 20 cap

Are there more than 5 spells for each class? Cause they only list 5 and I'm pretty sure that's not all!

6 Professions (classes), roughly 75 skills per profession, and you pick 2 professions for your character.
