Today marks the launch of a new era in World of Warcraft, an era of new beginnings, new levels, newly overhauled areas. In short, World of Warcraft will never be the same. Today, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller marks the Cataclysm launch day with some reflections on the game that was and what the changes brought to WoW with Cataclysm mean for him. I am not going to try and talk about what the expansion has to offer. We know all about it. We have known for months. Really what I want to bring up is why Cataclysm is so important to MMOs in 2010. Warcraft is a six year old game. It started off strong in terms of a new MMO in 2004 and 2005. Then it grew huge. It became a cultural phenomenon and started to even break into the main stream. This was a turning point for games and, more importantly, for MMOs. By 2006 Warcraft dominated the market and a host of games were launched to try and grasp some of that glory.

Exactly the same day as MapleStory will bring out their 'Catyclysm' (Big Bang). Funny. Even more funny, as MapleStory is my first MMORPG, I'm sitting here in front of my PC and can not wait to check out the changes and the new world! All my friends play WoW and are having a Cataclysm Release party right now (for 5 days zomg). Poor me, or not?
Someone lvl 85 by Thursday? (chuckle) there was someone lvl 85 4 hours after release, some Paladin Forscience guy.

I couldn't agree more and as a casual gamer, I'm loving the changes they've made. Can't wait to make a goblin and experience some of the new content!
Cataclysm is not the only thing avalible
As of last night que on some servers like Stormreaver is over 1 hour !
I will wait a bid before playing wow again, cata looks great, but at the moment some RL issues are more important. So let's say I'll start playing cata in february? Getting to 85 should take a week or two I guess, if people can do it in less then 6 hours, I can do it casual in 2 weeks

a few comments to the many comments above
- RL > WOW
- Looking forward to cataclysm, my guilds strategy is a cool one, "relax and enjoy the road to 85" then start organizing formal events after we get an idea of what the equipment looks like at 85 and people have had a chance to enjoy the expansion a bit.
- For new players its a great time to jump in as all that uber elite 80 gear is really now gonna be junk compared to the new gear in the expansion. So its a great time to catch up fairly quickly.
- Yup Moon guard also has a massive wait queue, no thanks... (lucky my mains are NOT on moon guard).
- There are going to be 1 kazillion worgen and goblins and those zones are gonna be ugly to play in.
Made a Worgen Female Fury Warrior myself... its so fun right now! Like.. seriously epic... haha total ownage!
Just got bak into the game for xpac (havent played for 3months) seeing all the changes is so win.
Wow is not my game of choice but.
Have fun guys, It's always nice to get new content added to the game you like.

I've been having lots of fun playing today. Never really doubted that. It's long term that worries me. At the rate the XP bar is going, I'm guessing I'll hit 85 at the end of the week or early next week at the most... and I'm taking my time reading the quests and enjoying the scenery. Those dailies, raids and heroics better be interesting if Blizzard intends to keep the pace they've kept throughout WOTLK in terms of releasing new content.

People have been hitting 85 all day on the server that i am playing on. I was debating on going out getting the xpac, but after seeing how fast people were hitting lvl cap i kinda decided against it now. The Cata greens are just stupid, if you just got your full T10 epics might as well get ready to replace them as soon as you go to the AH or start questing in the new zones. I think i'll stick with WoTLK until some of the newer 2011 mmos come out
They have to introduce new, better gear at every expansion to help you adapt to the difficulty and change. It's the same as buying a new car in 2000 only to realize now that...it's not new. If/when I come back, I'll be upgrading from T4/5 level to whatever there is to offer (not to mention 15 levels instead of 5). I think it's necessary and expected at every new expansion. Not only that, they want people to not only upgrade those epics, enjoy the new zones and start new racial characters. It does stink a little that you're getting rid of your Lich King epics that took awhile to get, but you've probably had 'em awhile now, so they're old, rusty, and old news. We all want change, so you can't have one without the other. Enjoy Cata!

Right now im playing aion and really enjoying it, our server were so busy last night, i could hardly get in a hit on the poor ellies.. wow is just too old....
this is so sick and messed up - having party cuz the pixels on ur computer are being updated and you payed with your car for this crap.... trying to become the highest level as soon as its released... like it will help you somehow in live... this is retarded... people really need to delete their game and go live in real live

So what are you doing on an mmo forum?
Level 1-60 was fun...after that not too fun. plus each expansion should have been like 20 level increase and hard to attain. Like Diablo 2. After a certain level you need like "billions" of exp points to reach next level. WOW: That game is just a wash even though it looks pretty. If I even play it again I will just start from level 1 again but not today. Thanks for the time but there are other games to explore. Peace. Happy Holidays. God bless.
