well like every game, when you start off you WILL be weak! so you cant really expect everything to be going as the way you expect it. and like what you may have read in the reviews, its pets pets pets! the game is solely based on pets and ofcourse since it IS an MMORPG you do NEED to play with other players. Instances and Dungeons play a big role for you to get what you want and what you need.
so the moment you enter the first town i would highly recommend for you to start making friends.
Dont listen to these people who diss this game. they most probably dont have the patience to grind and make friends to play with other rappelz players.
i have been in and out of this game and a lot has changed! item drops are higher (atleast in my server - oh and pls dont join the PVEonly server, trust me!) monsters in instances are a lot more challenging, and ofcourse new pets (unicorn, nightmare, and ifrit).
anyway, just try it out! its worth it! and if you need help ill help you out up to a certain extent.
This game did get me hooked on it for more than a year but technical issues drove me away. Maybe they've improved on it since then but it was still there a few months ago when I took a peek.
If you love pets, then yes this game is worth trying. When you start out you won't necessarily be weak: you'll just be poor. If you have money when you start out, you'll actually be doing quite a bit of damage.
Anyway, it's basically a grindfest with an excellent pet system (one which I wish other games had) but an even more grindy skill system. The latter part was the problem that drove me to quit.

I played it during closed beta and got bored after a couple of weeks. Later I picked it up a year ago and got bored again in a couple of weeks
Game is not really special. But if you like mind numbing grinds (both quest and monsters) then Rappelz is your game
Oh, look at the other topic here about Rappelz as well: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/209441/READ-THIS-if-u-have-ever-played-rappelz.html
