Putting Superman into a tier tree, is taking the Super out of him.
I don't care about that. I care about making my character like regular Superman and not ICE SUPERMAN!
The bottom line is that characters have to be balanced, so there will be limits in what you can create. Many superheroes have varying levels of super strength, that's why they put it in the iconic power pool so that anyone can select it. It doesn't come close to making for a separate set of it's own. There is no way that they would make any players in an MMO invulnerable. It would be too unbalanced. I think they chose Ice because it offered ice breath and maybe some armor and fire resistance ability. Everything else could be from the Iconic Powers pool and weapons abilities.
I think you are blowing it way out of proportion. They didn't make him "Ice Superman". It's just game mechanics. We have seen many videos of Superman, in game, and not once was he covered in ice. You should probably wait until you see it in game before you make a big fuss. They simply stated that they felt that he best fit into that category. Super Strength was already in the Iconic pool, as was the eye lasers...and who knows what else. They felt that Ice was the best choice for the rest.

I know that, but how can there not be a "strong and tough" set? Are there a bunch of strong and tough powers in the other tree? What if I want to make a dude like Hulk? He doesn't have ice powers.
Because, strong and tough don't make for a set. I think you are stuck in a CoH mindframe. Those are just 2 abilities, and Super Strength is already part of the Iconic Powers pool. For all I know, Tough could be too. This isn't City of Heroes, where your power set controls your attack moves. Different attacks would already come from your weapon choice, most likely Brawling. There's nothing to base a separate " strength" set around. Besides, The Hulk doesn't have Ice Breath, Superman does. Another set may work better for the hulk. Keep in mind that you don't have to buy a bunch of ice powers. You can spend all your points on Iconic powers, and weapon abilites. Also keep in mind that you spend points to upgrade powers, not just buy new ones. You can spread them out over many options or beef up a smaller set of abilities.
From everything I have seen, there is a far greater ability to customize your character than what you can do in CoH, or CO. It's pointless to discuss the rationality behind them choosing Ice. We have no idea what powers that they actually use from the Ice set.
I'm not talking about NPC SUperman. I mean me making a Superman-type character.
I don't want ice. I don't want fire! If those ones are okay, how come I can't have tanking that's not those?

This is just not true for CO. hate or like it as much as you want, you could spend hours on that game just creating Heroes, and that was an awesome builder.
DCUO does not do this. Every area you can customize has about 10-20 options at creation, anything else you want do do for your look or costume you must unlocked.
The problem DCUO has, is the limited scope of powers. Superman is not Ice, he is a Might build with Iconic heat vison and Iconic Frost breathe....You cannot create at character that is truely "inspired" by him in the game.
I am in closed beta now and I am not sure if NDA has lifted or not so I am not going to go into much detail. But the reason you cant be Superman is because there is a Superman.
If you watch the trailer of the game Lex Luther kills the Justice League in the near future, including Superman. When this happens Braniac makes his move to take over the planet and captures Lex. Lex eventually escapes bringing with him these bug like things (forget the name) that he stole from braniac. Lex time travels to the past to warn justice league of what may happen if they dont react. At the same time, Lex releases those bug like things, almost like nanobites, into the earths atmosphere. When they come in contact with a human being they gain super powers. Now thats the start of the story...
Now for where you come in. You choose to be a villain or Hero, then you choose your mentor. Your mentor, whether hes/she is Superman, Lex, or one of the other icons will be your boss and will lead you through the main story line. For your powers because you cant be Superman (let me emphasize again, Hes your boss and can only have one Superman for story/Lore purposes), you get as your main ability type, Brawling. Its the first skill tree you get access to. Since Superman fights mostly with his hands and his powers second that makes sense. Now the ice is your secondary power you get, however I should mention you dont have to stick with that. You can go into the customization and choose another power type while creating your character. I chose Fire. There is other powers you can choose but I dont have the game open in front of me to list them. Levels 1-9 you will be focusing on adding skill/power points into the first two trees as you gain through leveling. This can give you things like grappling, knock backs, super sonic flight (you get basic flight at lvl 1 unless you chose different travel power), and much more. Level 10 is when you start gaining points for the iconic powers.
So yes, you cant be Superman or Lex, you arent met too. But, you are part of his team in helping him take out Braniac and all the other baddies out there. i hope that clears a little of why you cant make an exact copy of your favorite Super Hero or Villain.
This.
To Clarify, the games story is that brainiac steals the powers of the worlds superheroes. In the cinematic, Lex kills most of the Justice League, including superman, BEFORE Braniac arrives and steals the powers. Also lex steals SOME, not all, powers from Braniac and travels back in time. Hence two reasons why we cant access Superman-esque powers ( not all of them anway)

