Dragonlance MMO

Hey forum.

SO!

I just finished reading my...8th? 7th? 8th, I think, trilogy from the Dragonlance universe.

Now, for those who don't know, Dragonlance is this mod for D & D from back in the 80's. However it has, over time, developed a life of it's own and has become an open universe series with likely more than a thousand books covering the series massive history.

The Dragonlance universe spans a history of thousands of years, has most of the traditional fantasy races (ogres, goblins, humans, elves, dwarves, etc etc) along with a few original ones (Draconians for example), and a rich story line that, as I said, likely covers something around a 1,000 books total (I can't really be sure though).

Those who have NOT read it- go read a book or two before you post here- I will not have illiterate nubs smacking down my idea when they haven't even read the series.

So what i'm wondering is this, forum. What would a Dragonlance MMORPG be like?

What time period would it be set in?

What races included?

How much of the world (Ansalon, the primary setting of Dragonlance, is but one large continent among many on the world of Krynn) would actually be in the game?

Would there even be classes?

Any thoughts, ideas, or opinions on a Dragonlance MMO are appreciated.

P.S. For those of you old-schoolers who read the original trilogy, the series has now progressed into a few other periods such as the Chaos War, the Age of Mortals, the War of Souls, the Mina trilogy, and the series I just finished reading was about the unification of Solamnia under a single emperor for the first time in many centuries.

The answer is 42 you idiot!

I would love this, dragonlance is by far my favorite book series, Raist is the man.  It could definatly work too, already have maps of the world drawn up.  More lore than most other series out there.  Bunch of races to go on.  Got three sides based on the gods that you follow.  Yep could work for sure.  Also has a pretty good fanbase already which helps any game out.

    Definately :)

But, again, the question comes to what period could the game be set in to allow players to have SOME impact on the lore, but at the same time not mess with the lore or steal the spotlight from the Heroes of the Lance?

If I may suggest, the newest period, that is the post-War of Souls period, may be well suited for such a purpose.

Would rather see a cyberpunk mmo or something like Shadowrun...

    Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD
    Playing: Sims 3 & 4, Diablo3 and PoE
    Waiting on: Lost Ark
Who's going to make a Cyberpunk MMO?

I think any mmo would have to be set in the modern era (Age of Mortals?), but it would be awesome to have some sort of flashback mini game that allowed you to play through events from the past.  The modern DL era isn't my favorite, there are some things that happened in the last series that rather irritated me, but I would still love the chance to see the setting come to life.

The biggest obstacle would be the same uphill battle any well known ip would face, the fans.  As much as we would like to see the world come to life in an mmorpg, we would also be highly critical because it could never live up to our expectations.  Plus I think Wizards would be more likely to go with FR if they were going to back an mmorpg (other than this Neverwinter thing).

Setting the game in the other continent might give a lot more creative freedom and sidestep lore complaints.

btw I agree Raist is the man!

I read the original trilogy so I can't comment on the newer content.   All I can say is "what is taking so long".

I wish to go to the great hall of audience of the mountain dwarves and hear the words "The Hammer of Kharas" echoing through the halls.

Oh fizban where art thou !!!

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

because forgotten realms is superior and needs to be made first.

I always found Forgotten Realms to be bland and boring. Krynn has so much more to offer.

However if such a game, Dragonlance MMO would be a theme park, then I would rather have nothing. An open, explorable world with sandbox elements, pvp, crafting and depth, then I am all in.

I love the Dragonlance IP and would hate to see it mutilated as a themepark / wow clone..

    Quite right.

If Dragonlance Online was another freakin "I GOTS UBR GEAR AN U DONT NUB!" game i'd vomit then never look at it again.

Krynn is far too awesome to just be another raiding thing. In all honesty I think the game would be awesome as a Runescape style game (the Runescape from two or three years ago, obviously. Modern sucks).

    Also, Raist IS the man!

    Oh and Tasslehoff.

Would love to see a Dragonlance MMO, great setting for the pen and paper style, however I think the fantasy setting is tired and oversaturated atm.

I've been chasing dragons with sticks since the 80's pen and paper, on the computer since the late 90's, and they're still cranking those suckers out. Not knocking Wow, GW or GW2 (when it comes out) D and D online, or LotR but dang. Let's see something else for a while.

A good MMO takes, what, about 4 or5 years to develop? Now would be a great time to get that bad boy going while everyone has a chance to dragon detox. Just keep it out of Cryptic's hands, 2 year CO, STO,NWN, engine PoS isn't a good MMO!!!!

