Well they did scrap the AA idea so really the endgame hasn't changed one bit. While he was being a bit trollish he is absolutely correct in how it will be.

I'm not realy suprised at the numbers in relation to the ppl. that actually logged in this weekend considering the massive update ppl. had to download for Cata. !

Do not mistake Indifference for Hate. Nor Kindness for Weakness. for this is the Bane of Judgment !

I think it is few subscribers of any MMO that don't get the new expansion so it is really not a surprise to me.

    Impressive no less.

Indeed but  I was wondering if these numbers were including digital downloads . Loads of people I know in game decided to do that rather than actually wait to get one at a store . That could easily account for this increase .

Believe it or not some people actually enjoy content in WoW. Personally i'm looking forward to rated bgs, as I don't really have much time to raid on a consistent basis. Although i'm sure i'll venture into the 10 man content. Regardless mmo's bread and butter is grinding, its far from just being a WoW thing.

"Blizzard's juggernaut, World of Warcraft, has been declared the 'fastest selling video game on the planet' and devs have the numbers to back up the assertion. Over 3.3 million copies of the Cataclysm expansion sold in only twenty-four hours. These numbers eclipse the former title holder, Wrath of the Lich King, by more than a half-million copies."

Well first off I know this is a MMO site so most people here like to think that without MMOs ♠gaming would be in a world of hurt. But I really think the writers here should do a little reasearch before you make a claim that it is the fastest selling game on the planet. If you would of said fastest selling MMO on the planet that would of been correct. But saying it is the fastest selling video game on the planet is a out right lie. In 5 secounds just doing a search on google would show that Modern Warfare: Black Ops beat Cataclysm day one sales by 2.3 million copies. So please do some reasearch before you make statements like this, please for the love of all that is good! :) Here is links if you can not do the reasearch for yourself. Link1 Link2 Link3

    LOL, Slap, point made. :)

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was one of those millions.  It's a lot of fun :)

Not sure how long I will stay in WOW this time, but it's an enjoyable time killer.  Also splitting my time up between AOC and STO.  Lego Universe was fun for a bit but only for the first month.

Oh wow, more blizzard bull to make people believe they have more subs then they actually do.

"Fastest selling game on the planet" Err what lol? Im guessing they've never heard of GTA IV, Halo 3, Halo:ODST or any of the Call of Duty games. There's a couple more games that have smashed that 'record', but i guess ignorance is a bliss in WoW, after all if '12Million' believe it, it then becomes an 'irrefutable' fact.

War does not determine who is right, but who is left.

They announced that they increased the server capacities "considerably" for Cataclysm, which pretty much eliminated queues (because it's an expansion it's not about a new player influx).

Anyway, I was one of those those millions.

To the dudes who can't ... read.

Blizzard said it is the best selling PC game ever.

Those other best selling games are published on MULTI PLATFORMS.

So out of your Blac OPS copies around 8% are on PC's.

Which simply means Cata outsold the best selling PC games with a wide marging in those 24 hours.

Here is to the consoles . Lucky we got Blizzard to publish ONLY for PC/MAC. (remeber SC2).

With the time it takes for people to reach the 78+ level content, the numbers will continue to rise as folks finally get to the point where they can actually use the expansion if they are new to the game. I am sure there will be a lot of folks new to the game since the $20 for WoW and first 2 expansions was announced. Christmas will see another ton of new players. It's just a green future for WoW.

For one more time let your madness run with mine.

So with selling 3.3mil copy can only mean that there are are 4mil real WoW players not 11mil ?

  • SteamRangerSteamRanger Member UncommonPosts: 920

A little perspective might be in order. Yes, 3.3 million is a lot of sales. However, I'm willing to bet that this encompasses all of the pre-orders and the direct downloads which would all go on the ledger the same day, despite the fact that orders for this expansion have been placed over months.

Blizzard will spin this to perpetuate the folklore that they are the greatest thing on the planet. Just marketing, no real surprises.

I don't think anyone knows 100% yet about China but still, China has to make up atleast 9 million or atleast close to 9 mill copies sold in order for their so called 12 mill subs to hold water. Atleast that is what i would think. This is the only info I found so far about the global release.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was simultaneously released in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand on December 7, and became available in Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on December 9. Hong Kong is the capital of China so yes I woudl think so.

LOL, the actual number claimed was 13.5 million I believe.  I would have to ask is China allowing Cata?  I seem to remember them being behind in expansions.  Either way, 3.3 in 24 hours means that 10 mil accounts didn't upgrade in that period.  It could be because of the Holiday's, people have other stuff to buy first, people on vacation, or just people waiting for the mad rush to end before buying their copy.  There could be a million reasons why millions haven't bought a copy yet.  Just give it time.  Besides the fanbois are going to get ya for posting something that might be construde as negative.

Um. I don't know about Europe, but in NA I don't remember seeing that many LOCKED/FULL/HIGH populated servers for a while. We'll see where it's at or how the player retention looks like after the holidays but right now it seems all is well.

Another note, it seems the servers did get a good upgrade. Now some servers are sitting at over 40,000 characters over level 10 seen in the last 30 days. About 60 of the 240 NA servers have seen more than 20,000 online characters.

Final note that I understand we're talking about characters, and a lot of players do have alts that have been included. I also understand those numbers come from Warcraft Census, and it is not perfect. But It is nonetheless impressive.

Side note: Most of the low population servers are 'PVP'.

You really should take your own advice here; this article did not say anything about best selling PC game ever. In fact it said it was the best selling game ever and then they changed it to the best selling MMO. See one is false the other one is true, that is why we responded the way we did. So maybe you should read the article we are responding to and not just make generic statements about people learning to read.

Plus if it was me I would stick with best selling MMO not PC, the PC market is a small percentage of the money that gaming makes as a whole. So best selling MMO just has a nicer ring to it, then out of a fading PC market the World of Warcraft MMO makes the most money :).

They increased the player caps (and upgraded server hardware i assume) for the launch... still EVERY server in the russian region had 1k+ queues for the few evenings following launch day.  We also already got 1 new server 2 days after launch (with free transfers to it), and i guess there's another one coming soon for the other battlegroup, as most servers are still having 500-700 queues every evening.

Considering the massive PITA that getting any game on launch day is around here, the digital download purchace option was definetly welcome, i hope other publishers will make such options as well. I would guess that it is also much more profitable for blizzard as they don't have to share a cut with the retailers, and bandwidth is cheaper than printing discs and making boxes too.

Cataclysm didn't release in China. They only recently got Wrath so it would be too early. Hong Kong is independent.