I don't see how? If you have to wait until lvl 10 to choose any iconic powers, then there is the heat vision, frost breath. The skill "iconic might" only lets you pick up cars, but i've heard adds nothing more to your character.
The most important part of my post:
Where is the Might power set? (Read this as not the brawling skill. I need invulnerability type Physical powers, not to be encased in Ice or fire to tank.)

There is no might power set, there is a "brawling" set which is your weapon skill that does everything a "might" set... might do. From what I've been told invlunerability comes from alternative power sets that are prevalent in all three sets, including the Fire, Ice and Iconic power sets.
I don't believe there are innate powers directly geared towards invulnerability, but as with increasing your strength to pick up cars, you can also increase your defense to mitigate more damage, or increase damage or critical hits to do more damage.
The only thing you wouldn't be able to replicate would be having both super speed and flight.

Exactly my point. I HAVE to take Fire or Ice to get to the effects i want, and spend points in those trees for abilities i do not desire to get down to what i would consider low level Might Power abilities, and they are locking down the magic abilities to 6??? seriously???. Like some PBAOE ice ability shoots shards of ice, I do not want to shout ice or fire for my AoE, i instand want to do a ground pound or a thunderstomp, for MY Hero. They are supposed to be using a "Mastery System" similair wot WAR and WoW, so that all builds in "POWER SET" inherently increase the trees role, so a Fire/Ice gets increased crit chance/more life/more defense for passivelt for points spent. And like they said FIre/Ice are tanks which is waht i want to do. and Tech is Crowd control, and Magic is healing, but everyone can dps.

