Imagine if WoW was on other platforms like Xbox360, Wii and playstation3.....Sales would be huuuuuuuge.
There is no way you can make it playable on consoles. Maybe dumbing it down I guess. Imagine a player in the middle of the raid fight with a controller.
Oh well another "lets just praise ourselves again" Blizzard article. former DL + launch day events but obviously couldn't care less it doesn't change my life or help me at all even if they are selling 300 million in 24 why do people these days care so much about numbers? The only one really getting favored over this is Bobby **** Kotick.
The only important factor is behind the PC if you like the game = buy if not = pass no stupid PR numbers are going to change that.

$100 Million in one day. Cha-ching! Nice work Blizzard.
Impressive, but when compaired for example to the film industry, where movies such as Hairy Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and the new Chronicles of Narnia films are making quite a few million more than that on a daily basis, and Blizzard's victory seems a little less interesting.

And why are we comparing two different mediums of entertainments here? oh right you had to put down WOW in whatever way possible.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Cataclysm didn't release in China. They only recently got Wrath so it would be too early. Hong Kong is independent.
Had no idea it was an independant but still, they need to come up with atleast 9 million more sales somwhere, not gonna happen.
Though China is still their sovereign. I think they get to remain autonomous for a certain amount of time after china resumed sovereignity. Hong Kong was under the British in the mid 1800's.

That statement made me curious. I tried to find some numbers but I cannot come up with some good base for a comparison.
The numbers I've gathered from the Movie industry are 74 million USD for Twilight Saga: New Moon (I've lost all faith in humanity) for its first day in US & Canada. World of Warcraft : Cataclysm has sold 3.3 million copies in its first 24 hours but it doesn't tell where or how much sales it represents in USD.
Now if we compare gross revenue, Twilight got around 710 million USD. Though on overall revenues, Avatar brought much, MUCH more revenue with 2,779 million USD. Avatar cost 237 million USD to produce.
It gets harder to estimate the gross revenue from World of Warcraft. Blizzard reports a gross revenue of around 750 million euros for a normal quarter, so about 1,000 million USD per 3 months, or 4 billion USD per year without expansion packs or cash shop releases. It's initial cost is estimated between 70 and 150 million USD, which of course excludes investments on each expansion packs or maintenance costs.

Well, a crappy game is a crappy game, so why not?
[mod edit] some of us are, in fact, NOT ready to bow down at the altar in the church of WoW, but some of us expect more from an MMO than PvP and cartoony toons in ridiculous-looking Tier 6 raid gear. I've been referring to WoW as Dungeons & Disney for a while, and the character design certainly deems it appropriate. It's crappy-looking, really heavy on grind, and the level cap is discouraging to players like myself: married parents who work full-time and don't have the time to devote to slogging around for 12 hours in front of a computer every night.
1 - they offered digital download right away. .wonder if they counted pre-orders?
2 - people will buy the expac in anticipation of going back to the game in a moment of weakness
Really? that is the best you can come up with? The reason it sold 3.3 million copies on the first day is because people who don't play it, bought the xpansion (within 24 hours of it being available) so that they have it in case they decide to start playing again in the future.
It is getting really hard to be a Blizzard-hater, isn't it?
And I'm not in that list. I didn't buy Cata until Thursday.
Cataclysm didn't release in China. They only recently got Wrath so it would be too early. Hong Kong is independent.

I'm not sure about your reading skills.. but you do realize this is the first 24 hours, and doesn't even include all parts of the world.
There are probably 6M subscribers in the west, and 7M in the east. Basically about half of all people who are subscribed were excited to buy the game in the first 24 hours. Others, like myself, might have picked it up a few days later, and others might not buy it for months.
The best you can do is laugh because WOW didn't sell the expansion to 100% of it's subscribers in the first 24 hours?

This post is priceless. You have to just love the people that think the sun rises and sets on their ass. He thinks the graphics are bad, so it must be true. He thinks the game is crappy so it must be true. You can keep trying to pass off your opinion as fact, but here in the real world. Your opinion amounts well sad to break this to you, but it amounts to nothing. I really did enjoy your other post to. So because 3.3 million people enjoy a game you think is bad, they are idiots? Why don't you come down off that high horse of yours. Reality is calling.

Actually it was under British control until 1997. Its only been the past 13 years that its been part of Chinese sovereignty. It does however hold an independant judiciary. Although it is part of a single country, ie. China. I believe their WoW players fall under the Chinese licence.

"Blizzard's juggernaut, World of Warcraft, has been declared the 'fastest selling video game on the planet' and devs have the numbers to back up the assertion. Over 3.3 million copies of the Cataclysm expansion sold in only twenty-four hours. These numbers eclipse the former title holder, Wrath of the Lich King, by more than a half-million copies."
Well first off I know this is a MMO site so most people here like to think that without MMOs ♠gaming would be in a world of hurt. But I really think the writers here should do a little reasearch before you make a claim that it is the fastest selling game on the planet. If you would of said fastest selling MMO on the planet that would of been correct. But saying it is the fastest selling video game on the planet is a out right lie. In 5 secounds just doing a search on google would show that Modern Warfare: Black Ops beat Cataclysm day one sales by 2.3 million copies. So please do some reasearch before you make statements like this, please for the love of all that is good! Here is links if you can not do the reasearch for yourself. Link1Link2Link3
Sorry, I misplaced my mouse pointer...anyway, I thought it said the fastest selling MMO not the fastest selling game.

It wouldn't surprise me this game does have a large player base and people love it so yes they will sell a lot of the first day but honestly Compared to other game's( Including all game's not just mmorpg's) this isn't a very big number.

Only because they sold thier souls. WoW isn't that much better than pretty much any other AAA MMO that has ever released in the last 5 years or so.
