However to build friendships it is prolly harder then ever.
You will easily twink yourself. You will encounters more twinks then ever. But this uberness is not helping at all to build friendship, in fact, it deter it.

This horse was sent out to pasture long ago, I would not recommend starting from scratch to anyone at this point. everquest is my favorite game of all time, but the magic is gone. I hoped everquest 2 could recapture it but that was a mistake, the games couldn't of been more different. Now all my hopes are on Vanguard.

I'd say its probably hard because they're no new players to play with. Its all high end now everyone being lvl 70. Unless you start the game with a couple of friends and group with those friends continusly. Other than that I'd say its probably hard to start the game by yourself. Unless you make a druid or ranger or necro and don't mind soloing.
I came back recently and I started a new toon (I still had a higher level old toon). It is both easy and hard. It is harder for certain level ranges and you will have to solo for a bit. However, higher level toons are always starting new toons and when you see someone say L20-21 group LFM and you level 60 toon hasn't gotten a group for a while, you just log an alt and play. The only thing that you should NOT do is play in old world zones exclusively, because many of those are dead. Go to Pok and find out where the action is for your level or where you can solo if you need to. Otherwise, this game is alive and well, and I am still enjoying myself and having a blast even so I am equipped with Luclin era gear...
If you should pick EQ1, another good solo class and good starting class, is the beastlord. 90 percent of everyone that picks that class goes for the vah shir race for whatever reason.
Druids are a good solo class but are so nerfed up right now past 65 I find it hard to reccomend them and I played one as my main for 2 years. They are a fun class to play however, up to about 50 then it gets hard.
Necros are nothing short of awesome soloers. Necros can solo better than Druids at high levels, and can solo indoors easily things that are hard or impossible for druids to solo.
Rangers get the utility spells druids have , but get them later than druids. the movement, flying that kind of stuff. But they dont deal their damage with spells, course.
Clerics are hard to get going, and about all they do is heal but if you can get one to 40 you should have lots of groups everybody wants clerics
I recently took this up again. I am essentially starting from scratch as my highest level character is now only 18.
The old world zones are dead as a doornail. Last weekend I was out killing stuff in the front yard of Quenyos. I hadn't seen a soul there all day (and it was on a Saturday). A naked barbarian runs up to me and starts talking in a languae I don't understand. I was so happy to see a live human that I stopped what I was doing and attempted to talk to him. He just sort of stood there and looked at me for a while, occasionally opening up the trade window (I suppose he was looking for a donation). Finally I gave up and went back to grinding.
On the plus side, the first few levels seem to have been made a ton easier. I'm levelling at about twice the speed that I remember from back in the day. I also love that spells have been spread out. I'm happy every time I gain a level instead of every four levels. Being able to start up a hybrid and actually have some goofy spells to play around with at low levels is also great.
There is a new task system in place that is suppossed to help things when you hit five, but so far I'm not seeing that it gives a whole lot more reward than just standing in one spot slaying as fast as you can. I also saw in patch notes that quest that start in cities give more XP now (they mostly weren't worth the time when I used to play), but the first random quest I tried seems to be broken currently (it's either broken or quite poorly written). Even the comments at Alakad consist mostly of peaple stuck at the same place I am, with no responses. This does not inspire confidence, I doubt I'll try many more random quests.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
That was a good post you made. Maybe to late but glad you wrote it, heh. It verifies what I read on the sony site that they were spaceing out the spells more instead of getting them every 4 levels or so. I didn't know they had changed the speed at which you leveled, but clearly maybe they did since you noticed that.
That stinks that guy you met couldn't understand you. I bet he had played games before or he wouldn't have been trying trade/beg but not eq or he would have used "tell" to ask for something.
I read where someone got to level 39 in eq just off quests heres the rpg article..
That article is the 3rd in the serias. You have to click the link on it to see the first and second article. I don't think that would be a fun way to level all the way to 40 but, maybe a quest or two would be ok. Hacking is more fun, but to each their own, its interesting to see someone do it.
O at level 18 Paladual Caverns (PC) xp is better than Qeynos but .. well I like Qeynos and Black burrow also so whatever.
I'm gonna have to go with easy. Don't get this game unless you have a bunch of time on your hands, cause most likely you will be soloing till 20 and most of the people are 60+. I don't find the end game very fun because it's basically just raiding, very hard soloing, and uber gear is required. You usually have to join a "hardcore" guild to be able to have fun raiding and their expectations are big. If you really want to, go ahead. A lot of uber players are glad to help out new players and when I returned and created a new character(untwinked) I had recieved 500 platinum within the first hour from just fighting in Freeport, an uber cleric had sent me a tell and helped re introduce the game to me.

Or it may be that it was a character played by a 4 year old. It took me a while to get through to my preschoolers that they should only bug each other and not bug strangers while they were messing around in EQ, back in the day. (They've since gotten old enough to read and actually play a bit.)
ANYWAY... It's definitely worth looking into where the current "hot spot" zones are, or so it was the last time I started a new character.

No, it's probably much harder now for a number of reasons.
1. One of the fundamental problems with EQ is that the gameplay is extremely shallow especially at low levels. New players quickly find themselves asking "is there any purpose to this game besides killing rats and snakes just to level up, so I can then kill orcs, and level up...." There is really nothing that gives players a purpose. The quest system is such that you have to run around hailing NPCs and hoping that you stumble across a quest. SoE should really have borrowed from WoW's quest system where if an NPC has a quest available for you, there is a mark above the NPCs head or something else that draws the attention of the player.
2. High level players do play alts, but many of them power level. That basically means that there is no incentive for a high level player's twinked out alt to group with you. Why should they share XP with a new player when they can kill just fine by themselves? Like previously mentioned, the low level gameplay in Everquest involves little besides killing mobs and leveling. The faster you can get past that part of the game, the better.
3. Huge time-sinks when you reach L70. Now that you, the new player, have reached level 70 you get to deal with the grind of alternate experience. Thats right. Just when you thought "wow, I'm finally done sitting on my ass killing mobs over and over just so I can level" you find out that you can now gain skills and abilities ....... but ONLY by killing mobs over and over and over and over.
