If You Liked WoTLK, You'll Love Cataclysm

Big_DataBig_Data Member UncommonPosts: 48

Unfortunatly, I was not a big fan of Wrath of the Lich King.

In full disclosure, I have only been playing Cataclysm for a few days, and am almost at level 82.  To me, the game seems very linear for an MMO, with most of the questing phased so you have to complete a quest hub to move to the next.

Instances are interesting so far, though for now they are still an 'round up the mobs and AOE' affair.  Even on day 1 I am experiencing the "gear grind" with folks in the random dungeons yelling "Press Esc., skip the cinematic so we can clear faster!".

With how fast leveling has been so far (feels much faster then Lich King or TBC), it appears that Blizzard is banking on the fact that folks will want to level alts through the new Azeroth.  I started a Goblin, and can say that that starting zone is pretty entertaining.

Overall, I think that if you were happy with where WoW was at during the last expansion, this will be fun for you.  If you were starting to get bored with Warcraft, I don't think that there is enough "new" right out of the box to keep your interest.

Cheers!

Hmm... i read from forums that instances in cata gona be focus on cc, maybe its endgame?

Trying to carry on my 80 but too many ppl, so like you i roll a goblin, and yes its quite funny the starting area.

Gona try out the worgen too, but still undecided which class to roll, hmm....

But so far i like it

Replace your new blue weapon with a fishing pole. I did this accidently in Stranglethorn and did some kill x quests with my druid cat, until I intented to fish again and wondered why I already had equipped the fishing pole.

Your doing it wrong. I haven't played WOW in over 4 years, so I rerolled on a new server, created a brand new Tauren Warrior and am now working through the redesigned starter area.

With no experience to draw from since vanilla WOW days its actually proving to be quite entertaining.

I figure it will keep me busy until something new comes avaible next year.

My New Year's resolution...find fun where I can in the current games.

WoW hasent done anything ground braking new since vanilla. nobody is shocked that it's the same old thing, we all knew it was going to be. we all like it to be so.

you level only to get to end game so  you can farm dungeons, farm raids,  farm battle grounds, you try for arena rating, and now bg rating.

the days of the "jorney" ,as in slow leveling filled with innovative story driven content that wraps you like a book, is long gone. this game is for those wanting to log on a few hours a week and do a quick dungeon, battle ground, or some questing. WoW is the definition of theme park mmo, and all it does is be the best at it. there is just no other theme park game quite as fun, massive and almost flawless out there. just see it for what it is, dont take it seriously and you will have much more fun.

as for myself i'm enjoying Cata quite a bit, but then again i had very low expectations. the new zones are nice looking, many quests are actually quirky fun and the levelling is fast enough.

I'm wondering since I haven't played yet... How geared was your group? At this stage of the game, it is possible that your group was geared for T9-T10, making the content trivial?

sorry to clearly prove you wrong, but i have played Cata and am almost at level 85. perhaps haven't played as clearly as you have but still played....clearly. just being clear here. clearly clear.

yes i am one of the 99%, then again i mostly enjoy pvp not pve.

Well to be honest its not long to hit 85 but from what I've heard and seen the new 5 mans are very hard took my friend and his group, ppl who are elitiest, 5 hours to just do one heroic dungeon. That was after a few days of doing regular dungeons just to get enough gear to attempt the heroics.

  • JakdstripperJakdstripper Member RarePosts: 2,410

i'm actually happy to hear this. about time heroic dungeons are .....well, heroicly difficult.

  • Big_DataBig_Data Member UncommonPosts: 48

I am glad to hear heroic are challenging.  They were when the were first introduced in TBC, but they were usually pretty easy in Wrath.

My group probably was over-geared for the instance, but my point was less about ease up front, and more about the culture of WoW already focused on clearing as fast as possible, so after  months of badge/ JP grinding I am one day into the new expansion and am doing the same thing, just in different places.

To be clear, I am not complaining about how the expansion didn't revolutionize the game, I knew that wasn't the plan Blizzard had.

My only conclusion is that if you were getting bored with WoW during Lich King, Cataclysm won't do much to change that.

What if you didn't like WOTLK because it made the game to casual and the end game a joke?

I think Cataclysm is geared up front to a more casual audience.  Blizzard knows that every year there is a new crop of young folks that could start playing for the first time, and the more accessible the game is, the more likely they will become long time customers.

Not being 85, I can't comment on the end-game, but my assumption is that it will be more difficult and take longer than end game at Lich King at release (which was a joke).

