you're in a tuff spot. a F2P game is gonna have everything you don't want. that's why they're F2P. very very cash shop based. they make them that way for a reason. very profitable. as far as not paying over 10 a month for a quality P2P, not sure that's gonna happen either. FFXI is about there, but it's the worse grind i've ever seen in a game. summoner burns make it not so bad right now, but it's still ruff. i'd try and reconsider the monthly $$ you would kick out. 15 a month is damn cheap for any game. if you both played for like a half an hour a night, every night. that's only like a dollar an hour to play a game that doesn't end after 15 hours of gameplay.
not wanting much of a grind, and still fairly cheap? i'd go consol tbh.
as others have said though, Rift is coming out soon, and looks like a solid all around mmorpg. find something to kill your time till it drops, and hope it doesn't suck. lol
I am not sure how many games are under $10 a month. $15 a month is pretty standard. I think you are left with FTP games and to be honest many FTP games are not going to give you everything you want in a game.
I think Vanguard is a good choice. There is a 2 week free trial and you can buy the game on ebay for 99 cents with $4 delivery so that gives you a month and a half for 5 bucks. If you have two boxes that can run it I think it is your best bet, outside of the 10 dollar requirements.
If you are not willing to pay more than 10 bucks a month I would just look at FTP games and possibly jump from game to game every few months. Most FTP games, from my experience, wear thin after a few months. If you want a long term game try Vanguard. LOTRO might be a good choice, I have not played it yet but they have a FTP model.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
I really have no reasonable suggestion if you think WoW has too much grind and is hard to get into. It is about as casual friendly as it gets. Getting my wife into WoW was the worst thing I ever did. She leveled every class to 80, has more gear on her alt than I do on my main, and has almost 7k achievement points. I'd rather have her be the hot nerd hater she was when we met instead of the girl with the nerdback telling me about her Heroic Lich King attempts.
This is hilarious. Hahahaha. That's awesome.
OP: All the suggestions are fine...most games have good things about them. I followed Darkfall and other games but they always speak so big and deliver so small. You'll have to experiment.
EvE, Perpeturam, and Fallen Earth. Those 3 games have a great mix of PvP, PvE, and in depth crafting system were crafters are actually useful, so your GF will fix in those games and you'll get your fix of both PvE and PvP.
Edit: Darkfall is decent, but the crafting in it is bland. However, the you can try the game for free currently for 14days. The learning curve, like EvE and Perpetuamm is steep, but once you learn the ins and outs you'll be ready to pwn face.
Everquest 2 is the perfect couples game. Lots of girls like playing Aion for some reason.. You guys aren't gonna find nothing under 15 bucks a months though. That's the standared fare for online mmo's has been for quite some time. EQ2's F2P model doesn't allow you do do a lot other than questing and combat but for the 15 bucks a month it's well worth it for a couple's game.
Depends on the sort of MMO you like. Fantasy? Sci-Fi?
[object Window]
Star Wars: Galaxies has the most in-depth and complex resource-gathering and tradeskilling. A couple of ppl working together can level to the cap in 6 months of just weekend play (not counting entertainers and traders who can be leveled to cap in mere days with the right resources) $15/mo
[object Window]
Age of Conan is low-fantasy and pretty hard-boiled tone set in gorgeous environment. Two people working together can level comfortably. Tradeskills are not very complex but they are gradually evolving them to be more. $15/mo or $97/yr
[object Window]
Anarchy Online is Sci-Fi with a dash of cyberpunk, can be free or $5/mo or $15/mo($95/yr) depending on what content you opt into. Leveling is largely linear (classical) leveling with just moderate amount of quests but they[object Window]ve recently added a lot of [object Window]Daily[object Window] leveling content you can digest in 30-45 mins a day and level comfortably. Tradeskilling can be pretty complex.

I actually had to call my wife over to read this one -.- it sounds a lot like us. I would have to agree with most that wow sounds like the happy medium for you since I know it was for us. I personally hate wow, but she loves it. i was an avid FFXI fan before she got interested in my hobby. It was the best mmorpg I have ever played as far as things to do, but it is pretty grind heavy and way too time consuming. Not to mention it is hard to start it this late in its age. But the feeling of accomplishment I got when completing things in FF goes far beyond any of the gay achievments you can get in WoW.
But my better half doesnt like to work for hers and she likes the easymode WoW offers so untill GW2 comes out, it may be your best bet, though it pains me to say so.
I'm in the middle of downloading Runes of Magic as I post. I believe that was suggested somewhere, and reading the gameplay info, it sounds like just what we've been looking for. The similarities of WoW scare me a bit, but I'm withholding judgment until I actually play. By all means, keep posting suggestions, as we're still quite open to ideas. Also, thanks to all that have posted, we appreciate you taking the time to share your ideas with us.
skill templates that are just a starting point with options to develope the exact character you desire.
tons of crafting options
pick out your own house and place it wherever you want as long as the spot is big enuff for your housing size. build or find or buy items and storage boxes for all the loot you get and put it in your house or on vendors that can sell it while you are off having fun.
two versions of the world. One for PvP and one for PvE.
plenty of long time players and guilds that will greet you with open arms and help you starting out.
The game gives you tons of dungeons and lands and expansions to explore and there as still expansions being released to this day.
The cost per month is I think $10 per month with a 3 or 6 month subscription.
Pretty much all the things you have been looking for in a game and the system requirements are not that high.
Downside is graphics. If elite graphics and many different views are your thing then skip this one. But if you haven't tried the MMORPG that really kicked things off for all others to follow...then you should try it for a bit just so you can experiance it. There is a free 2 week trial available as well.
If you find the CS in RoM is too much, I would also suggest Fallen Earth. It has a trial so you can always get to play free for 10 days and see if you like it.
It really sounds like something you could enjoy (as long as you don't mind it's Post-Apoc, not fantasy).

