    Darkfall :).

I only played it in beta, but night was REALLY night...Couldn't see anything unless the moonlight shined off the metal on your garb or the like.

The AoC "night" thing was not so mmorpg-esk.

     Ohhh man I remember this..

as a lowbie running from Qeynos all the way to Freeport just to try and meet up with my friends(well, and for the challenge lol)

    Kithicor was creepy at night!

For the main topic I would also say EQ1 was a good transition.Along with the erie night sounds that went along with it,really brought out the atmosphere of night time.

I also like Lotro's night for its sheer sky,the billions of stars make for a cool scene.

EQ2, LoTRO, and Fallen Earth, imo.....have the best night times.  Or rather just the best day cycles period.

Don't be decieved by the people who mentioned Age of Conan night time. In the starting zone it is as stupid as a shallow single player RPG. When you go night time you actually get transfered to a Solo Instance where everything suddenly is NIGHT TIME. So, night time is actually an instance that you decide whenever you want to enter it.

    It's stupid.

LotRO...specifically Forochel.  The aura borealis is breath-taking.  The first time I saw it, I stood there several minutes just to watch.

     Ahh yes Fallen Earth..

I remember playing during a night cycle where it was cloudy and there was lightning and thunder, but no rain..

that was a really cool and unique experience.

Nights in EQ where a pain, but now so many years later all the things that irritated me back then have become epic memmories of EQ's immersion....

I'd say EQ's nights where most memmorable...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I'd have to agree with you there.   EQ's nights were extremely well done.

i gotta say DArkfall for sure which most of you prolly have no idea what that game is or is about. Anyways the sky is amazing a real fantasy sky i gott add and the nights are beautiful white many stars in the sky and depth. Certain mobs come out at night time also, and Weather will play in affect to the game coming soon :D

EQ 1 all the way! Only game where the day/night cycle made the game more immersive and challenging.  Kithicor Forest, omg so awesome having to run through there and avoid the undead.

HEADS UP TO ALL WHO MISS EQ1!!!!! I just recently found out that EQ 1 is releasing another progression server in which the game is going to be rolled back to classic.  HOWEVER, this time the server is going to be time-locked, meaning that elite guilds wont be blowing through expansion content.  The time-lock hasn't been determined yet but a lot of players are asking for 3 months for EACH expansion.  There have been official announcements from Sony but a date hasn't been given yet, MOST are saying it will be ready in January! I for one will definitely be there.

    Cheers

Man... that's tempting as hell.  I'd really love to go relive that stuff, but I'm not sure EQ still has the population required to have a solid supply of PUG's during off-hours.  Not to mention I'm not sure I can justify paying a monthly sub for EQ these days--the sub by itself would be no big deal, and worth it.  It's the dozen or so expansions that have been released since I left PLUS the sub that would probably do me in.

    Peace and safety.

Ah yes i am a FFXI fan and i forgot about the Banshee nights. They really added that scare factor to the night and their scream yes was eerie.

I remember i had to wait until night to kill one for my first ever sub job quest,i did it on the Mhaura side instead of the usual Dunes.

Yes the Quifim bogeys were darn scary any kind of low hit pooints meant aggro from them as they smell blood. It was always a factor, come 18:00 on the clock better get worried and start to head for cover, not only the bogeys come out but the Undead Skeletons as well.

    I completely spaced FFXI. I really hope they do something like this in FFXIV. I thought more about it and yeah this really makes me miss EQ. It's so hard to play EQ now though ;_;

    Current MMO: WoW/GW2

Yeah I remember that. Shoot, I even remember specifically being somewhat excited that it was daytime sometimes because I was already lost enough as-is and running in the dark just made it worse.

    I miss that game.

Darkfall has the best night by far... and the cycles between are realistic as hell..

Of 100 MMOs Ive played Vanguard had the best night time. Very immersive and cool. Next would be probably AoC and LoTRO, but they are far behind

  • Creslin321Creslin321 Member Posts: 5,359

Yeah I would choose EQ1, mainly for Kithicor as everyone else said.

    I remember a funny experience I had...

I originally played EQ1 at release, and at that time Kithicor was basically an empty zone, no monsters at night time or anything.  So I would always run through it without paying any mind.  Then I canceled and resubbed a year later.  Let's just say when I tried to run through Kithicor at night I got a nasty surprise! :)

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Now that you mention it.....I have to add Vanguard to my very short list.  I had forgotten about it, but yes, you're right.  It had very good nighttimes.

So now my list would read:  Vanguard, LotRO, Fallen Earth, and EQ2.  (I didn't care for anything in AoC, sorry. I'm sure you have a point, unfortunately I didn't stay in that game long enough to agree or disagree, so...meh.)

Easily SWG. Anyone who says otherwise has never played it.

Just fyi, buying the latest expansion in EQ gives you all previous expansions.  So you only need to purchase 1 thing, and get a 30 day free if you create a new account with it.  It's not bad, and easy to get back into.

I miss the thrill of night in EQ, and I miss the incredible vistas and distant landscapes in Vanguard. When travel still existed in VG, it wasn't uncommon to jump into a boat with someone as a means of travel from one place to another. Especially from Qalia harbor. Would often sail into the night, with the bow of the ship aimed at the setting sun, while shadows started to cast on the desert plains. The rolling storm clouds were also quite amazing, if you had the hardware to turn on these details.

Then they removed travel, basically, with their rifts and such, along with a myriad of other things. Virtually removing all mystique from the game.

SOE, I both love you for what you once created and hate you with a righteous fury.

The only game that rivals VG's day/night transitions imo, is Fallen Earth. If Fallen Earth bites you, then you'll suddenly realize how beautiful the landscapes are, and how great the atmosphere is. When twilight sets after the sun goes down, it's quite great. You really feel like you accomplished something, when the sun rises again, as you turn into a gas station after a long haul to dust off your boots, and organize your salvage picked up during the night.
