So I am trying to decide if I want to give GW2 a shot. I played GW1 for about a year and enjoyed it. I didnt play through the expansion due to real life conflicts. I am concerned, however, that the rewards for those who have been playing GW1 and the expansion will give them a clear advantage. What are your thoughts? Will it be possible for someone to pick up GW2 and be competative?

I'm sure they won't get that much of an advantage. GW2 looks a lot better than GW1 was. There is no harm in trying it, give it a go when it hits release.
Put through the personal paces of my crippled fingers.
You'll perhaps get some very low level gear and some alternate skins for stuff from the Hall of Monuments. It might be slightly nice when you're brand new in Guild Wars 2, but I'd be surprised if anyone still cares about the GW1 holdover stuff by the time they're level 20, except for purely aesthetic reasons.
I care about the Hall of Monuments so much that I have 40 monumental tapestries stacked in storage that I haven't bothered to install, so I can't put anything in the hall of monuments for most of the stations.
Just have a read in the GW2 forum "Everything We Know About GW2" and then decide if you want to play or will wait and see on this game. That's a much more informative and sane way of deciding.
As to your q: There is some nice loot for the GW players, a "we take care of our own" for this (& a few extra $). The stats of the items will probably be surpassed by lvl 10 anyway, but the skins all look very interesting, as does everything in gw2 due to the artwork... No worries mate, no worries, envy is for socialists!

thanks-ill check out the thread. I've been on Warhammer for the last 2 years and am ready to check into something new.
Good to hear. I really liked WAR, especially the lore, but GW2 is doing a fine effort for creating a really interesting game world. Check all the links in the above thread.

They've stated a few times that the awards for GW1 players from the hall of monuments will have no advantage over regular items. They're purely for looks, and their power is the same as other weapons for that level.
Expect aesthetic bonus' only for the most part. They might try to make the weapons grow with the character similar to WoW's account based hand me down items, but they'll never outshine what you'll be capable of finding through normal gameplay.
This.
They have stated they are looking in to the mechanics to make the gear grow with your character so if you do want to keep wearing the HoM reward skins (skins is all they are, they won't have any bonus compared to available gear of the same level) you can. The point is simply to thank veterans and veterans can be spotted as such if they want to be. I think Anet have handled HoM rewards incredibly well, stopping any reward except a title to display at 30 means if you want to you can jump in the game and work towards it with only a little grind to get all the skins. The hardcore can grind at getting towards the max of 50 (I know a few veterans at max now) and have a nifty title to display how hardcore a GW player they were. At 40 myself so I'm still not hardcore enough
Guild Wars its self is worth playing just for the fun.I've had guild wars since it came out and only played it casually. When the HoM prizes were finally announced, I played more and more to get the prizes. Doing so has made me realized how fun the game is and how cool the story is. I've been playing almost everyday now for about 2 months and still have a ton of content to explore.
Guild Wars 2 wont be out for a long long time, so in the meantime you can enjoy Guild Wars 1. No monthly fee is a huge plus.
There will be no competitive/gameplay advantage for verteran players at all. Veteran players only get more cosmetic rewards from the Hall of Monuments. Nothing more.
I stopped at 30 and have been dedicating my time/resources to helping my friend go from 0 to 30 before release of GW2. Should be easy enough.
too bad your just concerned about pve. No, your fine. noone will shit on you as long as you do something beyond frapsing.11
pvp, yes, if you have never been a gvg freak in gw1(even if you and your guild sucked, but you tried), the people who played gw1 are superior. We ran AoC( on tyranny)and Aion( on fail) with ppl who didnt gw and it takes me months everygame 2 l2p them. with hc gw it does not.
If you don't get it 2 bad
Wow noturpal, you sure are true to your name...
I started playing GW1 recently because of the HoM to give it a shot. Its a very fun game and I've started to play it for the enjoyment and not just for a reward in another game. Give it a shot and see if you like it.
I bought GW long time ago.Several years. Finished cantha, elona, tyria even eye of the north but still have only 21 points in calculator. Im not hardcore gamer I enjoy the game. And i forgot i never play pvp. just boring for my naturality.
But now since calculator is out I was grinding like mad and did 5points in pve. After 2 weeks I wonder. Is it good for anything actually???
Because anet stated that those rewards are for new players, low levels and you will get better stuff even on lvl 5. Im just asking myself. Is it worth to spend time with grinding to get more points?
Do you get just as good crafting gear or do you grind to get gold / green gear in GW1? If you are fine with the crafting gear then you'll be fine with the default gear in GW2.
They have stated this is skin gear only. They have a system in place (still tweaking) to allow you to transfer skins from item to item.
You will have zero gameplay advantage with these GW2 items.
It is only worth it if you like / want the skins.
As a side note, if you're not sure you want them (you are close to having them all anyway) the just don't get them. They have said the HoM is a forever thing. So after picking up GW2 if you see the items in game and decide it is worth getting them then you can load up GW1 and get them.
If getting them is turning out not to be fun for you don't. As a suggestion, group up and help others get theirs while getting yours. It will return some of the fun to the grind.
