IN MY opinion FEES ARE THE THINGS THAT MAKE AN MMORPG GREAT. BEFORE YOU THINK IM INSANE HEAR ME OUT. without fees mmorpgs are nothing unable to advance in patches with low funds. 50$ will make some profits for the company but after a year or 2 not many buyers will play and the current ppl playing will be angry and never buy from the company again.

STOP MAKING THREADS. You make sooo many pointless overdone ones.
I hear ya, a mmorpg is just that ONLINE, So they need money to keep the servers up and running order, Hire gm's to listen to us bitch all day, and game devs to make new updates.
This is where the main problem of mmorpg Lies.
In order for Game devs to make money they have to make you RESUBCRIBE each month, you gotta be playing ussualy in order to feel like youve done something. So what do they do? They invent something called the "grind" Its simple a time sink to keep you playing.
Name one mmorpg that you've played because of the gameplay? None of the fps ones please
I think some people do not realize how much bandwidth costs for 60,000 people.

Stop spamming the forum and make one thread about it. If you are trying to find a game to play, make one thread, and explain what you want to play.
It's too bad the forum can't!!

NCSoft brings the proof that fees are not necessary by bringing out Guild Wars. I fully understand why developers charge fees for online games though. But NCSoft makes a very good move by bringing out an incredibly good online-based game without the monthly fee. I read all of your replies, and I highly disagree with at least 1 of them: that fees are necessary to keep a game like WoW, EVE, Everquest or Guild Wars up-to-date and playable. This can also be done by bringing out expansion packs.

Ok so you would rather spend $50 twice a year than pay $100 a year in monthly fees?
If you sign up for a year at a time games are often a lot closer to $100 a year. I guess I fail to see the difference between paying monthly (or a year at a time), vs. paying $100+ per year in CD sales.
At this point it appears to be slightly cheaper to play Guild Wars, but to be honest, it's not really an MMO either. Their server needs are much lower, and thus the costs are too.
Many people have complained that it's not a "true" MMO and that was a turnoff for them. So being less expensive does not always mean it's better. Especially if you have to sacrifice that live shared world feeling, when you were looking for an MMO.

I'm a little divided on fees, they have there up sides and down sides.
On the down side there are people (like myself) who cant pay for these monthly fees so a game like Guild Wars is a god sent. True it does help to wittle down 'immature dolts' inside the game and community but there are people who aren't like that and still want to play but cant. There are lots of MMORPG's that i'd love to play but i just cant because of the fees.
On the up side the people who produce these games need to earn money and keep the game running for people to continue to play. As has been mentioned before many things are needed to keep a community flourishing and i'm afraid it is the money of that community that does it.
As for a forum where monthly fees are necessary lol i think it speaks for itself
Guild Wars isn't an MMO. Bandwidth goes up exponentially with more players in an area. Guild Wars gets by this by drastically limiting the number of people in a given area fighting together. On top of that, it has yet to be proven that Guild Wars can be a success. Just because a game releases doesn't mean it will be profitable. In a real MMO where there can be hundreds of people interacting together at the same time, the bandwidth usage is outrageous and these games couldn't afford bandwidth let alone the staff to keep them going without a monthly fee.

I say yes and no to monthly fees. I see how they provide money making in the long run, so they games can be come better etc. I think that if a game is goning to have a monthly fee, then it should not also cost 50$ to purchase. The gaming industry targets alot of kids, like me, that just can't afford 50$ and the fee. So I say do one or the other. Or even have a low retail cost then a monthly fee. This way they make so money off profit and then they have the long term money aswell.
Take a game like WoW for example. I wanted to get it, but I don't have 50$ to spend ont the game then 15$ montly so I had to say no to getting it. NOw im happy i didn't get it because I can get guild wars for retail then I have and don't have to pay every month. Just my thoughts on how it should me.
Personally, if I like the game, I do not mind paying the monthly fees.
If I don't like it, the developers can't get a single dime from me
