Rift: Second Beta Event Dated

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Trion Worlds and the Rift development team have announced the second closed beta event. Called "Guardians of the Vigil", the event is set to begin on December 17th and end on December 20th. Players will have access to levels 1-20.

Players will be reborn as Ascended souls of the Vigil, prophesized to put an end to the tyrant Aedraxis and his plan to sacrifice the world to Regulos. Save the forest of Silverwood from the war between fiery minions of chaos and the corrupted followers of the elven prince Hylas. Venture into the Realm of the Fae to break the hold that Greenscale’s lieutenant Lord Twyl has over the ancient home of the elves.

“Guardians of the Vigil” will be localized for English, French and German speaking territories.

Sign up for beta testing here.

I don't think they will be able to do anything drastic in two weeks.

Changing a game in any direction not only requires changing content but also testing that content.

It will take longer for them to take people's suggestions and actually implement some of them.

Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Agree it takes atleast 2 weeks to go over all the collected data let alone do any changes.  The only testing here is stress testing.  They seem to be rushing things a bit,  I wonder why.

The most they could do is improve how they run the second stress test in terms of server numbers and tweaking game mechanics that and a few technical bug fixes.Stress testing is not only for stressing hardware but gameplay mechnaics to expose flaws. There may be content fixes based on the first test but since the second test involves new content assumedly, people who were/are in both won't see those.

I vaguely remember WISH having an odd beta schedule.  They had an initial, small stage late alpha/early beta.  They then went for a series of beta weeks/weekends six - eight months out from their intended release.

As someone mentioned, I hope these events aren't a sign that Trion is shooting for a early 2011 release and hope they take the time to make Rift a standout game.  I almost hope they finish up with these beta events and go into a 4-6 month development cycle where they iterate, polish up, smoothen out any rough spots.

It took almost 8 months for BHS to go from CB3 to stress test of there Launch client and that is with nearly 200 developers.  Lets see how Trion Worlds handles it.

We'll see. At this point, I don't hold alot of hope.

  • SoraksisSoraksis Member UncommonPosts: 294

Yeah but you guys are forgetting that this is only a CB1  series of events.  3 weekends in Dec.  so once all this is done they could very well take it down for a month or two before starting any more phases of beta which would indeed give them the time they need to make whatever changes are deemed necessary.  So far as i have found they have not announced any kind of actual release date just the vague exptected 2011.  So as far as we know it could be Dec of 2011 before its ready.  I am going to give them the benifit of the doubt and not check the this game fails box yet.

You dont do this kind of closed beta, with so much advertising, if you are not launching after that, is burning money for nothing. They are making prerelease hype. In my opinion, they are releasing soon. After the 3 closed betas they will do a big open beta and after that the game will go live.

    Thats what I'm afraid of.

Your absolutely wrong they havent burned any money on this at all.  Trion hasnt put up any money on advertising for this at all.  All they did was give some webistes keys to a Phase 1 Closed Beta series of Weekend Events.  The websites that got the keys did all the advertising on their own sites which didnt cost Trion a dime.   And I have never seen a beta only do 9 days of phase 1 testing then release your out of your mind if you think thats how it works.  The dont even go into open beta after this.  what they are doing is simply testing each side working out some kinks getting data per faction and classes then back to the drawing board for some work and fixes then Phase 2 starts.  No one in the history of AAA MMO's have ever gone into an open beta or release after a Phase 1 Closed Beta test, so there is no evidence or reason to even think Trion will be the first.

Hopefully, they've realized by now that some people lost interest in this game and they're going to send out more invites.

I think they see it as a cheap way to go toe on toe with GW2 hype wise.

But I don't think they will release it after just 3 tests. They will have 1 test for each starting area first. Then they must at least have 1 PvP test and 1 test for higher areas. That is 4 tests but I also think they will have a huge stress test, at least a test for dungeons and group dynamics and probably a few more.

Early spring might be a possible release date, but with your thinking it should be a few weeks after X-mas and that is very unlikely unless they already tested the entire game internally and just need to stress test the servers, GW2 is actually doing that but I don't think Trion is even if both teams seems to have spent a lot more work in internal tests than most other games.

Of course if they actually had a 2-3 months open beta you might actually be right but I don't think they will. But a long open beta works, I been in a few of those like Lineage that were several months, not the best example since the game already was up and running in Korea but still.

I haven't played a MMO for a few years and I really enjoyed Rift so far, it's very social, fun, and doesn't require a bachelor to play.

However, they really need to work on the fun factor because GW2 will totally steal the crap out of their playerbase if they don't.

That vid makes you think they are  about to go live. Yet no release date. Kinda weird...

Guild wars will lack the class custimization, which for me is a huge factor that drew me to Rift.  I'll give Gw2 a shot, and I think it looks great, but it's far from perfect.  I'm not a big fan of the holy trinity, but that's another factor.  Many people, for whatever reason, really like that.  GW2 has tossed that out the window.

yeah I really don't like that tbh. I feel that MMOs are so cooperative because of that. however, can Guild Wars 2 pull it off, so that no more there shall be a trinity system, and still be fun?

We shall wait and see. The way I see it right now, Rift is actually starting to prove rather than talk and talk, and talk. GW2 is like an isolated anti-social cloud; they're releases and news are far from substantial.

I am excited. GW2 and Tera do look really good, but they are more for the twitch gammers.  Rifts is more for the roleplayer.  Sure it is nothing new, but it is best of all the most popular mmo's, without the bugs.

I am going to be so hooked on this game.

The closed beta weekends are stress tests in the big picture but also feedback is still vitally important. They stated this themselves. Alpha is the "real beta" and has been going on for a bit. Also read that they are planning an early 2011 release.
