Whats the deal with game company's calling any game they produce an MMO....
Bear with me, the game im about too use as an example, i play Everyday, for atleast 2 hours a day... i get great enjoyment out of World Of Tanks..
but world of tanks is in NO WAY a MMO...there is not a persistant world, there is no way i can drive around, checking the world out in my tank... So why call it an MMO... in all reality and technicality is a First Person Shooter... Just with tanks instead of a guy holding a gun, Oh but you level!! and can get new tanks!!
So by how they use the Term MMO, we could call Counter Strike a MMO, or Battle Field Bad Company 2 a MMO... You level, you get new gear, you select certain options too make your guy fit your play style... NO Damnit... NO..
That is not a MMO... a MMO in my mind is a persistant world, where folks can explore and adventure with people over a WORLD.. not 20v20 battles on a randomly selected map...
end of rant
Begin your flames..
*side note* i guess this falls under the same catagory as "sand-box" And the term "Hard-Core gamer". They're used in the wrong way, and thrown around way too much.. to the point, where no one even knows their actually meaning anymore

I've had this argument for years...
People call them "MMORPGs" as a way of justifying the habit of siphoning money from all subscribers monthly. My name for the Genre is TAGs "Turn-Based Adventure Games." The main difference between an Adventure Game and MMORPG is that in an Adventure Game a player explores the world at their own will and combat is action oriented. In short your skills have to connect to enemies and you physically have to attack an enemy and expect your attack lands...An MMORPG has the system determining when you can attack, how much damage you will inflict and how "strong" enemies will be based on stats. This is why I call them "Turn Based."
Well first of all not all MMO's are MMORPG's. The MMORPG's being a subset of MMO. It sounds like you are playing a morpg in tank world - like Diablo 2. Multiplayer online role playing game. Massively would, in my opinion, include the persistant world and many many players.
As far as MMO's are concerned lately, I would like to see a lemon law instituted like they have for cars where I live. If you buy a game and it is an undiluted piece of garbage then you have 90 days to get your refund(or something like that).
Another thing is that a strict labeling rule should be enforced - as to what is a MMO, MMORPG, Morpg, etc.
Currently bored with MMO's.
It would be a great idea tolabel a game a certain way under set standards, but that would require millions of dollors to sign contracts with each gaming company and for your own company to get recognition. It would require a company like ESRB but rather than maturity ratings, would be rating gameplay.
Great idea, but hard to implement.
And on the main topic, MMO is a widely used term where it shouldn't be. I understand the similarities but it does not necessarily make it an MMO. It's all about the company's idea of what one is, and the wide array of definitions to each type of game, which is the main problem. Which, goes back to making a set standard.
