There's SWG (Star Wars: Galaxies), which might be a good option in about a month (once the bugs for the new combat system get worked out).
There's MxO (The Matrix Online), which is definitely different than other MMOs I've played. It still seems to be lacking a totally immersive feel, buts its a decent game at first play (I've been gaming on it about a week now).
CoH (City of Heroes) isn't what I'd consider a traditional mmorpg, or sci fi game. It doesn't have an economy to speak of, no crafting, etc. It's a super-hero mmo, which falls only partially into the sci fi genre (for me at least).
Those are the SciFi mmos that I've actually played.
A list of the rest: Darkspace Endless Ages Hostile Space Jumpgate Mimesis Neocron Project Entropia Star Sonata Starport Vendetta Online
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
The sci-fi side of MMORPGs hasn't been perfected. Have you tried SWG? You might like it. Personally, I think it's severely lacking, but that's just my opinion (I've played SWG, EVE, and PS).
Have you figured out more precisely what you're looking for?

Try "Face of Mankind" it's Sci-fi and the closest thing to PS imo. but it is still in beta stages.. so not much AI content and a few bugs still.
BE WARNED! THIS GAME IS HARDCORE TO THE MAX, FAINTHEARTED NEED NOT APPLY.
(thrust me you'll be wasted time)
but anyone out there that can handle FPS-twitchstyle gameplay, open-PvP and getting ganked alot and ganking others, and at the sametime getting invloved with HEAVY RP politics (see EVE). Then this game is for you.
Starwars Galaxies is the best Sci-Fi game out there. i have tested all those listed on this topic and i didn't like 'em even close to SWG.. SWG has alot to offer: Craftin, housing, standard hunt.. and alot of skills and proffessions.. Big worlds.. The only flaw is that there is too many Jedis and massive planets thaty players never ever would populate completly.. The most pity thing is that it's supposed to be played on the timeline from the movies Episode 4-6.. But it stopped to do that when alot of jedis popped up..

EVE is too hardcore for the average player....not many can deal with a economy simulation (cause thats what eve really is, pvp is just an afterthought)
i enjoyed AO but now that i look in retrospect it really was just a fantasy game with a sci-fi skin
He's already tried Eve, and he (she) didn't like it.
The best question to ask is what features do you most like in sci-fi mmog games?
Here's how I approach a new title:
- Find site
- Go directly to features page
- Look for features I know I like, and make a good mmog
- Read some of the forums to see if this stuff they say is in the game is actually IN the game (IE not "eventually" or "after release")
- If they have what I want, AND it's in the game, I wait 'till I know someone who's playing it, and ask them if it has features x, y, and z. If I don't know someone who's playing it, I read a few message boards or a couple game sites to figure it out.
Most of the time I pass on games due to lack of features and content (because I will be bored of the game in a month or less), the other portion of the time it's due to a really lackluster implementation of those features or just plain stupid mechanics/gameplay (because the game is really friggin rediculous and it was obvioulsy rushed).

Thrust you? We haven't even gone out on a first date yet.
Tried Eve, AO, Planetside came the closest to being what I want. I'm just sick of Elves and Fairies. :-(
Well just look on the left side of your screen... There's a lot of MMO to choose from... come on choose anything... maybe there's something there thaw would suit your taste for a MMO game... ok since you don't like fairies and Elves cross them out ok.. So go ahead and choose now... NOW!!!
Is eve monopoly in space? I have tried it out but its very very slow in the begining and the combination of floating in space all alone and the music is a real turn off.
"I'm sorry but your mmo has been diagnosed with EA and only has X number of days to live."
You could try Neocron 2: Beyond Dome of York if you haven't already done so. While I am still playing this, the developers can't seem to stop their continual downhill slide. I feel there's still some hope - atleast until the full retail release is out and we can see how much the develoeprs have really been doing recently.
Meanwhile I am excitedly keeping my eye on Fallen Earth, and looking further into the future (from my judgement, anyway) there's also Twilight War: After The Fall. Fallen Earth have already announced that they'll be using an FPS style combat system, and I'm hoping that Twilight War will do the same - personally I hate the typical icon based interfaces that most mmorpgs use.

EVE Online most definately doesn't suck.

the leveling sysetm is much difrent as it is time based.
so no power levling here.

ive played net games for well over 9 year now.
i have seen them come and go ,
sony make nice games but there games used to power level.
there games to show off wat u have . my gods sony is now even seling you items so u dont have to earn them.
i care not for a game full of 12 yea rold gamer runing around tying to be sumthing there not.
i would rather play a huge game where this is 20k players week end play on the one server,,,
i have to disagree.

I wish someone could make a game that is like EVE but that you also can walk out from the ship and act as a character and have housing and stuff..
Let's say that mix the cool space simulatiuon and graphics from EVE with the cool stuff you can do in SWG.. that would rock!
