Well it seems pretty much confirmed from SoE in an interview.At first i thought maybe he was talking about the agency but he used the word known franchise and then answered a question on the name been planetside next.
There been speculation of a sequel for over 1 yr but never any announcement.So does this mean SoE will be launching 3 mmo in 3 months.DC univerise due out very soon and so is the agency.

So joy for all you mmofps fans out there who want a proper first person shooter against hundreds of people.Hopefully the public will support this as we desperately need a mmofps .

This just confirms the game will suck.
1. DC Universe online is plain bad.
2. The Agency and DC Universe proves their shift to consoles.
3. Rushed without hardly a mention, can't warrant any hype or advertising then.

To me that means EQ2 wasn't the game Everquest players wanted, so they should have called it Everquest "Next" or whatever to imply it's a totally different beast and it appeals to different people. Well they've called Planetside 2, Planetside Next because it'll be totally different and not what Planetside lovers want.
I reckon it'll be some dumbed down instanced up console FPS where the max players is like 24 in one area. It could be something like MAG where they say 256 players, in reality it's a much smaller number but you fight for the same objective.
Whatever happens I bet it isn't that massive thousand players on one island with vehicles and being totally open that us Planetside players wanted.
While it would really be nice to see a new, fresh version of Planetside released, I am afraid that SOE probably does not have the exact thing in mind as all of the fans. At this point, anything that is developed by SOE is probably just another attempt at cashing in on one of their licenses.
It's SOE. No way I am getting again in any game remotely related to this company.
With a crazy release window like this, I will simply HAVE TO play it before I commit. They had better offer an open beta or else I can't say I'll touch this.

I have doubts whether they will be releasing DCUO and a new Planetside game so close together but it wouldn't surprise me if Planetside Next turned out to be a half decent game.
Don't mix up Publisher and Studios.
Considering the poor handling of Planetside in its decline, i'll want to test Planetside next before I go in.

So lets see.... This is probably just:
1) A reskin of the original Planetside. Most probably using the Unreal Engine.
2) Free to play.
Not that I object to either of those things mind you. But I'm not going to get excited about this until I get more information. Especially considering that we have a Tribes MMO in the works and Firefall on the pad and awaiting launch right now.
SOE just announced that The Agency is delayed until late 2011.
The problem with EQ2 was not the name. Suggesting that the name of the game was the problem implies that players were really at fault for expecting something else. It could have been called EQ Whatever and little to nothing would have changed.
Perhaps I have my times mixed up, but didn't soe just ask players this year what they would want in planetside 2? That doesn't leave a lot of time to actually make a game if they plan on releasing next march.

they're talking now a launch of planetside in 2 in 3 months, without a gameplay vid, confirmed features, website, beta anything? this was the problem with the first one, awesome game..for the first like year or 2... but nobody knew about it.
If this is really planetside 2 I hope they kickup the marketing.
and yea it would have to likly be on a new engine, they dont have the development/editing tools that PS was devloped on aymore(I dont know why) but thats what they say.
I fucking hope its not on the unreal engine, the good thing about PS was you could play anywhere in the world on whatever server. Not really possible on most other engines/netcode configuratins

Yes it's SOE, Yes it's probably going to be rushed but I for one do not care as Planetside 2/Next is a game I'm going to buy without a doubt.

I have been pretty impressed by SOE’s willingness to hold DCU back until it’s polished. That is no guarantee that they will do the same for Planetside but one can hope that they have learned the value of finishing a game before it’s released.

Agreed. That company makes bad decisions in so many ways. And having Smedley doing anything but cleaning toilets is one of them. Does he actually think that a different name for EQ2 would have made a difference?

Why confirmation ? It is a loveletter to the Planetside glory days and a link to the escapist article.
Because he mentions and quotes (but strangely does not link) the thread on the PlanetSide forums in which Virrago (PlanetSide Senior CSR) confirms it. It's near the bottom of page 2.

Actually there was a link to the forum post at the bottom of the article where he quotes his sources right next to the link to the escapist article.Thank you for pointing that out for Abye I guess he missed that and the quote hehe.
I walked away from SOE after SWG NGE and then MxO. I was ALMOST pulled back in when they announced The Agency but since it has now been dumbed down to mostly a 3PS, I have no interest. Planetside was decent enough but it too suffered from SOE interference. I just don't see Planetside 2 being half the game that the starting version of Planetside was.

There were so many ways to improve that game- but it was probably a full decade ahead of it's time. Consoles drive gaming now anyways. Nothing moves forward until consoles can do it too.
When I think about how much the look and feel of games changed from 00-05, and in stark contrast, how little they've changed post xbawks (05-now)- i throw up in my mouth a little.
