I am just pointing out that building a dog house isn't the same as building a sky scraper. Perpetuum might be a cozy dog house but that's about it. It is not dissing a game, just being realistic.

Saying that the game did not go for big numbers because they didn't want to or similar claims is just a blind fanboism and on a same level as trolling. If you want to promote the game, do it at least objectively and with both feet on the ground...

     Have you built a skyscraper?

Having had overseen the design and install of various automation systems in some of the biggest commercial projects in the US, I would have to say that it depends on who is building it.

Yes you could throw a dog house together, but you can do the same for a skyscraper. In fact the "Harmon Tower" at Las Vegas's City Center is a great example of a Skyscraper just thrown together...Its never opened and is now slated for demolition.

Like wise you could apply the same methods and calculations for building a dog house, it is really dependent on the individual and the plans they are following, if at all.

I imagine the same goes into building video games.

Just because someone says something nice about a game, does not classify them as a fan boi or a troll.

For a good example of that please refer to FFXIV forums.

To me it seems as if you are the "anti troll"

Spamming someone because they thought the games beta was going good.

In a way you seem like the grinch...but hey, what do I know.

Something about designing automation systems in large commercial projects?  I know about writing business software and reporting with some statistics thrown in.

I also know the Perpetuum Online launch was smoother than any other MMO launch I've participated in.  In addition to this, having more people in the game after the early access launch was more fun than having the number of people that were in beta.  I'm not exactly sure how I could be wrong about these two things...but I'm sure someone will jump up to tell me.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

If only game performance was just a matter of 'more hamsters'... The problem is, it isn't.

this is not EvE where you can put one system on a server  so more hamsters is not a solution

Yeah but eve was a piece of crap gameplay wise, and fun factor wise, hell the whole game blew, this is kinda more of the same crap in a diff wrapper, cept at least you have more direct control of yer mecha.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

This game isn’t EvE and the similarities are really only skin deep.

For starters the way skill points accrues on your account rather than training really changes how you look at your progression.  I don’t need to worry about when the next time I can log in to plan my skills but rather just let the points pool up and use them when I have enough.  Also with no training skills you don’t have to feel like it takes a month to get to the point where you can start training the skills you want.

Having complete control over your mech gives the combat and movement a completely different feel then EvE.

Yes, both games use Math as the predominant means to determine combat outcome rather than player reflexes or random number generators although Perpetuum does have some random elements they are just shadowed by the Math.  Both games end up requiring the player skill more on the front end with which skills you pick and how you load out your ship/mech.

On the whole I am enjoying Perpetuum right now and as has been said before the launch was extremely smooth and mostly bug free.  While it might be harder for someone to release a stable launch with 100,000 players over a few thousand I have seen plenty of games where the issues went a lot deeper than just server performance (FFXIV I am looking at you).

Oh, yeah. They intentionally did not advertise the game because they didn't want to and it certainly has nothing to do with the lack of funding and overall budget range...

I do not not know what the active player base is, nor you do. I just put the number there to put the scale in place and the game (pre)launched indeed with less than 1k online players, unlike the other 'crappy' launches.

I did know what the active player base was.  They used to have a graphic that showed every active account in the game, and the last time it was logged on, which faded to black over 3 days of inactivity.  You could simply count the number of dots and figure out how many accounts they had.   At the time of launch that number was over 1500, and was growing every time I checked it after the fact.

They have since taken this down for the obvious reasons that they dont want people to know exactly how many people have accounts, and how many of those play on a regular basis.

How many of those 'crappy' launches were with less than 1000 subs? :)

In case you're trying to say Perpetuum had that many, it didnt.  When early access started there was over 1500 accounts active, with the number growing by the hour.  However, the dev took this down as they probably dont want to reveal exactly how many people are playing the game all the time, down to the number.

This. I had known about the game for the longest time, but I stopped keeping an eye on it months ago and had aboslutely no idea it launched. Plan on taking a peek this weekend. Considering what has become of Eve and CCP, can only help this becomes an unspoiled refuge.
