If you google there was a HoM and LoL comparison doing the rounds. LoL is free and easy to set up an account etc and seems alright from what I've seen so far (free).
You should try LoL first I think. It's free, and I do believe it's the most user friendly. It might not be the best of them, but there's no doubt it's the easiest to start with.
And since it's free you can just download it right now and try it. Then if you end up loving the whole MOBA thing, maybe try HoN... Or wait for DotA 2.
Just go in knowing that the community isnt the most mature or friendliest one.
I play some LoL from time to time, big tip is knowing the /ignore command and an even bigger one is to find people that you like to play with whether its friends or from some other source.
I play LoL, but I haven't tried out the other two. What I like about LoL is that you gain IP(Influence points) which then can be used to purchase champions or runes and maybe other stuff too. The only thing that if you choose to pay for can be for different character skins. Otherwise you can get everything for just playing the game.
They also release a new champion every month or so.
I personally like LoL. It is easy to pick up but hard to master. It is by far more intuitive than both DotA and HoN. I don't think anyone will argue that. In LoL they removed denying, or the process of killin gyour own minions to deny exp and gold to the other team. I feel this was necessary. While it does take some skill, it really takes focus away from the game itself. Denying, if it exists in a game, dominates your play, instead of focusing on killing things.
LoL has managed to fairly blance many champions. They have very interesting mechanics.

I played Dota for years then some LoL with my friends. Very fun game and the only dota "clone" that features some kind of progression AFAIK.
