LOTRO vs D&D Online Free?

Hey guys, I am interested in downloading one of these and wanted to ask which is the better free MMO? I tried the LOTRO stress test/alpha and it was sooo slow, but I think it was just the servers. I remember it was really slow/boring at first ala go find x and kill x amount of x.. rather than real exploring etc.. Are either of these really popular since they've gone free or are they both worth a "pass"

    They're completely different.

Both MMOs are targeted to group play.

While LOTRO is a rather standard mmo with standard quests and dungeons. One great thing about LOTRO are the classes: every class is different, but still needed, it's not like every class does the same dps, they have different functions (debuffers, buffers, ccers). If you want to enjoy LOTRO you have to be a LOTR-fan. The best thing about it is running around in middle-earth and meeting characters from the books, if you're into it. If you're into pvp I suggest you to play a different game.

D&D is all about dungeons and dungeons (that's what both D's stand for). If you like dungeons and an action-combat-system, play it. If you're into crafting, exploring and questing...play LOTRO. I don't know much about PvP in D&D, but I guess it's okay.

ya I would much rather just go through alot of dungeons and face monsters etc.. more action rather than running around doing "errands" you know?

Will D&D run on my system, it's quite old.. amd 3500, geforce 6600gt, 2gb ram

You should have no trouble running D&D.  You could run Lotro, but you'd have to scale back the settings on it to minimum (while it is beautiful, it is a resource hog at high settings)

LOTRO is a quiet homely sort of game, where you do do "errands" but its not as simple as that.

D&D Ive never played but from what I hear its better for the PvP[object Window]ers out there who enjoy combat heavy games.

D&D is a very old game and should run on your system.

Actually D&D stands for Dungeons and DRAGONS, but.....you're 100 percent correct in that it SHOULD be Dungeons and Dungeons because that game has a CRAP TON of dungeons. lol  ;)

Myself, I prefer LotRO of the two, but I'm a big fan of the literature, so....kind of suits me better.

I played DDO for a while but couldn't get into the combat and the way the game felt, I originally tried LOTRO and didn't get too far not really giving it a chance... However I went back for free to play and I'm playing it as my #1 game now.  It's a pretty good game in my opinion better then DDO...

From what I hear around the horn, you get more for free in DDO, but if you work hard enough in LOTRO everything needed can be free... That said if u put money into LOTRO as a supplement you'll be quite happy

I like LOTRO best. It is however a slower paced game for the most part. For a more complete world experience and many alternate things to focus on..deeds..crafting...skirmishes..raids..exploration etc...but more turn-based ..cool down combat...then LOTRO. (though they have greatly improved combat since the launch..with smoother animations ..yet it still could be better)

DDO..imo...the character models look better (except elves..nasty looking) they just don't have the variety of gear or appearance/customization that you can get in LOTRO. I hear they are adding the ability to color armors for more customization..so that's good...and you can buy the Half-orc as a race..which kicks arse. The dungeons are nice as well and look better than LOTRO imo. The combat can be twitchy and definitely more fast paced. It is very modular..mostly a few main quest hubs with many...many instanced dungeons and outside areas.(provided you are subbed or purchase them as a free to play/premium)  Don't think they will ever have a world-feel...but it is very fun and sounds like what you prefer.

I've spent much money on both games and now can pretty much play them at my leisure as long as they are still running. My mains are pretty similar for both and I have a ton of enjoyment playing them..the Ranger in DDO and the Hunter in LOTRO (I like bows..what can I say)..the monk is kind of cool in DDO but you have to buy the class I think and the Lore-master is a decent pet class for LOTRO.The thief/burgular in ddo/lotro are good challenging classes to play. Since they're free , try DDO and LOTRO (again) and make the call.

One more thing: When you purchase anything in the store for both games or have ever subscribed to the games in the past you become a premum player...which opens a little more options for you mosty extra character slots and the such.. I had subbed to both so started both with some extra stuff when I went free. My lotro pre-free characters retain all  bank slots and bag slots and since I already purchased the expansions..I have a lot of quest content covered.

Well, you could always go and explroe in LOTRO.

You just have to make a conscious decision to step off of the quest train. I have done a good amount of both my character's levels by exploring and not doing quests.

There are areas that are better for exploring than others but I have discovered some nice areas and even a quest hub or two that I wouldn't have discovered had I just followed the "go here, now go there" quests.

This is not to say that the questing is bad but one needs to know they can make their own decisions.

For my tastes lotro is the better game even though they are both different games.

Hmm .. they are both FREE. Why don't you download BOTH and try them out? I don't see why you need to make a choice.
