I'm really skeptical how it can be released in just 3 months. It takes time to start advertising to get the word out just to start having people apply for closed beta, then they have to adjust to however that test goes, then open beta, then adjust, then release. It's just so hard to believe all that can be achived in 3 months...
1.5-2 years development time for PS:N is probably not a bad number, they essentialy will need to add no content to the game like PS, if they're taking that road.
2. The Agency and DC Universe proves their shift to consoles.
3. Rushed without hardly a mention, can't warrant any hype or advertising then.
4. John Smedley says this:
As for why it's called Planetside Next, it appears that Smedley might have learned something from his signature franchise. "We don't have the official name for it.Planetside Next is kind of the working title," Smedley said. "We've learned some lessons with Everquest II , not one of the better moves that we've ever made. We should have called itEverQuest Something. Having Everquest I and II sit on the shelves at the same time, in hindsight, was probably not the the brightest of moves."
....
To me that means EQ2 wasn't the game Everquest players wanted, so they should have called it Everquest "Next" or whatever to imply it's a totally different beast and it appeals to different people. Well they've called Planetside 2, Planetside Next because it'll be totally different and not what Planetside lovers want.
I reckon it'll be some dumbed down instanced up console FPS where the max players is like 24 in one area. It could be something like MAG where they say 256 players, in reality it's a much smaller number but you fight for the same objective.
Whatever happens I bet it isn't that massive thousand players on one island with vehicles and being totally open that us Planetside players wanted.
Negatory. Smed has said he wants something MASSIVE, not like other fps games out there. The game isn't being rushed, it's been in development for over a year now (and they already have most of the initial leg work done--engine, tools, design doc, etc.). It will have tons of vehicles.
For an added fee, of course.
I have a feeling that the reason they are calling this sequal "Planetside Next" is because they plan on itemizing everything in the cash shop, so you are always charging your credit card for the next thing you'll need not to get pwned.
I'm sure the box will get us a man in his undies...maybe a pistol (if they are generous).
Everything else will be value-added.
You want a rifle? $1 for a 1 week rental.
You want a set of special operations cammo? $1 for a 1 week rental.
You want a jeep with the gatling gun on there...oh boy, that's $5...and you can use it for 48 hours at the time of purchase.
And the tank? The thing that pwns all? Just pay $15 and you can use it for your entire 8 hour playsession!
...Until the next thing comes along, which will be $17.95.
I know how this game is gonna work, knowing Smed, for I have seen Freerealms: the place where nothing fun is ever free. Heck, I think the game will be fun if you have about $50 of disposable income every month. It'll even be fun if you only buy the box. So fun, in fact, that you'll have every incentive to throw more money at it.

Yea its likly that could happen, micro transaction were something fought hard against by CSR's in the current Planetside, so its possible they could have it in the second. Thinks its worked rather well in free realms and games like battlefield heros.
I would love a F2P Planetside 2 with microtransactions. Just do it exactly like League of Legends: everything is a lateral playstyle unlock, everything can be very slowly grinded out free of charge, but you can pay to unlock it instantly (but doing so doesn't give you a gameplay advantage because -- like I said -- they're all lateral unlocks.)
Honestly if they don't implement it like that they'll miss out on a huge opportunity, tbh. Subscription means less players. Harsh microtransactions means less players. That's probably the biggest risk: that SOE designs the pricing poorly. EQ2x was a pretty shaky design imo.

100% Agree.
League of legends has the perfect transaction system, and I could see this working well with the planetside Battle Rank (BR) system. You can play for a while to unlock certifications, or just buy them. It doesnt become pay2win, but gives you a more diverse character / account more quickly.
I believe that SOE made some bad decisions (caves, BFRs) which hurt the first game, but I am still very glad to hear that a sequal is coming out. Even to this day I can remember various battles that took place in the 2003 prime, and no other game has come close to offering the same sort of mass pvp experience.
I think there are a lot of gamers are sick of boring, hotbar, faceroll combat. Anything resembling planetside would be a amazing.
SOE just announced that The Agency is delayed until late 2011.
The problem with EQ2 was not the name. Suggesting that the name of the game was the problem implies that players were really at fault for expecting something else. It could have been called EQ Whatever and little to nothing would have changed.
Perhaps I have my times mixed up, but didn't soe just ask players this year what they would want in planetside 2? That doesn't leave a lot of time to actually make a game if they plan on releasing next march.
What SOE and Darth Smedly are best at they come up with some wonderous ways of switching failiure onto paying players or others.
It was our fault SWG bombed because supposedly we didn't like reading, Intel and AMD are at fault for EQ2's crap graphical performance for making multi core CPU's and not 10ghz single core ones, it was McQuaid's fault VG bombed um no that was pushing it out the door before it was ready a decision soleley taken by SOE.

This is purely random conjecture.
Do you even realize that they are coming out with a new everquest 3? It's called, Everquest NEXT right now. If $OE aknowledges that EQ2 was not what players wanted, and then they make a 3rd title, and call it next. I think that is supposed to be a hint, that they are trying to do it right? I don't know, it just seems like the THIRD title would attempt to be better than the 2nd if it was a almost unanymous failure?
You are basing Planetside '2', as 'NEXT', as if it were an Everquest 2 release. Which is not the case at all. I wouldn't base assumptions after forcing yourself to completely change the terminology of the term NEXT so that it isn't even the same meaning.
Though they will probably be catering to something on the opposite side of what the oringal fans loved. Smaller, streamline, questy, linear, and possibly instanced. This is all $OE knows how to do anymore. But I'd love for them to surprise me and make me eat my own words.
or is SOE just running out of ideas for good names to sequals...
NEXT is just a placeholder. And no, planetside 2 has been hinted to be in the works since around early 2010, maybe late 09? Not in official statements, but still statements by smedley himself making mention of 'New planetside', and planetside NEXT. Saying that the fans would love the news.

Totally, I still feel terribly guilty for failing to play my Jedi the way $o€ wanted it to be played so hardly that they have needed to 2 combat revamps to get rid of my wrongful interpretation of their game.
Honnestly guys, why are we still holding debates on all $o€'s mistakes? As soon as you see their name on a mmo, don't buy it, you won't be disappointed for the 44th time. They were good when the genre was emerging, but how many great mmos have they produced since competition invaded the industry?

That's nice, but honestly we haven't seen anything at all about this game...
So they better start campaigning bigtime for it...
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

Just happy to play video games, and equally happy to play a new MMOfps.
Yay planetside to, what an awesome groundbreaking pc experience I had with the first one.

The things most of you seem to expect/desire will come around in the next 50 years just be patient please
You guys have now crushed all my expectations of Planetside next, thanks alot.