Holy crap. do not play RoM. i have a year and a half in that game right now, and have an epic epic mage on osha. this is the most expensive free to play out there. no joke. lots of issues too. so many bugs and... well. lots of issues. check the rom websites forums. no joke.
I've just started playing RoM as well. I play it so casually that I have no interest in spending any money on it... If it gets to the point where I feel the only way to continue is by spending cash, then I'll know it's time to hang up the towel. I'm just waiting for Guild Wars 2.
My game recommendation to you would either be RoM for now or give FFXI a go. I've never played FFXI but have heard nothing but praise for it's group play. Hope you guys find something!
If you're into WoW-like F2P game, Allods Online has FINALLY became a true F2P game that doesn't force you to buy stuff with real money. Shame that it'll carry that initial stigma forever now.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.
I'm going to throw Battle of the Immortals (F2P) out there. I played it for awhile when it first came out and found it fun and very easy on the hands as travel was nice and simple. You could click and walk long distances. It is very Diabloish and the store money could be made in game without having to break out the credit card.
Can I ask how long you tried LotRO? They have recently (as in the last 2 weeks) made large areas free to play that were previously pay to play.
My girlfriend and I have been looking for an MMO that we can both get in to together. I've done some research on the Web, but didn't come up with much, so I figured I'd ask here.
I am:
A competative Gamer who enjoys a medium amount of grind, non-combat and combat based elements in a game, (PvP and PvM as well as crafting, creating, skilling, etc.) I'm not picky about game popularity or community size, but I do not want to pay over ten dollars for a monthly fee or play a game where most bonuses and high end items are buyable from an official game store. My ideal MMO would be one where you paid a small monthly fee and couldn't really purchase anything else with Real Cash that gave you any sort of up in the game world.
She is:
Very non-combat skill oriented and a relaxed gamer. She loves things like mining, crafting, fishing, smithing, prospecting, tailoring, etc. She is fine with grinding and doesn't like to do much related to PvP, but enjoys PvM play. Her pay standards are the same as mine.
If anyone can reccomend any games, we'd love to get any information we can on them. Also, we've tried a few game already and they haven't worked for both of us:
-Guild Wars (I played it for years but she can't get into it.)
-Runescape (We both played years ago but refuse to return.)
-Ragnarok Online (Neither of us really liked it)
-Maple Story (Neither of us liked it)
-Lord of the Rings Online (I couldn't get into it, and too much of the content was pay-based by mini-transactions)
-World of Warcraft (Too expensive, way too much grind for both of us. Very hard to get into at this point)
You should sub for one month for LOTRO then cancel. You will then be a premium player. I play pretty much the entire game for free. I used to sub but not anymore. Sure, I bought Moria and Mirkwood way back when but everything in that content is free for life. You really should give it a chance because what you described at the beginning sounded like LOTRO to me.

if you don't want to pay more then 10 bucks for a sub you can forget P2P MMO's and if you're a competative gamer that doesn't like cash shops you can forget F2P. so i would have to say try another genre.

RoM is nive for a few months but it will get very costly.
FTP does not exist. It is FTP for a few months then you pretty much always have to pay money to enjoy the game. When I play FTP games I assume I will jump from game to game every few months. If you want a steady game PTP is a better bet. It really depends on if the two of you are willing to jump from game to game or not. If you are not willing to jump from game to game avoind RoM. A lot of people will sepnd hundreads of dollars before they know what hit them in a game like RoM. I have never put a penny into a FTP game because I can walk away. You should be careful with FTP games.
Goodluck in your search. I still think Vanguard is a great game in a group and it has everything anyone could want in a game but PvP. The entry price point is great too.

I suggest Star Wars Galaxies or Pirates of the burning sea, which just went F2P with not that much restrictions on F2P accounts.
Star Wars Galaxies

SWG has gone through some tough times about new combat upgrade and has been looked down upon because of it, but its worth it.
As for Pirates of the Burning Sea its very heavy PVP game. For you wife/girl friend class to choose to be a crafter and trading with other ports to make money. Even own a port.
Good luck with the search
