This giveaway was actually the easiest of all Rift giveaways to grab a key. For those that didn't read through the comments of Mike's announcement that the giveaway would be today, someone commented that using Twitter would be a good way to say when they keys were going to be available. Mike said he agreed. A little later, a tweet appeared on the MMORPG account that they would be up "very soon". Sure enough, a few minutes later, the keys were available.
What seems to be the salt on the wound is they said "In all fairness others who got a key from last give-away will not get another" whats stopping them from making another account?
This was handled poorly, i understand they want people to get a beta key, but throwing them up in the air and yelling "GO GET 'EM" is not a way for a contest. In the past they held stuff like this, but you had to come in each day, click on a button and wait, thats a giveaway contest. This "who gets it gets it" may seem right, but its unfair to lots of people who can't compete with people who can make a bazillion accounts, all on different computers just so they can have 6 characters from one person.
I've been registered at the site, hoping to get a beta access key for a month or so. These key giveaways that last 5 minutes are a great way to find people that don't actually have things to do during the day, so it's probably a smart plan for them. But to me it's just like rubbing salt into a wound.
Oh well, I think I'd rather try TERA out anyhow.

The complaints in these forums often reflects what i think is very much like the playerbase of WoW. As pathetic and childish as it can get.
But hey, its good for a laugh!
Its human nature, they missed something they desire and they show their sorrow, they are many ways to show your pain. If some way seams that pathetic to you, just remember its a way to show their pain, thats what is important if humanism mean anything to you.
I got insanely lucky... I wasn't even trying, had never heard of Rift... I saw a post on the home page of mmorpg.com that said something about beta, sent one email and got a VIP beta key lol... I am glad I did, the game is awesome!
I agree, they just spammed the comments with "KEY PLZ!" Has mmorpg.com ever held beta key via comment posts? As i've always seen it as a link to click to get the code.

Profiles where tagged and a link was provided later so the first 100 posters could grab their key.

Well my opinion is MikeB did what he said he was going to do, however, it was definately a mysterious way.
No I did not get a VIP key, I was one of the top 100 Commenters though, reason is because the forum temporarily got overloaded and kept giving me error messages. So when it finally unlocked, instead of reading the original post, I went right to commenting, like the past contest have been. As far as posting before they did the contest, it was on twitter, I just now started following mmorpg on twitter, as I am very new to twitter world. So MikeB did do what he said he would do.
So I dont feel to upset at the whole contest, moreso I am pissed about the discussion section crashing then I am at the contest.
However MikeB, I still consider myself a winner, as I was in the top 100. Even if my only reward is self satisfaction.

The notice was given over three hours before the giveaway was done. Not sure where you got the 10 minutes from.
Yeah you gave notice to sit and hit F5 for an indefinite period of time. You in no way said when it would happen. Your handling of the entire thing from the first giveaway to the change in format on this one has been flawed and poorly handled.
We tried giving a specific time as an experiment in the previous series of giveaways and it only resulted in such a massive amount of camping that the site briefly crashed. Giving you a heads up that it was happening today was a fair compromise. After all, we could have just posted it up randomly, and then you'd have really missed your chance!
LOL, I see MMORPG.com is still doing it the dumb way. Do a fn draw already. You have 3 days of time you could have done it. Extra ticket per day, but hey that would be the right way.

The problem with event keys for any game is that you have to download the whole game and all for like 2 days of potential playtime. When you dont even have time to figure out your character etc, it becomes very difficult to fulfill your job as a beta tester by actually trying to test and break the game. Personally, I think that except for the stress test events, if you are not providing useful feedback and finding bugs then you should make way for someone who is.
All too often recent beta tests have been previews only where people just play.
As for single event kind of things -- They could always limit the thing by limiting you to a single zone of the game -- or limiting you to crafting or whatever. This would significantly reduce the number of assets that you have to download to participate -- plus it would keep a better handle on the people who are participating in said limited test.
If there's this much bitching about not getting a limited beta key imagine how much there will be when everyone gets into open beta/release and finds out the game doesn't live up to its massive hype (hint: no game does).
they shouldn't have given 100 keys away here. thats 100 users guaranteed not to give beta feedback. all that will happen is like always 100 people will come back here and troll the game, no matter how good it is.

What’s with always giving them out between 6am and 9am, some of us work shifts you know, every time i look i miss out by hours, i guess this beta is for 9 to 5 workers only? - (cause there the only ones who are awake between 6am and 9am.)
Maybe some keys can be given out in the afternoon or evening, instead of early morning, so we all have a fair chance of getting a key, just a thought.
NOTE: To all 9 to 5 workers, who live in Adelaide South Australia and catch the bus home after 5pm, BEWARNED! Talking about how great your Rift VIP key is while sitting or standing near the bus driver, may result in you being kicked off of the bus, you have been WARNED!

You can go to ten ton hammer and get a beta key, it isnt a vip key but it will allow you in an upcoming event though it doesnt specify which one.