  • generals3generals3 Member Posts: 3,307

I actually wonder, being someone who joined up at WoTLK but stopped because it was becoming ludicruously easy and tedious at the same time (to elaborate: the normal modes were piss easy and in playing hard modes just felt too repetitive as you needed gear from the normal modes to even be able to play em. So basically you had to do twice the same in order to be challenged) would i be able to enjoy Cataclysm?

And additionally how are the talent trees? from what i read and expect they're major crappiness of doom but since i didn't test em i don't know for sure.

In Lich King, there were areas you could skip in the progression tree because the initial tier was so easy (level 79's clearing Naxx, for example).  In Cataclysm, the progression is much more like TBC, so I think you will end up grinding instances more than in Lich King.

That said, I haven't run the instances much, so if you find them fun, you won't mind running them over and over.

As for the talent trees, this is another example of Blizzard making the game more accessable; less choices, have to stick to one tree mostly, etc.  I think the tree's themselves are better overall than the bloated mess they were in Lich King.

At the end of the day, you have to give it a try to know for sure.  My sense is that if the direction WoW took after TBC wasn't to your tastes, all Cataclysm did was expand and polish that direction.

For me, it was a good time to find a new game to waste my time in.

  • generals3generals3 Member Posts: 3,307

heh , i know testing it would be the best way to find out but i'd prefer to avoid paying for a game which might end up being very disapointing. But on the other hand i might also miss a game that could have provided me some fun.

I guess i'll just wait a bit more and see what people say about the end content and such.

     I agree.

The good: the content is harder. Certainly the dungeons and even the open world. In Epics 264+ the first levels are a walk in the park, but I do also have a level 79 PvP Rogue, which just dinged 80 some 3 days ago and with only having some pvp blues to wear I need to vanish A LOT. Can only pull one mob at the time. Best to ignore the underwater worlds because of those 3D threads with such a low character.

So those fresh 80's in  lvl 78 greenies and low blues, it is attention time again. With the main  in the dungeons I died more than in the previous 12 months of Wotlk combined.

The bad: some people ARE assholes. More so than in Wotlk. They drop a group far more often and so it is back to guildies or doing a dungeon for 2 hours until it can be completed.

I have the impression the assholes came back to WOW in these last few days.

So no, this is not Wotlk.

Last remark: the tuning of the lower levels was not done right: you out level the zones too fast. 25% nerf would be welcomed in killing mobs to even out your level with the zone's quest design. The upper levels 80+ are well tuned (odd...).

Is the content actually "harder" or just takes more time to complete.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

  • djazzydjazzy Member Posts: 3,578

Hyjal and Vashj'ir the mobs are still pretty easy. Once you get to Deepholm and beyond the mobs hit a lot harder.

  • generals3generals3 Member Posts: 3,307

and is there anyone who has experienced the end game content who could comment on that?

A little too early to talk about end game content. But it looks no different than it has been, raid for gear, repeat ad nauseam.

Just looked at the Tauren starter area your right it is a lot different not sure about the others though . I played a nelf and that was pretty much the same as a i remember it . I've been levelin through the shattering . theres some interesting bits in it but I would say you need to have had a 3-4 year break to appreciate it . Its very similar to me after 18 month or so. .Not that its bad it just leaves you a little cold and thinking this has'nt changed that much .

So over the next weeks/months they will become doable, gear will not be so harsh anymore. But they'll never really be "easy". I've only done 2 heroics and a half and...wow. every ingle boss has 1-2 extra abilities that make them a lot harder compared to normal.

Believe me, in time they will become very easy. They may be more challenging than before, but once everyone starts to learn the mechanics and so on, they will become a walk in the park. You'll still need to be alert though.

I must be one of those greedy people that can't get enough "new," because I'm lvl 81 on my main, my worgen is 14, and my goblin is 10 and I'm bored shitless already.

There is no WAY that I'm taking all of my 80s through this content, and as far as my goblin and worgen go.....eventually it will be back to the same old quests and zones and yes....back to level through Outlands and Northrend.....AGAIN.  No thank you.

I think I really am one of those people that just cannot play this game any more, but.....after saying that just months ago on these very forums, I decided that I should cut Blizzard some slack and give it a try anyway.  Well....I just can't muster up any more "want to," it seems, no matter how hard I try.

Regardless of what some people think......you CAN actually completely burn out on a game.  I think I've learned my lesson this time.  Once I'm pretty sure I'm burnt out......I AM, and need to just pay attention to that inner voice that tells me, "Run....run far away and do NOT go back to this game."  Next time....I will be more apt to LISTEN to it.