You don't have to shoot fire or ice as your AOE.. but its part of your character progression. The only reason you are taking a fire or ice set is because those allow for a tank role. You have to select a power, but its very possible that you do not need to use any of those power abilities. You have roughly 8 slots for various powes. If you select ice, it stands to reason that you don't have to use any of those ice powers at all, you can spec all of those in your flying abilities or iconic powers instead as you have attack powers there too such as the eye beams and who knows what else. You may not be able to do this at level 1.. but it is available to you.
As for doing a those "might" moves, from what I'm to understand you have some sort of brawl set that likely will do these things including things like a thunder clap or what have you.
Its not an easy 1 - 2 thing to make the exact superman character, it may be slightly tough to do it actually, but you also aren't supposed to be making the exact heroes, just mildly imitate them. If you want to go as far as making an exact superman copy with this system, it seems doable but you'll have to make some minor sacrifices.
Well for the invulnerability that's a different thing altogether
it has NOTHING to do with Superman's superpowers it's something that happened to him because of who he is which is a Kryptonian. All the Kryptonians are invulnerable to a point it's the benefit of a Yellow Sun on Earth
However the Heat Vision, the Flight, the Super Strength, the Ice Breath, and the Super Speed
All these things are his signature super powers and there's only one Superhero just slightly faster than Superman and that's The Flash
If they made it in game where you could be like Flash but not as fast THAT would be the defininition of completely bassackwards
And as far as the Lantern Core goes nannites couldn't replicate that unless somehow the Nannites replicated the rings and these once normal people were inducted into the Core. Same with Sinestro Corps
And all this talk about OH it's SO overpowered ot have this or that
Well riddle me this then if Superman is the end all beat all and Wonder Woman is right behind him how come they got the complete HELL beat outta them in the cinematic?
*slaps the devs around with a wet stinky trout* Use your imagination and stop trying to place DC Superheroes in a particular category when they're mixed breeds
Uh, all of Superman's abilities come from being a Kryptonian. Not just his invulnerablilty. He's not a mutant of the race or anything. He is plain jane of the stock. And as for being the fastest, that isn't true either. Captain Marvel and Black Adam are capable of Trans-Light speed, which Superman can not accomplish. They are also just as strong as he is, despite what the cinematic portrayed. I assume Adam was unable to hurt Superman because Supes had just gotten back from basking in the Sun recharging his abilities, where as Adam had been sitting on Earth with the Nannites.
As for the Lantern rings. They are computers. Last I checked so were the nannites. It stands to reason they could drain a rings power, which makes since for how Adam was able to punch through his construct shields. However I do think it would be quite lame to have the powers and not be a member of the Corps with a ring.
I do think it would be quite lame to have the powers and not be a member of the Corps with a ring.
There are other characters in the DCU though that have light powers that also have no affiliation to the GLC/SC, like Dr. Light, light lass, and even Alan Scott (the original green lantern, as his powers are from a piece of the StarHeart., and not the Oan battery).
superman gets ALL his powers from the yellow sun...period. if you look at it from a year by year stand point the longer he lived under it the more diesel he became and by the time he was grown he was "faster than a speeding bullet, and more powerful than a locomotive." able to shoot pure heat from his eyes, and look at a dude and smirk when he pulls out a gun and shoots him in the face. the only reason the flash is faster than him (pure comic nerd here) is that flash runs at max if he doesn't push, up to at least 3 times faster than the speed of sound. again on FOOT that is.......superman if he flies can, if he pushes....almost fly at the speed of light. which is faster but superman is always about being fair so he'd never cheat in a pure footrace with flash.
but the point is....not having all the powers at your disposial is kind of..."meh" but if they did it so you could....who'd pick other heroes lol? or even try......we'd all just be superman, and there's no fun in that. in order to make the superman treee playable and not have scores of people screaming for nerfs is to just not give him the godmode he should have in general. and yes i know most will say "batman will stand up to him." and there's 2 reasons for that. 1:batman KEEPS a kryptonite ring in his belt at all times. and 2: that dude's friggin nuts.
I'd say wait until you've played or at least until the NDA is lifted to make a judgement call on the powers and power sets and things like Supes using the Ice power set. Things "could" work out to where you have many more options than you realize.

Sounds like this game sucks.
Actually, it's rather easy to make a character very close to batman.

Batman seems pretty easy to make, but batman doesn't have 8 different powers across different power sets. It would, however, be somewhat tough to make the Martian Manhunter with this system. For characters like the flash and batman.. and wonder woman without her toys... shouldn't be tough at all.
This is incorrect. Lex states that Braniac had been siphoning powers for years, but everyone was too busy fighting to notice.
Yeah except Lex Luthor was the one who killed the Big three. Brainiac only acquired the powers of those he killed, like the ones that tried fighting back when he arrived. This is explained in the cinematic and the wikipedia article for it.

Ok. We've gotten off topic, but watch the trailer. When it transistions from Lex looking at Braniacs invasion fleet to him talking to the Trinity in the present, he says: "Braniac had returned. For years, he'd been stealing the powers of Earth's protectors, but we were too busy fighting amongst ourselves to see the danger. With you three dead, Braniac quickly defeated the remaining heroes. The lucky ones.......died fighting."
The wiki says nothing about the exobites being used only after the Trinity had been defeated, or them only taking powers from the dead/defeated.
In my humble opinion, If we are to accept that Braniac's exobites can leach magic abilities, Speed Force abilities, the intelligence needed for mastery of gadgetry or the agility needed for weapon-based fighting styles, then we can also assume that said exobites can leach Kryptonian DNA "powers" which are only present under a yellow sun.
Will the devs ever add a Might set for quasi-invulnerability et. al.? Not for launch. For now, if you want to be like Superman (tank), you'll either have fire powers, or you'll have ice powers. If you choose to go the "inspired by" route, you'll be ice.
Do I agree with the decision? Not really, but then again, I have no desire to play as a Superman-type character so it doesn't affect me as much as the OP.
Do I want to see a bunch of peeps running around that a dual pistol / gadget character can't even scratch? Hell no! It's called balance and Superman is broken.
/end rant

