I[object Window]m not going to talk about my whole [object Window](ex) WoW story[object Window] so I[object Window]ll try to keep things short.
The reason I[object Window]ve started to give World of Warcraft Classic a shot had nothing to do with the game itself, more so with the incredible BS Soe showed against their loyal Everquest 1 players and we all know how well that turned out, don[object Window]t we?
->Everquest 2 the game came out unfinished, buggy plus they removed everything that Everquest 1 fans wanted to have (loved).. Then WoW was released so the following months all Soe did remodell the incredible easy game after the [object Window]WoW modell[object Window] I can tell you almost every patch dumbed down the easy EQ2 even more. At some point I said to myself [object Window]oh yeah great fuck you Soe[object Window] why I[object Window]m wasting my time playing a bad copy?! I can play the original and thats what I did.
I picked up WoW Classic during release but only made it to level 5 or 6 because I really didn[object Window]t like the questing handholding style. So when I decided to give it another shot I knew I had to deal with a lot of things I didn[object Window]t like, but compared to the BS Eq 2 had become it seemed like the better option for me.
Started to play again, learned to love the open world feeling and especially SOME of the GUI mods (you know before crap like TS, Recount and Omen hit the world), the customer support was very friendly and helpful so it was clear thats my [object Window]new home[object Window]. I always knew its a game for casuals which was fine for me back then.
After reaching lvl 60 I started some raiding (BC ready to release in 7 weeks or so) which has been nice but no way near the quality I knew from Everquest 1, so I decided its not worth my time and just worked on T0.5 then BC hit the world which brought lots of good but also bad stuff (removing PvP ranking, making green equal with T3, killing 40 men raids you name it...), anyway I gave it a shot and I really liked most aspects of the game and started to do some hardcore raiding again and loved the clear progression Karazhan -> Gruul -> Magtheridon -> KT -> SSC....
but then Blizzard removed the access quests AND introduced badge gear which was equal to ~ T5. Major let down and killing point for many many raidguilds I knew but Soe took over Vanguard this point so no way back, our guild got killed with this patch we just did the daily quest stuff while waiting for Wrath of the Lichking.
I really didn[object Window]t like what I[object Window]ve heard back at Blizzcon about making raids more accessible so yes I was VERY worried but I can tell you Wotlk surpassed my nightmares by a whole lot. I never knew that casual = lazy, 6year old easy mode. To be honest I think Blizzard is using [object Window]casual[object Window] as an excuse for their ongoing efforst to dumb the game down to the point of no return.
At the end of the day I[object Window]ve said to myself [object Window]this isn[object Window]t a game made for casuals its a game made for kiddies with the worst community I[object Window]ve ever seen screw it[object Window] and quit. I did follow some news about the game and even Catacylsm but from what I[object Window]ve been reading so far they[object Window]re continuing to dumb down the game so the only way for me giving it another shot would be [object Window]classic servers[object Window] otherwise no way.
Its sad because the game itself isn[object Window]t that bad its just the stubborness of Greg Street, Boby Kotick and Tom Chilton which killed this game for me oh and of course - hello ***** Kotick - the itemshop.
Summary:
Reason so many people went back to WoW is simple: other games aren[object Window]t different enough! Even the former great Aion is getting dumbed down with almost every patch which I hate like hell.
Did you try cataclysm yet?
HC mode is a lot harder than in BC/WotLK
Please do not hype any gam.. oh wait, nevermind... forgot what forum I was on.
Well i can´t help to get the feeling , that both naysayers and yessayer are the same.
Now here is my story , i pay the game and i still play after 6 years , the only break i took was in vanialla wow , of 6 months cause i was bored to death .
But well friends wanted me back to help them out .
Worst mistake in my life , Sorry as a gamer you need to learn when to stay and when to move on.
Dont believe me 20 min of sitting at a boss kill , will say enough the few people who invite you, versus the tons of kill stealing .
Those are the people you suppose to raid with , suppose to trust ?
Now this game is fun cause its simple , nothing wrong with simple and fun a proven formula .
But Isabeal you hit the hammer right on the nails head , when you said its item progress binding .
So endstory of short recap .
Not no hatter or lover can deny .
If you are not interested in greed and item progress , this game is not for you !
If you are willing to put up with those major flaw , then this game is fun for you .
Thats it we play MMO cause there is progress or possibility of progress .
This MMO offers it all in a terrific package , just minus the human factor .
It seems a few people are under the impression that the game has goten significanly easier. While they have lowered the barrier of entry and gearing up has become signifcanlty easier, the dungeons have become much less forgiving. Many of the heroic boss encounters will kill you instantly if you are not paying attention. Interupts and crowd control are nescessary to even get past the trash. I love the new dungons because it's easy to tell who screwed up and the challenge is very rewarding.
Also, there is a lot more interaction betten players because you can't just que up and run through the content without discussing strategy. I'm sure this will end one day and we'll be back to facerolling instances for daliy tokens, but I'm having a lot of fun right now.
Cataclysm needed to do someting special to keep players going for the long term. I can't see how it has done that and even the OP states she is on the fence about resubbing. I think that speaks volumes right there that people are just growing tired of WoW. We want Blizzards's new stuff, not keep on going back to the old stuff.
Tens of millions of people have subscribed to WoW over the past 6 years, and some people are talking about being tired of it? Really? I think the volumes you are hearing is your own negative opinion playing loudly over and over again in your head. When we see substantial percentages of people leaving WoW like Warhammer Online or Age of Conan, you'll have a point...otherwise, you are just a troll.
This is another expansion pack (link for SaintViktor since he doesn't seem to understand the concept - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_pack). Of course it isn't going to radically overhaul the game. It adds new content (2 new starter races - BTW, the Goblin starting area is rather fun, 80-85 content, new dungeons, new raids, and the typical additional raids over the next 18 months or so that Blizzard usually releases), changed the mechanics moderately (back to being close to BC days which is why I'm one of those that have returned), added new profession, new recipes, etc.
Is WoW now not WoW? No. Go back and click on the link above if you have any confusion on this matter.
Yeah me the troll, totally got me. If you and many can't accept the fact that alof of us on forums have a very different opinion than some then maybe forum posting is not for you.
I know Vik does not NEED my defense, but....I'm going to give it ANYWAY.
WoW players that love WoW? Well of course! It's why they're still playing it. However.....when you come to a PUBLIC forum (i.e., this is not the WoW forums over on Blizzard's site).....you give up your entitlement to always have everyone agree with you that WoW is 50 flavors of awesomesauce. This is a PUBLIC forum. It is not run by Blizzard and people here MAY agree with you, but they are equally apt to DISAGREE with you. That is the risk you take when you choose to post on PUBLIC forums that are not owned and operated by the developers of your game of choice.
Now....on topic:
Cataclysm and Me = Mixed Bag
I still do not feel compelled to play MOST of the time even WITH "all the myriads" of "new things" Blizzard has added. Some of us are just TIRING of more of the same ol' same ol' with different backgrounds. Sure some of the new zones are lovely, particularly Vashi'jr. BUT....once you get through the pretty new lvl 80-85 areas and once your goblin or worgen turns 20....it's pretty much back to the same ol' same ol', like I said.
You still have to level through Outlands.....AGAIN.....for the umpteenth time, etc. I don't think I have it in me to DO that.
Is it Blizzard's fault that people suffer burn out? You know.....yes and no. But the "fault" matters less to me than the result. If I'm sitting around in a game that just this week released an expansion and I'm bored to near death.......there's a problem. What I have to do is decide if I'm willing to keep paying a monthly fee for a game that bores me to death.
I think that decision should be pretty easy to make before too awfully long here.
more like copied from DaoC than EQ2, sorry repost .. didnt copy quote

