Trying to start playing again- need help

92165449216544 Member Posts: 1,904

I've been trying to figure out how to download the FFXI client and after some searching, it seemed I would either need to rebuy or download from torrent. I decided to buy the ultimate collection on steam for $9.99. But my download speeds are like 90 kb/sec and I'm on a 7mbps cable connection. I'm thinking I should have just torrented it.

But Im wondering if Im going to be forced to either play the fresh account, or resubscribe for an additional $12.99 or however much the monthly is now, and then only find out that my character has been deleted. I had a level 36 or so Mithra Dark Knight with lvl 30 warrior subjob or something. I think I had a decent bit of gil on the account too. Id prefer to get this character back if possible, but I dont want to spend money and find out that I dont have the character any more. Also I dont have the newer xpacs on that account, but I did just buy the ultimate collection.

Can I add the collection I just bought to my preexisting account? Sorry if this is confusing...

I might just roll a fresh taru white mage. But Im not sure if I want to redo the early levels when it will be hard to find groups. On the other hand I havent played for a couple years and I will be too noob to play in the level 30+ zones, especially as a DK where I remember it was easy to pull aggro off main tank.

Thanks for any help.

So long as you remember your account info, your character should still be there and you just have to reactivate it. You would also just need to register the expansion packs Content ID's. Then you'd be ready to roll. Just be aware that if you reactivate your account before the end of the month, you will be charged for the whole month. If you don't want that to happen, wait until the begining of next month.

Don't worry about starting fresh. All you have to do is get used to the game again.  Shouldn't be that bad. I hope that helps.

Edited out my post because whenever I use apostrophes I get [object Window] in replacement.

So they charge by the month and not the day in which you subscribe? Thats pretty lame...

The ultimate expansion doesnt come with a free 30 days or anything?

    Thanks for the help!

The free 30 days only works if it's a fresh account. But yeah, it's the whole month if you reactivate. I guess the reason is, if you cancel any time during the month say after you were billed, you can still play for the rest of the month until the next billing cycle.

So I'm not really sure if it was worthing trying to resubscribe. Here's the stuff I've had to do.

    1. Buy the Ultimate Collection for $9.99 on steam.

    2. Download game. Total download time on steam: ~12 hours.

    3. Once I had game installed I tried to log into playonline with my account info. I've used the same account info since I first bought the game and had it written down in the game manual. First thing that playonline tells me is "Invalid Playonline ID or password." I tried to get my password sent to my email and sent int a request four times. I never received one email at my confirmed email account.

I finally tried to manually click the keyboard box to enter in my info and that worked. I guess I can't use my keyboard anymore lol?

    4. Now I had to reactivate my account and update my information. This took ~30 minutes just to navigate the browser, update info, and confirm my credit card works through another internet browser. Then I entered in my CD registration key to load in all expansions.

    5. Finally once I was done with all of this I thought I would actually get to play. I click Final Fantasy 11 and it tells me I have no content ID. I once more have to reactivate my ID and finalize my $12.95 payment.

    6. I try to load into the game and alas! I have to install a mega size patch! I've been updating for around 20 minutes now and I'm at 0% (granted I only have a 3mbps connection.) Still, this is absolutely ridiculous.

I feel like I'm trying to play FFXIV. I'm assuming that the game will take around 24 hours to download. I'm not sure if I should have bothered.

Yeah, POL can sorta be a pain. Although, the weird thing about having to use the onscreen keyboard is just weird. I like never use that.

There is just no getting around the speed of the patches, unless you use torrents or something I guess. It takes a while to patch, but it's worth it. I think the last time I had to patch on a slow connection, it took over 8 hours. Don't let that get you down. You made it this far, why stop now?

The on screen keyboard is to fight keyloggers. You should use it... or not. It's your decision.

The patch you need is probably a large one,so will take awhile.I am not sure if you finalized your payment methods but you will need to register your CC and have it verified, which is a real pain in the ass unless you live in the USA.Took me about 10 tries to get my card to finally go through their botchy system.

Yes it is worth it to just d/l while doing something else, you are getting the best game design in the MMORPG genre so it is worth it.Your mithra DK is a good build,i would deff go that route and unlock /dancer for soloing.BTW i assure you the d/l is a decent speed,it is just that Square is always adding a lot of things to the game.so patching is a good thing, means your getting more content.Pretty soon there will be a Christmas update.BTW your 3 mb d/l connection is plenty fast, there are no sites on the internet offering more than maybe Microsoft at 600kb or so,most are only around 200-500.

I would keep my accounts open all the time if Square wasn't so cheap and offered package deals for multi boxing/extra accounts.

Well now I'm mainly worried about everyone saying you will have to let go of your social life to play this game. I'm comfortable playing 4 hours a day 5 days a week but nothing more than that. I have school/work/and a girlfriend and I don't want to be spending 50 hours a week just to gain levels.

I've played FFXI up to level 36 mithra dark knight which wasn't very hard. But I'm sure level 50+ is much more difficult.

The main reason why I wanted to resubscribe was to experience some of the story line and get back into a good community.

I have a 25mbit connection.. and I am still patching.. downloaded the game yesterday (took an hour).

Then I used like 30min just to register.

And when I finally thought I could play, there was like 20000files to download.. @ 70 % now. been patching for 6hours..

And my average download speed is 2.9mb/s

    Am I doint something wrong?

Nope. Just keep running the updates. They take forever.

Well there are a group of us on Titan that are only interested in enjoying all the game's content and having fun experiencing FFXI in all its glory rather than grind grind grind to cap so you can do the same instances over and over for a few pieces of armor. If you are looking for some good friends and just a casual progression as our lives allow let me know. Send me a message on this forum. Would love to have you.

You can play FFXI and definitely make progress playing 4 hours a day 5 days a week. Just set your expectations realistically to that amount of time, and you'll be fine. The problem only arises when people with 20 hours to play expect to progress the same as people with 40, etc. Ain't gonna happen, in any game.

I don't know when you last played, but they've made a lot of changes to the game in the last year or two, making it a bit easier to level up, even as a new player.

Anyways... If you remember playing XI the last time,t hen all the maneuvering through PoL shouldn't come as a surprise. That software is a pain in the ass even for people who've played the game for years lol.
