what is the point of playing x and y?

sorry if this seems like a dumb question

what is the point of playing a mmo if its just kill x y mobs all the time? shouldent it all be about trying to emerce somone in a living world and make them feel intune with the role they are playing? like with some games there are dungeons and quests but what im getting at is i dont think weve had a mmo where you effect the world all that much or where it feels like its breathing, other then just a place where you can go and socalize. idk just why would you log onto a game where its just kill x y mobs all day ? dosent seem that fun. what else is there to do?

just a random thought sorry for crappy grammer and such ><

Character progression comes to mind for one, but this is an RPG trait, My biggest thing for MMOs is that I can play with others, there aren't a lot of co-op RPGs out so MMOs let me get my RPG fix with a friend.

If you leave it to it's simplest roots, like you did, you can make anything seem pointless. Everquest (Pre-Luc) owns one of my darkest shades of red glasses to date. Yet this game was simply grinding at pre-determined spots, or killing a big monster.

The immersion was brought on by myself. Making up the story, or feeling scared in a dungeon.

Well you could watch the movie Surrogates over and over, seems like that what this crowd really wants.  A way to feel immersed in a world without actually having to do anything

There is no point what-so-ever with many mmorpgs that are based upon non-community events, but on, literally, whack-a-mole concepts of single-player progression.  I think it's dishonest to suggest otherwise.

Massively-Multiplayer games, if they are that, should encourage massively-multiplayer cooperation, participation and influence.  Those are very broad-stroke remarks, but this subjectmatter is thesis-like if it's to really be addressed.

Dynamic player and community-centric game-play involvement within a virtual world has been done, probably best in EVE,but it can be improved upon whereby even the npc's are dynamic and events are dynamically influenced by the community.

No,I dont play any one mmorpg right now, and am waiting on Rift and SWTOR to see how and if they've progressed the massively-multiplayer elements of the genre, because I dont want to just kill x and y mobs all day.

Such as? Without the x and y you end up with a linear single-player-RPG-esque game with multiplayer that would be over all too soon. The only alternative would be a developer that somehow managed to put hundreds if not thousands of hours into a scripted storyline for you to follow. I agree the grind can be a bit dull at times, but I've never seen a viable alternative. Once someone comes up with one, it will be the next big thing.

I completely agree. There isn't a game that I have played where I didn't bring something to the table to enrich the experience.