First off. I understand you think we are getting off topic. I am trying to explain why Supermans powers cannot be duplicated from a LORE standpoint, and the OP ask why is Superman's power ice and not "Might and Mastery". Im sorry but I dont see this as off topic. Just because we are trying to clarify what points describe this reasoning, to me is exactly on topic.
Second, while yes you are right, there is no mention that the exobytes were used after superheroes were defeated, you are basing your whole counter argument based off ONE LINE: " Brainiac has been stealing the powers of super heroes for years" That in itself doesn't explain whether the Trinities power were stolen, or if Brainiac had aqcuired them before their defeat. They are clearly shown using their powers in the cinematic. However one can use deductive reasoning by reading the article, watching the cinematic, and listening to what was said BESIDES focusing on that one line.
Reason in point #1: from wikipedia article:
"The story of DCUO is set in the "present day" and the game begins with the arrival of a time-traveling Lex Luthor who has come to warn the Earth about a future battle that kills off the majority of heroes and villains, leaving the planet vulnerable to an invasion by Brainiac."
We can deduce that Brainiac invades AFTER the defeat of the Trinity. If he already had acquired all the powers pre invasion, why did he decide to invade after the defeat of the trinity? why did he wait? why didnt he just kill them himself? One would assume that if he had acquired powers way before he invaded, there would have been less resistance, or none at all, or some other PIS.
Reason in point #2: from wikipedia article:
"In the present, the future Luthor tells the Justice League that Brainiac then proceeded to eliminate all of the heroes and villains who would attempt to defend Earth from his attack with the future Luthor remaining as the sole survivor"
Again we can deduce that he started defeating superheroes AFTER he arrived. Now this next part is more open to interpretation, but if you noticed in the cinematic, he invaded with his standard issue "Robots" One would think that he stole powers to USE them against other superheroes. If he had acquired powers before he invaded, in the instance we saw, he was not using them to any real degree. Why not? Would one not think he would have acquired them for a specific reason or purpose, rather than for say as a novelty or something similar?
Also if he had already acquired superpowers, why kill the remaining superheroes? why not enslave them or something? He supposedly already had their powers. as well why not kill them before the invasion started so that he would have less resistance?
Also, if he had acquired powers before the invasion, I think Luthor would have had something more to say except for "He was stealing powers for years" as this is something important and plot changing. I think something to the effect of: "He used those powers against the remaining superheroes to quickly defeat them. With these powers, he had the potential of DOZENS of teams of Justice Leagues at once, at his disposal" or something similar.
Now from this there are many things that one can assume DID happen. This is why in my original post I stated two alternatives. I will list them again for your convenience:
#1. I stated that Brainiac may not have been able to steal Superman's power because it was not Brainiac who defeated him, but rather Lex Luthor. Lex Luther also defeated Wonder Woman, which one would assume would share Superman's "might and mastery" powerset. This alternative would explain why the exobytes brought by Luthor do not have Superman's stolen power.
#2. Another alternative. It is clearly stated that Luthor stole only SOME of the exobytes. so before WHITELANTERN even said a counter argument towards my statement, I already listed the possibility that Brainiac DID indeed steal Supermans power. I went on to state that because Luthor only stole some of the exobytes, it can be assumed he was not able to take supermans power because either he did not have enough time, or he didn't find it when infiltrating Brainiacs base.
This is my reasoning to explain from a LORE standpoint why Superman has an ice powerset and not "Might and Mastery" it is to compensate for the fact that his powerset cannot, or was not, duplicated. I however agree with you, WHITELANTERN, that from a GAMEPLAY standpoint, Superman's powerset would be OVERPOWERED. That is to say that his powerset would include many powersets rolled into one, as well as many people would use his powerset just because Superman is so much more identifiable than the other figures. Because of these two points, it would UNBALANCE the entire game.
Between me and WHITELANTERN, you have a few LORE reasons and GAMEPLAY reasons why Supermans powerset does NOT appear in game.
That is all. I apologize for the rather long post, and thank you for your time.
No matter how far into the future it is, Lex Luthor is still Lex Luthor and Lex Luthor hates Superman, hates Kryptonians. Why would he want to allow for several Superman clones running around that he can't control.. Yes Lex went back in time to save the world, but seriously it is Lex, we all know that Lex went back in time to save the world becaue he isn't the one who ended up ruling it, if that isn't the case they have not written Lex well at all.
Ah, I see where our disagreement comes from now. Thanks for clearing that up.
See, my thought from watching the trailer and such is that Braniac was leaching the powers off of the Metas but not completely taking them; thus the reason they didn't notice. It seems that the way you understand it is that Braniac was stealing the powers and leaving the Metas without their powers. At this point, I don't know which one of us is more correct in our interpretation of events. I assume that will all be cleared up as the lore is fleshed out in the comic and other such venues. I also can't say at this point what was Braniac's ultimate goal of stealing the powers. It could be assumed he was going to possibly make his own Metas to take over the world, but there really is not enough information yet to make that conclusion. Maybe he was de-powering them so no one could stand against him.
I do agree that Lex didn't steal all of the exobites and there is talk in-game that Lex didn't release all of them that he took.

