So, finals are done and I can finally sit back, relax, and enjoy my winter break. Luckily, I will be living with my girlfriend for most of the break. I am looking for an MMO we can play together.
The game must: be quest oriented, not be pvp driven, and be group friendly.
I have already attempted to play World of Warcraft with her, and while she enjoyed it until about level 50 (with the RAF bonus), it got old fast for her. So far, she has enjoyed Wizards 101 the most; however, I did not exactly enjoy Wizards as much as her..although on a side note it is a surprisingly good game.
I would prefer if I did not have to spend money on buying the boxed versions of the game AND a monthly fee of the game. I was thinking we could try out Guild Wars, as that seems to be pretty girlfrindliesh. One last thing, our laptops for school are not exactly high-powered machines (inspiron 1525). Ryzom is the pretty much the limit when it comes to performance.
Thanks all

I fear you might find Guild Wars to "PvP Driven". As far as a suggestion... what about Runes of Magic? It is very WoWlike though, but should run on your comps.
EDIT: actually I suggest getting her on this site and looking through the game list together. Looking at reviews and player comments. Get a list of 5 games you want to check out and then look at those games websites and videos of them on youtube. Then make a desicion together.
I am assuming from your note that Guild Wars might be girlfriend-li-ish and her liking Wizard 101 that she is not an experienced gamer. If I am wrong about that, ignore the following...
I recently had an old friend move back from Europe and he's staying with me for a while. He thought Warhammer looked awesome and I let him try it a little on an alt. While he is computer savy and a smart guy (speaks 3 languages fluently) he got trounced repeatedly in WAR.
So...
We tried a couple other games, CoH, LotRO...CoH also got too complicated for his tastes pretty quick,he had too much trouble finding mobs that ran away and running around corners at super speed into groups.
We've had the most success with Guild Wars. This is in part due to the simpler interface 8 powers at a time. In town we can talk about what the mission will be like and what our focus should be on. He is really enjoying being able to help by 'aiming for the biggest bunch' as he puts it and AoEing with an Elementalist, while I basically control myself and 3 heroes.
Its one of those simple to learn tough to master games with all the synergies between powers and team builds.

Try lord of the rings, it's free for the most part.

First, congratulations with final exams being over for you! I am currently on my last week of seminars at university!
Now to the heart of the problem. If you are indeed only interested in playing a game for the course of the winter break (i.e. no long term commitment with a game) then Guild Wars may be the best bet, if only thanks to the B2P model they use for the product. I might also suggest any of Turbine's current offerings in DDO and LotRO, or EQ2:Extended since they are F2P right now and could be fun for the couple weeks to month that you and your partner will have off from school.
All of these games from my previouse experiences are quest driven, focus on PVE (although GW does have PVP available) and have grouping available for content! The best thing is the little to no investment required to get started with each game!
I hope this helps! Enjoy the holiday!

EQ2 E, Runes of magic, d&d online, and guild wars are all excellent games in their own right.

Guild Wars. Between the 3 campaigns and Eye of the North expansion there is plenty of pve content to last you for awhile. The only grind is pushing out Hall of Monument rewards for Guild Wars 2 but that ofcourse is clearly optional. if you try it and find you like it then find yourself a good guild and you are set. I been playing Guild Wars for about 5 years, its an awesome game.
I would definatly try Lord of the Rings first . It sounds to me thats its exactly what your looking for .
Guildwars is only PvP driven if you want it to be, you can play it for years and never do any PvP if you don't want to.
RoM might be worth a look, But my recommendations are either GW or DDO.
But GW is better for duoing, in DDO you either need some more friends or you have to PUG all the time, and the game isn't that great for PUGs. In GW you can fill out the party with 3 heroes each, and while they are slightly worse than actual players they are good enough for almost anything except the elite zones.
DDO is F2P, GW is B2P so you'll need to buy the boxes (Platinum is recommended) but it have a free trial. So take a weekend with one of the games (or a day) and one with the other before you decide. Only way to see which works best for you.
I would say Lord of the Rings too. My girlfriend goes hot and cold with MMOs but this was one she did really like for a long time. Playing together it had the right mix of stuff for me and "girly" stuff that she loved such as the appearance slots so you can fine tune your character's appearance and the housing, different horses, atmospheric locations, great festivals and events with fun quests etc. The classes are all very interesting too, not your standard healer, tank, mage stuff.
As said above it's free-to-play now too and not in the EQ2 Extended "limit the crap out of you until you pay" way, but it's very playable for the first 20 levels to get a taste for the game. I doubt either of you would be disappointed with it tbh.
I originally PvPed a LOT in Guild Wars because I had a good guild and we would get groups coordinated. Since I don't play regularly in the last few years, I've done almost only PvE content and despite having probably a 1000+ hours I don't think I've done it all.
Good suggestion by NeKrow too.

Thanks for all of your helpful posts! I think we will try Guild Wars, as I already have one key laying around and I think it is only 20ish for the original GW. I seem to remember that in GW you cannot be in the same instance as your group members for every zone? Is my memory accurate? Can we not always be walking around next to one another, on the same quest, helping one another out? I ask because she will only enjoy it if we can be "next" to each other on the screen at all times.
There are a few quests where you are solo, but not many. The thing that is different in this (and why Arenanet has sometimes not called it an MMO) is that when you leave a town or city, you go into an instance. IF you are not in a team together you will be separated. So, just make sure you are teamed up before you zone.
And note that towns have multiple 'districts' so when you log in, click o nthe drop down and go to the same district or the same town.

I also would highly suggest LoTRO... but I didn't because I don't believe it would run as smoothly as you like on your computers. But you know what, it IS worth downloading and trying just to see how well it runs. It is, in my humble opinion, the best free to play fantasy mmorpg available.
I meant to write in my first or second post, I have an Inspiron 1500something. Its just my work/travel computer, but it does run LoTRO and GW okay. GW it runs with almost full settings and LoTRO with medium.

There are a few solo missions, but I can only remember 2 of those. The rest can you do together as long as you team up in an outpost before doing them.
No problem for you whatsoever, those are just optional missions anyways. I remember doing one a lot of times to try to get a hero armor drop.
And the tutorial for Factions and Nightfall is about 3-5 minutes soloplay as well. Core have one you can do together.
