My New Year's Resolution - Fun is where you make it

KyleranKyleran Member LegendaryPosts: 44,071

Yep, its that time of year again, and I've decided to do something different for 2011.

It seems there's a good chance we'll see between 3-6 major titles released next year and while I confess, none of them are really being built along the lines of "my perfect" game, but if I'm honest with myself, I'm sure I can find some fun in just about every title.

2010 was a rough year, I had high hopes that I'd find something new, and while I had a good time in EVE, after 3 years its just time for me to do something different.

So its really up to me then, right?  Change my attitude, stop focusing on what games lack, and focus on what I like about each new title and see what they're all about.

So in the spirit of this new philosophy, I downloaded and intalled Cataclysm and reactived an account that I shut down over 4 years ago.  It only has a single level 60 Paladin on it, (my son and his friends took over my other 2 WOW accounts) and I rerolled on a new low pop server and am leveling up a warrior. ( a class I've never mastered in any game)

And while I'm not marching towards an end game goal of conquering the raid instances, its OK since this is more of a placeholder, something to have fun until my next game comes along. (which is how I'm going to approach all future MMO's, not as some sort of investment, but just a game I play until the next one comes along.)

I think I'll be happier that way.

But that doesn't mean I won't be actively engaged in forums debating the next game coming out, forum PVP is my favorite kind after all so I'll still be around.

Happy Holidays and let's hope for a great 2011.

(because the world comes to an end in 2012 don't you know) image

All my time of this forum, and reading your post, I rarely, if ever disagree with you. It is scary how often we are on the exact same page. Too often do we expect too much out of a game. I think we all get spoiled a little bit on our game that we just love for 6 months and all the fond memories. I think back to WAR and AION, although I only played them for a few months, I truly enjoyed my time playing them when I did.

    They all are just games.

WoW is fun for what it is, story driven content.

I'm having fun leveling up a goblin rogue at the moment.

WoW is a game that has never taken its self very seriously.

I'd be interested in hearing your impression of it OP.

Aion, AOC and WAR are really good games regardless of what people say.People need to stop listening to all these unhappy haters and start having fun. The OP is right and I wish him the best.

Brilliant thread! I can't help but think that other people's impression of games effect others, especially on a forum like this one. The focus on what current MMO's are doing wrong instead of what they are doing right is what ruins it for most, a few weeks ago I was planning on a revist to WAR, a game I played all the way through its beta and about 3 months of release. T2 keep sieges were loads of fun. But now that Ive taken a look on their forum, you have people saying that the "game is dead in anything but t1 or t4". It just doesnt sound fun anymore.

Completely agree Kyl, the game is about having fun, not about being the best ever. Too often we get hung up on what is best or new and forget what is fun.

Therefore i'm trying to take a different approach as we near the holiday season and go back to what made me get into games in the first place.  Enjoying them for what they are instead of what i think they should be.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

This will definitely be one of my resolutions too as I've noticed I just got too much into listening to other people's thoughts and opinions that mine have been corrupted by them. One of the key points for me will be commitment, most games i don't play because of end game or what not but then I'm ignoring a whole wealth of good content before it which I actually enjoy so I''m gonna play for the journey and as soon as I hit end game I'll switch to another game in a few days after I've seen what end game holds for a bit. Also with so many good games coming out I should have more than enough to keep me busy!

Glad to see others agree even though its not a very controversal topic, more like common sense I suppose.

So far my new journey into WOW has been pretty good.  Leveling a Tauren Warrior (because I always felt they made the most imposing Warriors) and have him at level 21 in my first week.

Since I haven't played in a while, (and only had 1 horde 60 back in the day) its been a pretty fresh experience for me, though if people have been playing WOW steadily I'd recommend playing one of the newer races because the Tauren starter areas weren't really revamped all that much.  (and, if you want your level 20 mount to be a go-cart, roll a goblin)

I went with the Warrior for a couple of reasons, one, I've never really mastered this class in any game, and 2nd, I prefer to be in central roles and not just part of the DPS squad.  Already have done healing and other magic classes, so this seemed logical.

I found some of the new content to be quite fun, and a bit different than I expected.  While SWTOR may be bringing us storylines, WOW's new quest lines are pretty engaging stories if you take the time to read them and where they are leading you so I'm not displeased overall.

So basically I'm using my time in WOW to learn a new MMORPG role (since I don't believe tanking is every truely going to go away in every game) and explore the new content.  I doubt I'll  get into the gear grind mill at end game, more likely to level up another character or two in the new races (never got a hunter to max level either) and by then, something new should have come along to spend time in.

Very nice post OP!  This is something others need to do also. Everyone has turned to critical about everything and seem to want to find things to pick at about games and I'm not sure how this evolved.

The wife and I resently went back to Lotro after couple of years away and we've been trying to do the same thing. Just focusing on the good of the game. Taking our time and not leveling fast, harvest, crafting, whatever!  lol   I'm actually enjoying the game more than I did in the early days.

I wish you luck and all others that try to put the neg. behind them and just let themselves enjoy online games again.

Heh good one OP my early new years resolution has been to stop beta testing games I have a genuine interest in.

eg GW2 TOR Tera i have not applied to beta nor will take up the sure to come fileplanet beta's etc I want a MMO to be a voyage of discovery again and not a I've already done this for 5 month whilst the game was buggy as hell.

I am also trying not to read info on these MMO's as well as not visit specific forums for them although in the case of TOR that is providing very difficult to do.

I had a similar resolution to yourself 2009 and i really enjoyed that year when not comparing everything to pre-cu SWG although the games that year did provide me a certain degree of fun none have quite managed to hold me but i did enjoy them a hell of a lot more than I probably would have.