I'm not talking about NPC SUperman. I mean me making a Superman-type character.
I don't want ice. I don't want fire! If those ones are okay, how come I can't have tanking that's not those?
It's dumb.
wtf, who care about STO?
This is just not true for CO. hate or like it as much as you want, you could spend hours on that game just creating Heroes, and that was an awesome builder.
DCUO does not do this. Every area you can customize has about 10-20 options at creation, anything else you want do do for your look or costume you must unlocked.
The problem DCUO has, is the limited scope of powers. Superman is not Ice, he is a Might build with Iconic heat vison and Iconic Frost breathe....You cannot create at character that is truely "inspired" by him in the game.
*** edited for spelling
Yes, actually you can. You just can't do it at level 1.
This is incorrect. Lex states that Braniac had been siphoning powers for years, but everyone was too busy fighting to notice.

Played:FFXI, WoW, LOTR,EQ. Playing:FFXIV.
Looking Forward To:DCU, SWTOR.
I'd say wait until you've played or at least until the NDA is lifted to make a judgement call on the powers and power sets and things like Supes using the Ice power set. Things "could" work out to where you have many more options than you realize.
What I can't make Batman either?!/!
Sounds like this game sucks.
Actually, it's rather easy to make a character very close to batman.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Batman seems pretty easy to make, but batman doesn't have 8 different powers across different power sets. It would, however, be somewhat tough to make the Martian Manhunter with this system. For characters like the flash and batman.. and wonder woman without her toys... shouldn't be tough at all.
*EDIT* Quote mechanic is being gay. See the real comment below.
Yeah except Lex Luthor was the one who killed the Big three. Brainiac only acquired the powers of those he killed, like the ones that tried fighting back when he arrived. This is explained in the cinematic and the wikipedia article for it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Universe_Online
/end rant

who cares about superman anyway
im making a joker theme villain, leaning towards punchline as a name, darkseid powers
that is:
ultra strength (super +venom injector from steam order)
eye beams of doom
immortal
ultimately insanely evil
i dont care if you dont find armagheddon funny, i think its hilarious!
How does one get super strength if it isn't a power type? is it just like through stat points?????????/
