Why is it so hard to build a good ranged class

I just droped WoW because the devs are in the throes of redesigning the fundamentals of the Hunter class. I had got to 49/60, but I have been a Ranger and Hunter in DAOC, a Ranger in EQ, and frankly I know this music and I think I'll sit this dance out.

Every MMORPG builds initially powerful snipers and quick levelers, and of course every FPS fan loves playing them so the class quickly becomes the most popular, and then the hard core RP'ers playing casters start getting to the same level and who is the casters natural enemy - why it's a guy who can pincushion them at range.

Does anyone else see this as inevitable - blade turn, range decrease below casting range, pet nerfs, etc

I had high hopes for Blizzard, but they were more of a dissapointment than Mythic or Verant.

I am starting to think it is njust not possible to create a sustainable design for a range class.

    OSI nerfed archers in UO too.  It's been going on since 98.  lol

    Perhaps you may wish to give GW a try? image

    They have a variety of skills for you to choose from depending on who you wish to hunt..image

    GW does actually have a pretty nice ranger class for what you were talking about. It's got a variety of different skills/things to do besides just archery. It has beastmaster, lots of druidish skills and such..::::01::

    I played UO as well, I don't remember a specific nerf to range attack but it's been a very long time, all I remember about it was owning a house on a rat man spawn and hanging with pals in the total comfort of our private spawn while outside was PK central. Loved that place :)

    I have GW and have not progressed far enough to tell if it is more of the same.

    I have played enough MMORPGs to realise that the associated boards are just a different game played by trolls who IRL are fat kids who like to tear the wings off flies. But sometimes where there is smoke there is fire and the signs point to some dissapointed Rangers out there, viz;
