Archer review from the korean stress test.

Me posing on a mountain, gotta love unreal engine <3

As you read before, i leveled my archer in the korean servers to lvl 21. So I

decided to write a small class review about how i feel about the class overall.

Skills

First of all, the archer has received so much honey and love from the Bluehole studios development team that i have to /high5 them folks. Great job for making a versatile, strong but yet fragile dps class from the archer.

New skills ( I dont have the names for them ) include the good old chuck norris roundhouse kick combo stun, jumpshot and the rapid shot. I think i could have gotten the rain of arrows skill at 22, atleast there was 3 new skills ( in korean language) that i didnt have yet. Also there was 2 traps, a aoe poison trap and an aoe slow trap. The traps were a little ineffective at early levels, but maybe the higher ranks of the skill scale better, time will show.

There was also a secondary penetration shot, i used it mostly as a combo move after the first penetration shot. I found the skill combo system very likeable, yet i didnt use spacebar much because of the server side lag. I ended up jumping more than launching vital skills at the monsters. With the regular buttons i didnt have that problem. This is also an issue that you should be aware of when you select servers. Eu/Na haters should understand the possible problems with gameplay if you play on a different continent.

Style of play

As the people who followed my adventures in the lands of Arborea noticed that i used a quite weird playstyle for the archer. I ended up pulling mobs with either penetration shot or multishot -> lay trap -> herd the pack mobs to a tight pack -> do the roundhouse stun combo -> jumpshot -> multishot/rapid shot and finish them off with regular attacks. This was so much fun that it made me very very impressed And afterall, this comment is from an old Lineage 2 / wow / aion / ragnarok / fgt veteran. I soloed the lvl 23 frog boss in the swamp area on the second attempt, it hit me for like 3000 dmg, my max hp was at 4320 or something like that. That only shows that if you take use of your classes abilities, you are able to solo even really hard monsters. This concerns all the classes. I find it very lovely that Tera feels more of a player skill based game, than an item based game. Thats a very very huge bonus for the people who have the competetive spirit, when it comes to mmo or pvp games.

Problems

As i stated before, playing on a server located on the other side of the world, the lag can cause weird problems, but i do not believe this will concern eu/na as much as compared to my Finland -> Korea latency. Thats a different world.

Also i said before that the archer traps felt a bit weak, this is something that is easy to fix when there are enough people at maxed levels and have had a good go at the class. PVP wise the archer feels awesome, atleast lancer or a warrior hardly could catch me, but if they did... It hurt So you really gotta have some reflexes in this game, spiced up with some strategic thinking.

The maaaaaaaaaajor concern for me was that my playstyle caused me running out of mana all the time, i didnt use potions or campfires because im a cheapskate when it comes to farming money in mmo games. I quess the manaregeneration can be bearable with proper gems in your gear. I just picked random gems because i couldnt read the tooltips.

Scapes and bromag, you know what all want. Can we have it before xmas

Its seems like the archer is set up to be a pretty powerful class. What was the biggest down side to playing a archer?

The Archer's weakness, like for all ranged classes, actually lies in how well the player aims.

I haven't played since the FGT, which was a very early client build, but back then the Archer had maybe two skills at most that were tracking. This means the projectiles shot out of the bow would actually follow the target for impact. All other skills had to be manually aimed though. Projectiles also have different speeds, and you do have to lead your targets when you aim. This is especially true for Priests who probably have the slowest projectiles of all ranged classes.

Melee classes have a much easier time aiming because their weapon swings often affect a small cone in front of them. Of course, fighting in point blank range also has the advantage of it being difficult to actually miss.

Essentially, ranged classes are limited in their aim, and melee classes are limited in their range. This allows for skilled players to distinguish themselves by either aiming well as a ranged player, or moving effectively as a melee character. That's the cool thing about TERA's combat system; by allowing the player so much control over combat, the system actually becomes, in my opinion, extraordinarily simple to balance.