Well, I don't think it is a matter of not accepting your opinion, but rather your premise.
I don't think that 'cataclysm needed to ....keep players going for the long term'. I don't think the evidence of 12 million subs points to Blizzard having a poor retention rate. Whatever Blizzard is doing, IS keeping players going for the long term.
I do accept however that Cataclysm may not have done something special to keep YOU going long term....and that's a different ball of wax completely.
It is not a matter of differing opinions, it is the overgeneralization of your statement that makes it false...... evidence does not indicate that people are growing tired of WoW, although evidence may show that those who haven't been attracted to WoW or those who DID grow tired of WoW will not find anything in Cataclysm to change their mind.
People are happier with WoW than ever in general terms, but more specifically, those who don't like or are tired of WoW haven't changed their minds.

If WoW has added little or a lot is not an opinion.
Is removing the entire old 1-60 content and replacing it with different 1-60 content adding something? they changed it, that's all.
I'm also a returning player and played since beta, and Cataclysm is overhyped in my opinion, there's something wrong when the majority of work done on expansion is aimed at new players and it's obvious that Blizzard are aware of people getting burned out.
I'm not bashing Blizzard for their decision, getting new players in is a wise decision business wise, but it's a shame for people who've been there since Vanilla, heck I remember killing Ragnaros nefarian and onyxia thousand of times, but they're back? I've run deadmines too many times to remember, and now I get to do it at level 85 aswell? yay? even some of the drops are weapons from vanilla with a twist.
it's not expanding, it's recycling, heck I remember the first time I went into Nef's room, and it was awesome and everyone were "look it's nef! woohoo" like, but how am i supposed to feel when I see him and Onyxia again? it'll be more like "them again.....zzZz" but new players wont feel that way.
WoW is by far the most succesfull mmo ever made, but it's getting old, and the dev team seems to be lacking new ideas, so instead they redo the old ones.
The Vasjh'ir zone is probably the best thing to come out of this expansion, but the majority of the quests are still, kill x amount of this mob, collect x amount of theese items from this mob etc etc.
Except for different quests and added zones, what is truly new on Cataclysm? other games have made expansions that added another playstyle without changing the old one, Blizzard has yet to accomplish that.
Imo WoW is far from the best mmo outthere, it's fun and easy to play, but it lacks depth and content outside of doing quests and killing stuff.
This is my opinion, you might love wow more than anything else, which is great and all power to you, but denying that the game is getting old for some people is not up for debate, that's just how it is, one day you'll get sick of it too.

This promotion was for a limited time ended Nov 30. I guess enough people are willing to pay the full prices still.