Lets just hope Atari or Cryptic never get their hands on another D&D IP again. If any company deserves to get there hands on it it would be Bioware.

I read the original 12 Dragonlance books back in the 80's. I don't remember too much about them other than Raistlin the Wizard and the little guy with the top knot.

Which set or trilogy sold the most copies? Whatever time that set of books is sold in is the time the MMO would probably be set in. It would be the most familiar setting with the most familiar counties, cities, etc.

I don't see it as a mostly themepark style game, but it would obviously make a good setting to present a story arc. Perhaps you could have several available story arcs to choose from where you could join in and play through (perhaps instanced, perhaps public quest style, perhaps both) while the world itself was open and allowed for sandbox style economics and building.

You would have to have different races, obviously. Perhaps you wouldn't have set classes, but I don't remember there being a magic using, sword swinging warrior anywhere in the story. Magic users were magic users and physical combat classes were physical combat classes. So we take that and allow free form choices or progression, but progression down some paths limits or eliminates other paths. Choosing to become proficient at swords means you don't have time to learn magic. Some races just wouldn't be good at certain things...like the little top knot guy wouldn't run around in plate armor...but maybe they could learn magic?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Yes Dragonlance would make a great MMO along with Forgotten Realm and one other that i think would make a better mmorpg than both of the above mention and be a bit darker is

Tanis, Goldmoon, Tass...oh how I miss thee. The first time I read a Dragonlance Chronical, it was The Legend of Huuma. I was so enthralled I read it two more times back-to-back. Those characters had more life in them than the living. It was both heartbreaking and awesome that the authors never shied away from killing them off either; it made it that much more real that your favorite heroes just didn't get to live forever.

But yes, I would kill for a Dragonlance MMO. By the same token, I can't think of anything that would jade me more than Dragonlance MMO done badly. If gaming is an addiction, that would be the cure for it.

I am kinda like this. Dragonlance is a great story and IP. BUt I am just dead tired of fantasy genre. I need a break and look for something without Wizard/cleric/warrior/thief

    P.S. Kill all baby unicorns

I don't know.  That Dragons of Summer Flame content expansion ruined the game, imho.

Mages were forbidden to wield any weapon beyond a dagger for self-defense by the gods of magic.  In general there isn't a lot of support in the lore for much class flexibility.

Any other ideas on a Dragonlance MMO folks?

I don't want this topic to die so soon :S

I think it would need to be set in the original Trilogy period.

Raistlin Majere was the very example of looking for uber gear! He was always looking for the next magic tome, staff, etc. It's a major part of any RPG, MMO or single and people need to get over it. Finding relics, artifacts and magic weapons and armor is always something wizards, rogues, warriors etc strived to find.

never read any of the books as a kid, but is this what the games Dragonlance and Champions of Krynn were based off?

cause those were some of my first CRPG games

Not really.  While he grabbed an artifact or two, he did a great amount of research by himself.  Most of his greatest finds and treasures were books.  Beyond that, the stuff he found and the magical items others found they kept with them throughout their careers.  They didn't replace it in the next few encounters or whatever.

Frankly, MMOs have become far too much about a gear treadmill.  While gear plays a role in other RPGs, it is generally a much, much lesser one (Diablo-like games are probably the biggest exception to this general principle, and even then you don't need the best gear to do well).  This is just lazy game design.

Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, and the Dark Queen of Krynn were in the same setting, yes.  They were great games (unlike some of the other Dragonlance games...)

    Would definetly love this MMO

If company that create it stop taking the easy road .

Sorry dragonlance is so rich for it diversity of races .

And most of all Draconians .

So if a company does pick it up , i expect to be dissapointed with standard elves dwarfs human kender .

Again no special races that makes dragon lance so unique .

But its one daunting MMO project though with so much sellable classes and races .

And the lore is so rich :D

Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms would be nice.  But, like what was already said, any of the game designers would screw them up bigtime.  The games would be nothing more than a gear grindfest.  But, if that were not necessarily the case, I would also like to see the same old stupid combat design be changed.  I for one am sick of the plate wearing tank standing in front of a mob and hurling insults at it while others actually do the damage.  It blows my mind that people still think is how it should go.  If you were a badass troll guarding a treasure would pay attention to the dude yelling your momma jokes swinging a sword every 5 seconds at you or turn and smack that leather wearing panzy upside the head that stabbed you in the back?  Hmm, even a dumb troll knows the panzy would be easier to kill.  Just saying it's time to come up with something new.  If Dragonlance were to be made, let's have something NEW for a change.
